Lil Wayne is still the hip-hop king, but he’s been dethroned from the top of the Billboard 200 charts. Coldplay debuted at number one with their latest album Viva La Vida, which sold over 700,000 copies in its first week.
Weezy’s numbers dropped by close to 70 percent, but the Cash Money star still moved an impressive amount in his second week. After selling over one million copies of Tha Carter III in its first week of release, Wayne followed it up by pushing 308,505 copes of TC3 during its second week.
Plies continues to do well. The Florida rapper sold just over 67,000 copies of his sophomore set, Definition of Real. The album currently stands at number five overall on the charts.
2 Pistols, who has a hit on his hands with “She Got It” featuring T-Pain, made his debut on the charts. His album, Death Before Dishonor, however, only managed to move 15,764 copies.
Texas’ TMI Boyz received an unexpected bump. The group moved just over 18,000 copies of their album, Grindin’ For A Purpose. The amount marked a rare sales increase of 109 percent for the group’s album in its second week of release.—Anthony Thomas

JD’s blog makes more and more sense. Not only do the consumer care about sells but the consumer also chooses what they want to like based off of what is selling. No wonder labels buy albums back for the first week.

Keak da Sneak dropped a dope album last week and only sold 3800 copies…
That doesn’t pay for SHit.
3800 x $10 = $38000. The retailer gets about half of that. Koch records gets the other 25-30%. That leaves Keak with less than $10K.

It’s the A&R’s- not the lack of talent. A&R’s control who is signed- and distributed.
Radio Stations play the crap forced upon them, or the DJ’s generally support it, so if other good stuff isn’t from that station’s metro area (the artist) forget about that artist getting spins much…
At least a Dozen or two Solid LA/Bay area artists are out there. when LA tried to agree with KMEL to exchange playing music of 4-6 new artists From LA to BAY and back, Big Von denied the LA stations.

incorrect:
Retail might pay $8 per copy, and drop the album first week $13. Then they raise it after a number of weeks to $16. Retailers make a nice profit when they make a sale.
Koch won’t take more than 50% but they will take less if the artist (like Keak) has the right lawyers and brokers the right deal. Pencil Keak in to make at least $4.50 per copy
sold first week. $17,100 @ 3,800 copies.
He can push at least 10-15thousand copies even in this recession, and Keak has sold 30-50K copies during the good days. He will be just fine because he diversifies.
You can’t say that for a lot of the younger, dumber artists who think being a “boss” means filing the name only for their own company (while they have no substance behind it.)

So your saying Keak gets $4.50 per copy and he’ll max out at about 15 thousand in a recession….
Thats only $67,500 bones….I know he gets papered up on his shows….But, $67.5 aint shit after taxes.
