Listening to this god-awful new Wu-Tang album yesterday, it occurred to me that the rest of the Wu-Tang Clan might have to ditch the RZA, if they’re gonna have a successful career as a group from here on out. I’m convinced his mind is just not there anymore.
In that interview where Raekwon bitches about how the RZA was fucking up the 8 Diagrams with his production, he mentioned that him and some other people were thinking about putting together another Wu-Tang album next year, this time without the RZA’s input. At the time, I didn’t think this was a very good idea, since, after all, we heard what happened all of the other times Raekwon tried to put out an album without the RZA. But now I’m convinced that this could very well be the best idea Raekwon has had since the mid ’90s. I really do hope he makes this happen.
If you think about it, it’s been a long time since the RZA put out an album that was nails all the way through. I know he did a lot of work on Ghostface’s Supreme Clientele, which is pretty much the best album evar. And I was a big fan of his solo album, the Digital Bullet, which came out around the same time. Neither The W nor Iron Flag was what you might call an unqualified masterpiece, but they both had their moments. If you combined all of the good ideas on each of them (which is what they should have done anyway), you could probably come up with a pretty good album.
But even that’s been six or seven years ago. In the interim, what has the RZA done? I’m asking partly because it’s not like I’m the guy’s motherfucking biographer and partly because none of what I’ve heard from him in the past several years has been all that impressive. The Birth of a Prince was the definition of a shit sandwich, and this is coming from a guy who swears by both of those Bobby Digital albums to this day. I suppose he’s scored a few impressive paydays scoring kung fu films and what have you, but I’m not aware that any of his recent scores are better than or altogether different from his fucking brilliant score for the movie Ghost Dog. Which again dates back about seven years now.
Knowing what I know about the new Wu-Tang album, his post-2000 production output, and the fact that he’s under the impression that he invented Serato, I’m left with no other choice but to assume that the RZA smoked himself silly some time around the turn of the millennium and hasn’t been right ever since. The hip-hop equivalent of that guy Pink Floyd’s Wish You Were Here was about, except without the sense to go buy a house somewhere and spend the rest of his life tending to his garden. Hopefully he doesn’t end up in some PCP-induced incident in a shopping mall somewhere, but I wouldn’t be surprised if the RZA doesn’t have another good idea in his life.
Which brings me to my point. If Pink Floyd didn’t put out Dark Side of the Moon until after Syd Barrett went batshit, what’s there to suggest that the Wu-Tang Clan can’t put out a good album in 2008? It’s been well documented that Raekwon, Ghostface, Method Man, and U-God all have beef with the RZA over money anyway, so it shouldn’t be too difficult to convince them to split with him. The GZA might not be as willing to go along with it, since him and RZA are cousins and all, but you know what? He sucks now anyway. Try listening to some of his verses on 8 Diagrams without cringing a little bit. (Ol’ Dirty Bastard obviously won’t be an issue one way or the other.)
Since Ghostface is obviously the only one in the group who can consistently tell the difference between a good idea and a bad one, I say he should be the leader of any post-RZA Wu-Tang Clan. Imagine if the production on 8 Diagrams was on a par with, say, the beats The Pretty Toney Album, hardly any of which was produced by the RZA. The Wu-Tang Clan would be so back right now. It also seems like he’s been much more proactive about the process of promoting his work - touring, putting out books and dolls and what have you - than anyone else in the group. That’s the kind of focus the Wu-Tang Clan is gonna need, if it wants to be anywhere near the level it was at in the mid ’90s.

Josh says:
For fear of sounding like Rza’ biographer, he’s been pretty much scoring movie soundtracks and whatnot, and let’s not forget Afro Samurai.
That Afro Samurai soundtrack was pretty dope.
He also, if I’m not mistaken, scored both Kill Bill movies, one of the Blade movies, Soul Plane (yikes), and probably some more stuff that I can’t seem to think of.
But, yeah, it’s been pretty obvious that Rza and the Clan aren’t on the same page anymore.
I haven’t listened to the leak yet, because I tend not to listen to albums until they actually come out, but I wasn’t expecting much.
Though, peace to Sincere for sending me two links.
My guess is that Rifkind reached out to Rza and said “Wouldn’t it be ill if we did another Wu album?”
And he didn’t really think about whether it would work or not.
After all, Rifkind’s been struggling to find something/someone that will keep him in business other than Akon.
See: loud.com and battlerap.com (I think that’s what’s its called).
David Banner, as ill as he might be, hasn’t been able to come back from “Play.”
Pharoah flopped.
Melissa Jimenez is ill, but I don’t see her getting big.
Terror Squad ain’t over there anymore, and Joe’s been doing aight on his own with Imperial.
Topic? No buzz.
I can’t think of anything else.
This was a gamble.
Rifkin was hoping that all the late-20somethings (late 70s babies if you will (Sickamore’s been a blogging machine since he left xxlmag.com by the way)) whose lives were changed by the Wu (read: me and my friends) would go out and buy this album en mass.
He’s probably right to an extent.
1/2 of us don’t download stuff anyway.
But 1/4 of us probably don’t even listen to hip-hop anymore unless it’s hip-pop.
But I digress.
If the Clansmen (no David Duke) have such a problem with Rza, they probably shouldn’t have signed that fucked up contract with Wu-Tang Productions back in ‘93.
Yeah, Rifkind let them all pursue non-Loud solo deal, but they were all tied to Rza until the birth of their first born grandsons (which I suppose is close to happening for Gza and U-God (and ain’t Ghost’s son like 19????).
In any event, if you look back through history, Ghost co-executive produced most good Wu albums.
That tells me something.
Rza should’ve at least paid Ghostface what he owes him, executive produced this album with him, and then maybe Bol’s negative ass would’ve had something good to say about this album.

I don’t actually think the beats on 8 Diagrams are bad beats, I just think the old-fogy rappers who comprise WTC have no idea what to do with them. At this point GZA and Rae can only sound good over boom-bappy shit. I’m not sure who exactly would sound comfortable over some of these beats, but musically they’re good enough.

And we’ll end up with Ice Cream Part 2 and Immobilarity instead of Cuban Links. Or HOw about Ghost, whose album suffered from a bunch of terrible beats if nothing else. He made Back Like That. Wow. The last few Ghostface albums have shitted on any thing the RZA’s worked on album wise in quite some time. I’ll even go out on a limb to say that Ghost’s spin off click, Theodore Unit, may have done better with their last joint than the Wu will do this time around with 8 Diagrams. On most of the songs I’ve heard so far, Raekwon sounds like he sipped massive doses of Nyquil before hitting the booth, and who gives a fuck about what the rest of those guys have to say anyway, outside of Ghost, Meth, and maybe GZA. RZA’s verses have always been laughable, U-God spits the same shit every song exactly the same way, Masta Killah comes with some extra boring shit that’s not even halfway clever, and Inspektah Deck is…blah. And this coming from a fan of the early Wu years, you know, when their shit was fresh.

It shows once more that the average HipHop fan is a sad little man with his brain capacity not exceeding that of a monkey.
The music on 8 Diagrams is years ahead of the current state of HH, it is very innovative and original. For me 8D is easily the best album of ‘07, the soundscapes are just phenomenal. It makes sense that most people don’t get it, after all the ‘rappers’ that run rap right now are on the same level as their fans (mentally at least, financially its a little different).
The other thing, there can’t be a Wu Tang album without RZA. He owns the Wu brand, so regardless, he in fact could fire ALL of them if he likes to.
RZA is ahead. Same as his first Bobby Digital album, I thought it was futuristic back then, but it still is. 8 Diagrams is great today and will be a great album in 2017. In 2017 all the current garbage, nobody will listen to that anymore.

“8 Diagrams” is sick and well cool, RZA did and great job, granted not his best, but super none the less, so whatever problems the Clan has besides this they need to sit the eff’ down and figure it out…
Now listening to “Big Doe Rehab” right now, mmm well it’s okay, but not up to par with “8 Diagrams” sry… and Raekwon’s last effort sorta “Ice Water: Poluted Water” wasn’t that good either, so yeah…
Have a sit down guys(the Clan) please, and work this shit out, what does ODB think when he looks down from above…

Who Dat? says:
Effects of the interenet(S) on the rap industry -
1) “Columnists” like a one so called Bol who have acquired ( somehow )adequate acumen to review albums.
2) Stans who gargle out their approval of whatever the bloggers write and cannot be heard quite right because they got the bloggers dikc in their mouth.
3) Every one putting in their opinion on what is whack when they probably have been listening to rap since Outkast released Ms Jackson.
4) People no longer buying CDs ( I’m guilty too)
Now think about it. Rappers cant sell CDs and to add insult to injury, bloggers who aren’t even man enough to look straight into a camera ( that parker report tish was PATHETIC Bol )critique their art from a basement wearing nothing but soiled lingerie. That is the state of things…. LAWDY!!

if so, i hope you enjoy. don’t come crying when judgement day hits you son.

rza not handling the beats on a wu album would effectually make it a non-wu album.

Here’s what I think. That instead of the guys that Ghostface recruits for his albums. Have Mathematics become the new RZA. I mean look at all the awesome shit he’s done. Cause I think a Wu album should sound like a Wu album and not a Ghost album because there is a fine line between the two. Also I see what you mean about the GZA. Which is too bad. He’s my fave Wu member. But hopefully he’ll smartedn up with that Pro Tools joint he has coming out in January.

Everyone should just chill the fuck out!
Rza was the one who came up with the whole wu idea in the first place
Rza was the one who produced or directed any wu album worth talking about.
If Rza wants to try a new direction let him, you can’t expect someone to stay still and do the same thing over & over again can u? If he made a 36 chambers pt.2 ya’ll would be dissing him on some “oh he did that again?”. Look when miles went into new directions alot of the jazz comunity fronted, they weren’t ready for it. Years later those same dudes are all over his dick.Every Stevie Wonder album isn’t dope but there is no disputing his genius is there?
Let it marinate for a bit, look at it from more than just one angle, and then thank Rza for giving hip hop the greatest group to date!
P.S. Bol you an idiot for trying to diss the Gza straight up!!!!

Raekwon called RZA a “hip-hop hippie” - the absolute definition of everything he was railing against on the intro to disc 2 of “Triumph.” Maybe RZA needs some gatorade and a cheeseburger to get back to normalcy…

First of all, if I remember correctly a lot of people did not get “36 chambers” on the first go around, and same thing with “Wu forever” and as far as “Iron Flag’ and the ‘W’
forgetaboutit—Thus these people are not expected to ‘get’ “8 Diagrams”—and therefore should stick to listen to Camron, Jim Jones, Soulja Boy, Mims etc…
Calling the Gza’s verses on 8 Diagrams weak is dumb; the feeling is that he should have been present on almost every track, but then I remember his words of keep things short= make ‘em twice strong–Lyrics sun got lyrics for days–go back and listen to some of his shit. Meth sounds rejuvenated, Rae is always Rae, except y’all keep expecting him to make anothet OB4CL 2, 3, 0r 4, you get the point–go listen to the Vatican Mixtapes-peep the Rakim tribute—Ghost has been doing Ghost, funny thing is none of y’all went and copped More Fish or Big Doe Rehab–Master Killa killed his verses and surprisingly flipped his flow-
INS–straight Fire–even Cappo came out lighting up s—t–U-God well, you know, he tries as usual.
As far as caling them old, well we all have to get there—who’s carrying the weight? (go watch 106 whatever from now ’till whenever and the Mickey mouse–Fred Flinstone flavor of the day rappers) yep…nobody
Peace
