What’s The Illest Freestyle Beat Ever?

Tuesday Jun 3 10:19 AM CDT posted by xxl staff

So I was on nahright yesterday and saw that Eskay posted this Papoose “A Millie” Freestyle.

Obviously, it’s not the first and probably won’t be the last. Just last week, Jadakiss absolutely demolished the beat on his freestyle with Cory Gunz. Come to think about it, a good number of “A Millie” freestyles have been poppin’ up as of late. I guess it’s fair to crown “A Millie” the freestyle beat du jour. As you guys know, whenever someone comes out with a heater production-wise, every rapper and their momma wants to give it their own treatment.

Like, remember when “Grindin” came out? The beat was so fire, dudes were spazzing on it for months. The same goes for instrumentals like “Breathe,” and “Whoa.” We can probably go as far as “It’s All About The Benjamins.” Let’s not forget Biggie’s “Who Shot Ya.” It’s almost like all the nice MCs have ripped that beat at least once. Shoot, even my cousin Mayhem merked this joint off the top back in the day and I remember Mos Def murdering it on Black On Both Sides.

I’m ready to say “Who Shot Ya” is the G.O.A.T. of freestyle beats. The beat just makes you wanna rap. I remember being in a whip full of non-rappers and we were playing my cuz’s instrumental tape. Everybody just started trying to spit all over the damn place. But, if I’m to think about something more recent, I guess…I’ve been slacking on my mixtape listening, so I’m drawing a blank. I’m sure dudes have been dropping their share of “Rider Pt.2″ freestyles, though.

Personally, my favorite freestyle beat is Craig Mack’s “Flava In Ya Ear.” The beat is funky and it’s just the right tempo for you to pace your flow. That’s what I wanna hear ill dudes flow over. I wish I heard Canibus destroy that beat before he officially went cuckoo. Tuh…tuh…tuh…tuh! “Who Shot Ya” is the G.O.A.T, but “Flava In Ya Ear” is my pick. What about you MCs? What’s your favorite freestyle beat? You non-MCs weigh in too. If you had to pick a beat to freestyle, what would it be?

Incilin says:

Yeah, “Who Shot Ya?” is prolly the best. Even my man murdered that shit one time, nigga did the beat two times over and went for like 200 bars on it. Papoose also destroyed that beat recently. Plus Beans has a crazy joint on that, and Game flipped it once too. I’m pretty sure G-Unit went over that beat while at Hot 97 with Flex one time. And Mos Def did it crazy too. I can’t remember any other people who flipped it tho. Anyone think of someone else?

But “Triumph” and “Benjamins” (”I even let you rhyme to the Benjamin beat” - Big Pun)is both popular beats to flip too. Others include; “Made You Look” “Show Me What You Got” (since Jay aint do shit with it) “Show Some D’s” “Nuthin But A G Thang” and a bunch of other shit I can’t think of.

My personal pick is Marvel off of Ghostface- Iron Man. It’s the last track on the album. The Rza gives you like two minutes of straight instrumental once the last verse is over. It’s best to listen to the song from the beginning to get some momentum and once the Rza’s verse is done you hop on the track and unleash your spittage. “Black man watch out sea saltwater trout!” Classic material.
