Dean Barrow, the father of incarcerated MC Shyne, was elected as the first Black prime minister of Central American country Belize on Friday (February 8). According to Reuters, Barrow’s election marks the end of 10 years of single party rule in the country, which has long been plagued by bribery scandals and economic woes. He will take the reigns from Palestinian born Said Musa who has experienced waning popularity in recent years. Barrow’s platform was based on eliminating the country’s of a rash of embezzlement scandals and reinvigorating the lagging economy. “This clearly is a people’s victory. It’s the people’s judgment on the PUP. They’re giving us a huge vote of confidence,” Barrow said during a radio interview after the results indicated he was in the lead. It is believed that his victory can be attributed to a surge in youth voters. Barrow’s son Shyne, a former Bad Boy Records artist, was convicted of weapons possession, first-degree assault and reckless endangerment in connection with a 1999 shooting in New York. The shooting occurred at Club New York in Manhattan where the rapper had been partying with Sean “Diddy” Combs and his then girlfriend Jennifer Lopez. When a clubgoer threw money in Diddy’s face, Shyne produced a handgun and fired several shots, striking a bystander named Natania Reuben was struck in the face.
