To hear the stories of hip-hop’s recent Soundscan troubles, you’d think that the entire record industry is in some sort of funk, but that’s not really the case. While it’s true they aren’t selling as many CDs as they used to, the record industry is making more money than ever once you factor in digital downloads.
The Dixie Chicks are moving major units (nullus), and they can’t even get their shit played on the radio. Rap, meanwhile, has its own station, and it still can’t sell shit. Obviously the main issue is that the music sucks balls, but I wonder how that came to be the case. Could it be that rap has a nasty drug problem?
Substance abuse, to be sure, has been an integral part of hip-hop ever since the beginning. Indeed it can be argued that gettin’ fucked up is a more key element to hip-hop culture than graffiti art, or as I like to call it, vandalism. Still, substance abuse in hip-hop goes beyond your typical joint and a tall boy of malt liquor, which I consider almost healthy.
I should’ve known something was up a few years ago when Irv Gotti got caught walking around with exctasy pills and Viagra. Why would a guy who’s only like 30 need to take a pill to get his joint hard? Lord knows I have a hard enough time keeping my shit not hard. With the magic that is today’s technology, it’s a wonder I get any work done.
Another rapper, whose name management doesn’t like me to mention, had an incident in a shopping mall with a fur coat (in the middle of the summer), some PCP, and an AK-47. Said rapper claims he was being assaulted by a large group of people, but it’s worth noting that security footage of this incident has yet to be released to the media.
Fatlip from the Pharcyde, at the height of his cocaine addiction, once accidentally sucked a guy’s dick, as revealed in the hilarious Spike Jonze documentary “What’s Up, Fatlip?” Granted, I’ve never heard of a little cocaine making a guy suck another guy’s dick on accident, but the fact remains: Drug abuse is no laughing matter.
A few other rappers I’m concerned about (feel free to add on in the comments):
DMX (again, peep the new SMACK DVD)
Snoop Dogg (supposedly, he spends $1,000 a day on weed)
BG (people don’t move to Detroit for the weather)
Dallas Austin (smuggling coke into Dubai?)
It’s notable that most of these people haven’t had hits in quite some time. You have to wonder if hip-hop would be in the state that it’s in, both artistically and commercially, if so many rappers weren’t so fucked up on drugs.

First(probably)
1- X & Snoop have made good music in the past and they were probably still on drugs.
2- BG doesn’t count.
3- D. Austin produced songs for ABC & Boyz II Men, so he gets a pass.
You know who is definitely on drugs? The Long T-Shirted Ghetto Spawn & their Future Baby Mama’s who actually support the shitty “trap’n'crack” rap that’s out there.
You know who else is definitely on drugs? The T.I.s that cosign all those shitty “trap’n'crack” rappers.
Hopefully, Dre will drop “Detox” and it will do just that to this plague of awful music that’s turning Hip-Hop into Pookie from “New Jack City”.
PS- PIMP C! PIMP C! PIMP C! There ya go, Bol.

True True, a ton of people be on that green but some of these dudes is takin it too far. I think a lot of these cats get swept up in that shit (ex, H, cocaine, etc… the hard sh!t)because they were never exposed to it growing up on a recreational level. (not coc though) At least they weren’t using back when they was broke. (E, Heroine, etc. )(minus B.G.)
Then they get dough, start hanging with rich white cats who been poppin E, doing H and cocaine since they was like 12 and get caught up in it.
You know how it is in the industry….if upscale white folks are doing it, (Crystal, X, designer clothes, etc.)then cats start talkin bout it and using it as status symbols to peeps in the hood.
I remember thinking when the whole Ex thing got big in Hip Hop that “damn these cats are late as hell”. White boys been on that sh!t for ages now and niccas is just now screaming it on records like they invented the sh!t.
Now I ain’t knocking niccas cause to each his own, but niccas were better off rapping about 40’s and blunts and the local house party.

Drugs have always been part of the entertaiment and show business. Not just that, American society too. So it’s no suprise that a lot of these rappers have drug issues. It doesn’t and didn’t just start with this generation. A lot of the old schoolers and pioneers had drug issues as well. Melle Mell is one example. He didn’t make “White Lines” for nothing.
He even stated in an interview last year, that coke was a problem for him. It’s not just Hip Hop. If you look back at a lot of the artist and soul music from the 60’s and 70’s, a lot of their music was about drugs. A lot of those artist had drug addictions as well.
I don’t nkow if you guys saw this (or many) of the documerntaries on drugs and Amican society/entertainment, but they are worth checking out. There is one called “The Drug Years.” It’s a 4 part series, that talks about the counter culture of drugs, Amercian society on drugs, and the many enertainers over the years that had issues due to drugs.

Hip hop isn’t moving units like it used to because the holy trinity of “Em, Pimp Juice, and us (Jay-Z)” isn’t really around anymore. Em’s taking care of all his personal issues, Nelly’s acting, and Hov is “retired”.
Sales-wise, some guys are trying to fill the void (and doing a damn good job of it), like 50 Cent, Kanye, and T.I. Its not because hip hop has some type of issues, its just that there haven’t been any notable releases. When an anticipated hip hop album like “King” drops, it’ll still go gold in its first week.
Any talks of a hip hop slump on the Soundscan will be corrected when Outkast drops this fall. Quote me on that.
P.S. Do you ever think that maybe “Detox” keeps getting delayed because it isn’t that good? Just a thought…

ProjectNRM–I forgot about Outkast. Thank Christ for Messrs. 3000 & Boi.
Also, If Dre is gonna drop “Detox”, it better be soon. 50 is just about done, Em is probably a year away from finishing whatever album he’ll do, and Game is in real danger of joining Chingy in the sophomore slump category. I like dude (blah-nullus), but him and 50 might have *ahem* “Ethered” eachother’s career. So yeah, If Dre wants to continue having Aftermath be a multiplatinum factory, he’s gotta drop soon.
More specifically in regards to your question: I think that Dre keeps giving the good beats to the shitty people on Aftermath and has to start from scratch each time. Either that or he’s waiting to see who he should have on that. Cosigner or not, Dre knows that his current Aftermath roster isn’t anywhere near the teams that helped put out “The Chronic” and “Chronic 2001.”
Last point: Other thing is, Em is sorting his life out and 50 & Game don’t get along.. Maybe Dre’s trying to see who the public will support to see who gets the bulk of the work.

why you think rap artists only out there to make catchy singles instead of full-albums??? you also have to put all those ringtones to consideration. alot of popular tunes you hear on the radio are making platinum or multi-platinum just off the ringtone business ALONE…
when you have the fugees going platinum for thier single that you DON’T hear on the radio, that DON’T have a video out, and especially no definate DATE whutsoever of an album coming out, then rap is doing fine…all they did was adjust with the times…
fuck a cd when you have your IPOD! it’s just the evolution of the music business. today’s 106 n park listeners don’t care how the album is like, they only care about that single that’s currently popular….

>Snoop Dogg (supposedly, he spends $1,000 a day on weed)>
here’s my question: weed makes you hungry, yet snoop still can’t fill a wifebeater, and he buys enough weed to finance a 3rd world country. methinks he’s chasing the laffy taffy with whatever fell off the trucks at BG’s house.

Yeah that was supposed to just be sales-wise. I’d slap anyone who had Nelly in their top five dead-or-alive.
And just to further illustrate the point I was trying to make earlier, three of the Billboard’s top 10 last week were hip hop albums. They were Busta Rhymes, Field Mob, and Gnarls Barkley (don’t hate, that IS a hip hop album).
Also, the number one album last week was “Loose” by Nelly Furtado. The lead single “Promiscuous” is getting play on hip hop radio and music video channels, and the entire album was produced by Timbaland.

true, but there was a time when the top 6 or so albums on billboard were hip-hop albums. [un?]fortunately, field mob won’t even go gold, busta rhymes is seeing his stock shrink by the minute & gnarls barkley is NOT a hip-hop album, it just features hip-hop [if you can call cee-lo & danger mouse that] artists performing a mish-mash of r&b, pop and shuckin-’n-jivin’ music.

if you never caught ms. furtado’s 1st albums, you wouldn’t know that she’s about as un-hip hop as hootie & the blowfish. just because she’s working with a hip-hop producer and “raps” on her single doesn’t mean she’s hip hop. that’s like sayin justin timberlake is hip-hop since he got his wacko jacko on with pharrell, or sayin christina aguilera is hip-hop because she’s working with dj premier.

Frankly I’m concerned with the growing problem in the most vocally known part of the rap industry right now, which is the hustla or “crack” music department, being interlaced and infatuated with the drug product. Where did we go wrong as a society? I ask myself as young, 17-year-old African-American male: Why do we allow artists such as Young Jeezy, Rick Ross, Juelz, and 50 to infiltrate our community? I find their music more disturbing than what’s left between Lil’ Kim’s legs (all them niggas that have been up in there, yeesh!). But on a serious note, when I hear children say 5 or 6 years old repeating lyrics such as: “Let me show you how to make that crack/how to spend that money/how to make it back.” I find it almost nauseating. I especially find it painful to hear these “cracked-downed” lyrics spoken freely over the air-waves and TV. sets in my home and the economically-challenged homes of America, particularly in the projects. Something’s gotta give, and if we continue to profit off of our fellow brother; we will continue to kill ourselves and each other…Raze Up.

Jay-Z also didn’t smoke weed on his rise to the top, and Kanye West said he didn’t barely smoke weed most of his life, either…
the rappers who DO do drugs are often not as successful, or haven’t fulfilled their potential… check Redman and Nas :(

Nor is it his poor research (re Fatlip). The fucked up thing about the article is that Byron equates quality hip-hop with record sales. Byron, Spice Girls, Vanilla Ice, David Hasselhoff (esp outside the US), Ms Spears, etc. You sound like some fucking-fed-on-industry-dick idiot. i agree with some of what everyone has said, with that i think drugs affects all of the music industry because the life of an artist is fast paced and sometimes the artists need motivation(coke) or inspiration(weed)to do a concert or to do a song. you really cant blame them because i think if we all were in a position where we had cameras and lights in our face 24 hrs a day or the pressure of dropping a hot album or just keeping up with the new cats in the game, we would use somethin just to make it tolerable.
but i do hate people who just because they listen to these albums think that they actually know the artists. If you have ever listened to a 50 cent mixtape, you would know that he either smokes weed or drinks because on quite a few of his songs going back to the ja rule beef that he sounds drunk on those songs.if you have listened to some of jayz’ lyrics from the the in my lifetime collection and even on roc la familia, he says some crazy shit. if you have ever watched a kanye interview or listened to diamonds from sierra leone, kanye claims that he smokes and drinks and cant help himself so please stop acting like u know these ppl. anyway i guess the point im tryin to make is that the reason why music is garbage is not because of the drugs artists use its because of lack of creativity and pure laziness which why ppl are screaming for outkast, jayz, nas, dre, eminem and even lupe fiasco. STEP YA GAME UP NIGGAS!!!

Meka Soul it is a pity that you judged what I had to say purely by focusing on my cussing. As for reading between the lines (pun intended) I suggest you take ur own advice, because I was commenting on the logic of reducing great art to record sales. By the way, other genres do not necessary sell a gajillion copies as you put it. In fact, many labels use pop, R&B and rap artists to fund their jazz and classical projects. Besides, drugs is a serious issue whether you are an artist or not. To say that hip-hop or even hiphop sales are threatened by drug-use when you ignore corporate consolidation, clear channel monopoly and a host of external factors and pressures, it plain stupid.

its all real says:
Hip-Hop is pop at the moment, thats why records aren’t moving like they used to. Tupac, Jay-Z, Biggie, Nas, DMX, Rakim, Dre, Snoop, and others dont have records out. So we’re left with, Timbaland rappin with Nelly Furtado,
Chamillionaire, and Wyclef Jean with his hips.

Interesting read byron but get your facts straight, especially if you’re writing about such a sensitive subject. have you actually watched the spike jonze documentary? what you said happened to fatlip is not the story told on there, and in fact did not happen at the height of fatlips problems but early on in their career( watch it again).

Who ever wrote this is a fuckin moron. Since when is smokin trees such a bad problem? 80% of th epeople that live in my city smoke trees and i live in an upperclass city. and since when is drinking a drug? huh. Im sure the reason why no records are being sold are because the new sound isn’t very good. Have you ever heard of Cypress Hill? all they do is smoke bud and they are leading a campaign to legalize trees. and almost everyone of their records are double platinum. Its not the drugs dumbass its the shitty sound.

Dope’s never really been the problem as far as I’m concerned. To some artists (if not most), drug use has helped them “wander” for more artistic vision. But unfortunately now, there aren’t any REAL artists out. That’s why the underground scene is poppin’ so hard right now. Big business has stripped away everything that makes this music/lifestyle what it is. It’s the hungry, dedicated cats out here REALLY livin’ the life that’s goin’ to revive the game, not the complete eradication of drug use. http://www.myspace.com/luckyredmusic
