• KRS-One Re-launches the Stop the Violence Movement

Tuesday Oct 30 12:57 PM CDT posted by xxl staff

Nearly 20 years after he first gathered some of the hottest MCs in the game for the monumental “Self Destruction” posse cut, KRS-One has announced the re-launch of his Stop the Violence Movement. Described as a “multi-dimensional and long-term movement,” the Stop the Violence 2007 campaign will utilize public service announcements from well known artists urging young people to help bring an end to violence in their communities. The spots will also provide a platform for artists with controversial material to address the subject matter of their work and provide a balance to the often violent and misogynistic images they put forth. Some artists who have already signed on to produce PSA’s include Lil Wayne, Ludacris, 50 Cent, Immortal Technique and Doug E. Fresh. “We will have an ongoing presence with celebrity audio and visual PSAs, lectures, youth programs, a CD- soundtrack and film,” KRS explains. “A new ‘Stop the Violence’ Hip Hop anthem is in the works.” Back in 1989, KRS and his Boogie Down Productions crew organized the first incarnation of the Movement, bringing together artists such as Chuck D, MC Lyte, Kool Moe Dee and D-Nice for the song and video “Self Destruction,” in response to the rise in black on black violence. For more information on the Stop the Violence Movement 2007 and to hear a sample PSA, visit http://www.stoptheviolence09.org/.

Robert please leave your pessismistic attitude out of the genre I have loved since 1984 (you might call this the P.E. times, you know pre-Eminem.). We don’t need people like you in our culture, as a matter of fact we would prefer not to have you in it. I know you for what you are, a degenerate, prejudiced scumbag. You try to pass yourself off as an OG, yet you demean the music and culture which produced the symbol you so badly want to be.
So do yourself and Eminem a favor and step off, because you don’t listen to the music. You just skim through it.

    The Infamous Mr. P says:

arists like krs1 are significant i think because they thrived during a time where hip hop stood for something. it brought people together to fight the system and to save our youth and protect our communities. there is no question that everyone should support this movement, and then maybe finally white people, parents and the government can take a look in the mirror and stop blamin rap for everything.

It’s cool KRS is doing this.

What KRS should do is begin the song with the sound bite of him threatening Adisa Banjoko at Stanford University.

“what I’d really like to do is jump over this table and beat your fucking ass”, “I’m here right now, what do you want to do?” KRS referred to Banjoku as an “enemy of Hip Hop” and an “FBI agent”.

    Official! says:

Its cool that those artist have decided to join stop the violence movement, but its also sad that the two top artist(Lil Wayne, 50 Cent) are part of the reason the youth is somewhat corrupted. But, I hope others like kanye, Lupe, Talib Kweli, Mos Def, Snoop, Nas, Little Brother, the game, and others join in. Even though its contradicting we need the main stream hardcore rappers because the children are gonna take it serious if its coming from them, but I better not hear jeezy coke rapping ass on this even though I like his music.

The Infamous Mr. P & Official! made some good points.

I’m glad KRS is doing his part to rebuild & add-on to the Culture. He’s taking care of his responsibility as a civilized being. Its up to the ones who have impressionable minds to choose between life and death (metaphorically speaking).

This cool and all but when are we all going to realize that it ain’t rappers making these cats go crazy. It’s how most of us are taught when moms is working two jobs trying to take care of us and ain’t nobidy us around but the streets. It’s sad to say but most of us don’t have that drive to make a difference within ourselves without the streets deterring it some kind of way. So as a whole stop putting this on rappers cuz Wayne and Fifty both gangsta rappers but do I think everything they say is true.

    LANSKI says:

A lot has gone on since Self Destruction. Let’s not attempt to recreate the old but create something new in honor of what came before; something relevant. The years have solidified a culture of violence that is going to be hard to penetrate.

I would also like to see real solutions presented to the people; not just a well off entertainer telling us to stop the violence on a PSA with out any real solutions or options as to how to accomplish such a thing.

These days you turn the other cheek; you’re getting shot in the face.

Everyone’s always talking about how “real” they are; this is an opportunity to have a real conversation with some real people. Let’s face it, real around the way shooters and hustlers think most rappers are full of shit. So there is a need to hit the prisons and get some of these big hustlers and killers involved. Some one may listen to real gangster before they’ll listen to someone that just plays gangsta’ for Viacom and Clear Channel.

This monkey is still around? No one cares about you, Larry. I guess your IQ of 100 makes you intelligent for a black guy, but black guys aren’t the rap consumers that count. We, white men are. So do us a favor and shut the fuck up. Hip hop will always be linked to violence, which is much of its appeal.

Make the world a better place, weed ur backyard. We don’t need saints to do it, some people have just lost it from watchin too much MTV, they just need a wake up call. Should be easy. Next thing, get Bush and his weaponry merchants out. Then fix up the environment. Then be happy.

Janitor Snoop can work his way up through the ranks of these battlers, b4 mouthin off bout fixn the Pommie streets…
