Granted, it’s silly to proclaim anyone in hip-hop the king of anything in an age when top-selling artists stuggle to go platinum, and some years there aren’t enough decent albums to put together a top 10 list, but whatever. For business purposes, hip-hop can’t have a bad year (or decade). Just a different one.
TI, hip-hop’s foremost activist, has declared in interviews with the Associated Press that he’s the King of the South, and has even gone so far as to name his new album King. As sad as it sounds (and really is), King is the only rap album on Billboard’s top 10 right now. It’ll be this year’s fastest-selling album until something good comes along.
That said, TI isn’t the only jig in the South moving units. King came out in a weak-ass spring for hip-hop, and also benefited from being released the same day as a major motion picture. For being the top-selling rapper out, TI is hardly a household name. You’d expect the King of the South to be a known figure outside of hip-hop circles a la a Snoop or a Jay-Z.
“What You Know” is ubiquitous, to be sure, but not any more so than several other southern rap songs released in the past six months or so. Take for example “Lean With It, Rock With It,” “Laffy Taffy,” “Grillz,” and so on and so forth. And note that I’m not purposely using examples of awful rap songs to prove some sort of point. Those really are the most popular rap songs from the South I could think of.
Don’t hate the player. Hate yourself.
Young Jeezy, to me, seems a more worthy candidate for King of the South. Where as “What You Know” is popular, “Soul Survivor” was all over the place last year, a year that also brought us the likes of “Stay Fly” and “Still Tippin’.” His snowman t-shirt scandal brought him a certain degree of notoriety outside of the South, and as Sickamore mentioned on this site, Jeezy is apparently really popular outside the South as well.
For what it’s worth, I liked Thug Motivation 101, or whatever it’s called, a lot more than I do King, though obviously I’m no conniosseur of the form. What do the rest of you bags think?

Listen………I’m gone say this once and for all. You have to handle yourself in a king manner to be the king of the south. (example:Jay-Z) Jay-Z ruled the streets and the charts at the same time, and still could cross over w/ Rock groups and wear flip flops w/o losing his street cred. Jeezy can no do this, he won’t cross over good enough, he has the streets on lock although. T.I. has one of the best flows you’ll find, in a young entrepreneur……..Jay? What more can I say……plus Buck isn’t even a close 3rd, even though he real as fuck

I must plead ignorance to Jeezy. I tuned him out after hearing him rhyme “John Madden” with “John Madden.” “Go Crazy” was flames and his voice and ad-libs are catchy as hell. But after listening to “King” several times now, TI clearly is the King of the South. When you can make 2 Just Blaze bangers better than an NY mixtape rapper, 1 Native Tongue joint hotter than anything Kweli has done in the past 3 years, and a complete gangster epic like “What You Know” within the first half of your album, you’re doing something right. Plus, his voice, flow, charisma and actual lyrics are exceptional for a Southern MC (alongside Andre 3000, Lil’ Wayne and Luda). Jeezy has a better marketing tool (angry snowmen t-shirts) but he’s had one album out. TI’s progressed over several albums to reach this point just like Jay-Z. Hov didn’t become King till Vol.2 and Vol. 3, his 3rd and 4th albums.

I’ve been viewing this site for a while & never felt required to defend my region until recently. I’m continually growing tired of the degradation of my home turf. The South is being labeled as housing week lyricists and contributing to what some people call “The Demise of real Hip Hop” whatever that means. This is said because, Southern rappers or just any other region, tend to speak with a different vernacular than those of your native regions (wherever that may be). Jay-Z said it best “Do u listen to music or just skim through it?” Music is here to entertain, inform, and cater to different emotions. Who’s to say that every song on an album has to cater to one particular element? Your parents need to teach u right from wrong. With that said music is like Gumbo, and without all the ingredients u would have some bland shit.
P.S. This is coming from a young black Hip Hop head executive in Corporate America. Rip Soulja Slim….New Orleans get yo Money Right, we’ve seen the bottom now we got to get to the top!

to be honest, there is really nothing wrong with d4l or dfb, or any of the local talent down here blowin up.
The songs are good, catchy, fun, and pretty much indigenous to this region.
I’m a hip hop head, but right now the music is too boring. Who cares if these guys made a dance, some simple songs, got everybody involved, got a little cheese, and are trying to do their own thing.
Nobody was really clownin flavor flav, humpty, or any other of those buffoons when they were having a good time with the music and being stupid.
DFB can rap too, listen closer, they’re doing the same ish every other mc in the country is doing right now, just with more style, flair, humor, and silliness.
To be honest, DFB and D4L, and a myriad of other southern artist are a breath of fresh air when it comes to “commercial” rap. Way more toned down than crunk, but not so boring and poorly produced as some sh**ty Kanye West track, or piss poor Jay-Z album, or subpar Ghostface album, or unlistenable Dipset album. All albums which I wasted good money on.
If Raekwon ish sucks, I’m just about through with the east, and the rest of the country is too.

Its hard to say who is king of the South b/c there are so many good southern rappers.
All things considered wouldn’t you have to at least consider Scarface for King (longevity in the game, consistency, album sales?, charisma, lyrical skill)
–I will say this about T.I. he is consistent, each album has expanded on the last. Trap Muzik was an album that opened the door to rappers like jeezy, and Urban Legend proved T.I. has star potential. Since the album King. is considered by many T.I.’s best effort yet and is sure to outsell any of his previous albums, and T.I. has a sucessful movie ( A sign he has charisma, swagger, and cross-over appeal to move units)T.I. has a good reason for proclaiming he is King.
–I know OutKast is a group but i would have to say they are the “uncrowned” Kings of Southern hip-hop. They deserve all the respect in the world from any artists from Georgia. Plus they got the sells that bury any other rapper from Georgia. No other Southern rapper has sold as many records as them period.

Bol ur comments about being known outside hip hop don’t make sense.
snoop dog and Jay-Z were rapping for years with major deals before they were “household”names, and Biggie had to die and Jay-z had to put out 2 more albums for Jay-Z to even think about being considered King of New york.
Furthermore, Snoop wasn’t a household name until maybe 5 years ago, and when did he start rapping? 1992
–What i am saying as it takes time to become King, it doesnt happen after one album (..Jeezy) and T.I. is crossing-over with his sucessful album.
Also, just b/c T.I.’s album has been the only “good” album to come out this year (in your opinion) doesn’t mean King. isn’t a truely great album. It means other albums couldn’t compete with the King.

TI is getting up there… I mean with that ATL movie doing decent business, he’s slowly on his way to becoming more noticed by a larger (whiter?) portion of the US. I mean, he got recognition off that last album, with the Jay-Z chorus and shit. I think Jeezy blew up bigger, and it helps that Jay is co-signing, but I think TI is more marketable in the long run. it all depends on how they work these King singles…

I listen to T.I. and Jeezy. Also, I enjoy both of their music. I feel that since Scareface doesn’t want to be King of tha South. You would still have to consider UGK,8ball & MJG, Goodie Mob, and Outkast and if they don’t want it. Then, the title of King of Tha South is up for grab. I believe that the King of Tha South is the person who has been reping the south for a long time when no one wanted to hear what we had to say. However, Outkast did tell everyone at the source awards that the south had something to say. Think about it.

Snoop was a household name b/c a murder rap (one of the first nationally publicized ones involving a rapper, if not the first) introduced him to white america like a tour de force. There was a hell of a lot of news coverage the day of that verdict. Notoriety works for a gangster rapper a hell of alot faster than fame. Ask Tupac. Nobody outside hip hop knew who he was until his rape charge/shooting incidents.
Jay-Z didn’t get that type of notoriety. He had to grind hard to get his (no homo) and Orphan Annie didn’t hurt either.
Furhtermore, people (white) DIDN”T know who the Notorious BIG was UNTIL he died.

Its more than rappign and sells…its respect…Pimp C explain this on one of the endings of the King Album tracks…
T.I. isnt king yet…but he could be…but to be king you have to have stauts, sales, respect, skills….TI doesnt have all those yet but he is close and lil wayne is with him ont he level even if lil wayne said nothing about the immigrant situation

Impact - While the influence is not huge he opened doors for all the “trap” rappers.
Popularity - Gold in a week. Even Jay didn’t do that with The Black Album.

Brian says:
Let’s get one thing clear, T.I. jumped out the box yell King of the South one to get notoriety, secondly because he meant it. At the time when he was coming out there was only one southern (Ludacris) artist that could hold a candle to him lyrically. That’s not including the Legends (Ball, Face, Bun, etc…). I’m Serious came out possibly the best of his albums but mainly sold by word of mouth. Then Trap Muzik came out and he switched his flow up a little. Then came the In Da Streets mix tapes. If you want a real feel of T.I. check the mix tapes. Next came Urban Legend and King. Both albums were substantially different from the first two. Namely his rapid fire flow that he sometimes uses was non-existent. His rhymes and songs became less innovative. And why, for the same reason Hov switched up after Vol. 1; records sales.
Jeezy is hot but in no way shape or form is e even a dot on the radar when it comes to rocking the mic the way T.I. can. I mean let’s be serious Jeezy doesn’t use metaphors or anything else when he rhymes. He’ll use the same word to rhyme with itself. The guy that wrote this article ought to do some real research before making asinine comments.

It aint all bout how hood a nigga is, or how many keys he done had. It about lyrical talent, street credibility, and how good of a show you put on. I dont see no one in the south doing like him. Young Buck, he’s full of talent, but i havent heard or seen anything from him. Jeezy, yeah he’s good, but im kinda curious if he can rap about anything other than this snowman shit. If yall wont crown T.I. the king, at least give it to some legends like Bun B, Pimp C, 8ball, MJG, Pastor troy.

Bol, you consistently re-establish your self as an ignorant ass-jockey.
TI has a great album, full of potential singles that would garner a considerable amount of spins on radio.
Without TI’s album Trap Muzik, Young Jeezy would still be selling CD-R’s out of his trunk, Jay-Z wouldn’t care who he is, therefore neither would America.

I’m not sure how shit like Laffy Taffy and so called rappers like Lil Wayne became Hip-Hop, but ya’ll back home IE- East Coast beef more than you do spit. I copped Urban Legend as my first T.I. album and didn’t like it or T.I. that much until a month before King came out, but during that prior month I discovered that T.I. is the ish, and i got King, then a week later got Trap Muzik i was happy to have a building colection of T.I.albums. I mean listen to the dude he is consistent, not on just album after album but on a single album alone but Jeezy was only able to delight me with Let’s Get It/ Sky’s Limit, Go Crazy [Remix] (featuring a rapper better than all - Jigga), Last Of A dying Breed, Trap Star and of course the debut song Soul Survivor on Thug Mo … 101 …, other wise the album is wack with all the same Mannie Fresh beats (and i like Mannie but got bored) (while T.I mixes it up). I like Young Buck but i aint heard enough of him as my brother won’t swing me Straight Outta Cashville, but then again there is Luda who i’ve been listening to and enjoying since he first came out, so to say he doesn’t even have a shot as KS (King of the South) is wrong , but me and my pals have been discussing and i say yes and they say no so u know T.I is big time and he qualifies.
P.S. eh yo 50 get back to making albums like Get Rich Or Die Tryin’. The Massacre was not hot so please revert to the good old days ok 2k2 where we were sayin “What Up Gangsta”. SO he is no king of the south, stop taking this fake over the real deal! 90% of these rappers today are coming from Biggy and Tupac and still no good ass rappers have come forth to be a great deal, or else most of these rappers today would be saying “may i have your order please!” lol. I am from the Bay Area, but im posted up in the A at the moment. and really down here everybody be callin themselves the King of the South. T.I. tries to say that with his new album’s title. Lil Flip(although not from the ATL) claims to be the king of the south. Lil Jon has said that as well as king of crunk which i dont disagree with. and Scrappy c-c-c-claims to be the prince. I don’t understand why the hell they dont just call it a democracy or something and stop being ruled by a king who cant even be decided by the candidates. I got respect for the south, it is my home for now, but come on. the south can turn an era of non-dancing people and scream something at them and make everyone snap, or do the two-step, or lean and rock, that takes great power and all, but just leave the king and queen and prince and whatever else they wanna call themselves and throw it out the window. i agree with most of you and i hope yall do the same with me. sorry i had to make this so long, but when you get me started on something, i just might not stop. holla!

Im tired of people hatin on T.I.P. One of the best southern lyricist we have had since Scarface, OutKast, and Goodie Mob. There is no limit to this guys ability. I know its not really fair to say hes the king of the south cuz of Scarface but u have to think about the situation. T.I. is puttin out better music than anybody in the south right now, give or take a Lil Wayne who has no type of format to his songs, but has crazy lyrical ability. Lil Wayne is the only one who can contend for the King of da south title against T.I. i would say Luda but hes to animated wit his flow. Sorta like a busta ryhmes type. And Ludas style or delivery is not better than Lil Waynes or T.I. And the comment the publisher made about jezzy better than T.I is a fuckin joke. jezzy a real dude, but he cant fuckin rap. anyway T.I is one of the most consistent rappers in Hip Hop, not just in the south. this guy has put out albums every year. 2001 debut Im Serious, 2002 hella mixtapes. 2003 Trap Muzik 2004 Urban Legend, 2005 PSC album, and 2006 The Leak mixtape and The KING album. Pretty consistent if u ask me. T.I is the shit for lack of better words. Nobody was takin notice to the title King of da south until T.I said he was. Now everybodys mad. get a life 4real. Like he said on the first song on Urban Legend, (Im the King u just sour cuz u aint think of it arent u). I want to comment on this article because I think alot of people misunderstand T.I. First off I want to start by saying I’m from the dirty, dirty. And like T.I. states real recognize real so when he says he’s the King of the South I know exactly what he’s talking about. It’s not who’s as mainstream as the next, but about credibilty. Who’s real and who’s fake. Who’s handling their business like they suppose to. Secondly, yes Jeezy is a talented rapper with an excellent flow, but he is far from a King. T.I. has built up his community by opening his own construction company building homes for the less fortunate. T.I. refused to be second best when he got his first record deal to a major label, thus, leaving the company and starting his own Grand Hustle label. He also donated $50,000 dollars to the victims of hurricane Katrina. Finally, please don’t compare those sugary, watered downed lyrics such as “Laffy Taffy” to T.I.’s flow. T.I. is a lyrical genius, hence, him being labeled the Jay-Z of the South.

Be honest before he said he was who actually considered him king of the south?…no in fact before he said it who gave a dam about who was king of da south was?

Atl_Boarder, you are really ignorant. And in this case ignorance is not bliss. How can you compare the singles that are on the radio to what the whole album is comprised of. Do you know that singles are meant for the mainstream just to get radio play. They are edited and condensed down to almost nothing. So they don’t represent the real sound and grittiness of the entire album. Therefore, the next time you decide to debate on something please do some kind of valid research.

I think most people don’t understand what TI means when he says he is the king of the south. He means anyone can be a king if they handling business, on top of their game, providing for their family, and giving back to their community. The only ones that get offended is people that underachieve and try to playa hate on others. So let me school everyone who the real king of the south is. Anybody that’s holding it down and representing where they from is the king of the south rather it be ‘face, UGK, 8ball and MJG,TI, Outkast,or Young Jeezy. Its a down south thang we all kings. TI is using the phrase to motivate and elevate the hip hop community. Big Ups to him.

T.I he’s one of the best rappers of the south but extremly over-rated, not 2 much competion in the south. KING cd weak, he has an average flow delivery, look he came out wit WAT U KNOW ABOUT DAT that’s cool whatever but he just doesn’t bring 2 much when it comes 2 lyrics. Chamillionaire flow is good but he can’t put music out like T.I. but niggas want 2 talke bout what’s hot now, I talk longevity and Luda is the KIng to all his peers whenever LUDA raps he says stuff u don’t even think of Georgia, look at Pimpin All Over THE WORLD was somethin different wit words rappers can’t even pronouced. Luda is on his way 2 bein a legend and now is on TOP becuz he’s actually over a rap group that consists of over 20 different people in disturbin THa Peace he came wit an album 2 help dem out 2 be A KING u got 2 work wit people and be on top of your group and helpin other rappers get started like Scarface did wit Luda

“I must plead ignorance to Jeezy. 3, his 3rd and 4th albums.” -Zilla
I don’t really agree with this on Jeezy, but otherwise, this man is tellin’ it how it is. And speaking of Luda, he’s really underrated. Yeah it’s true that half of the time he’s doing those “I’m a pimp” raps, but if you check his metaphors and wordplay on a lot of his other songs, you’ll see what I’m saying.

Lil Wayne,T.I., nor jeezy is king of the south because they havent challenged anyone for it…for east coast rappers going back as far as kool moe dee,if you called yourself the best or king you either battled until you got to the top or you went at somebody to take they spot. ti,hasnt done neither and therefore doesnt deserve the title, regardless of what people say the title needs to go to someone that has pyed a little more dues than ti like bun b or scarface or even outkast for that matter, people should think before making statements like youing buck is king,be serious

I listen 2 mostly east coast rap, little bit of west coast rap, and a bit of midwest rap(mostly rappers from Chicago or Detroit). I guess you could say T.I. the king of the south. He was the only rapper in the south that really claimed the throne. I didnt really hear any other southern rapper claim the throne. I only heard T.I.. So he definetly is the king of the south.

MAn all y’all is on fuckin crack, do yall listen to these artists mixtapes and the whole album….all of Jay-Z’s songs arent sick, but he is considered the best because of everything including progression and record sales as well as his flow, so here is the real list….
1.Outkast(They have a diamond record, nough said not to mention their lyrics)
2.Luda(sick ass lyrics plus the cred and versatility, and record sales)
3.UGK and Scarface tie b/c they about equal realistically
4.T.I(hes progressed listen to not only the albums but mixtapes, plus his sick flow-ASAP…and he is the King b/c no one has challenged him)
5.Lil Wayne(He may be young but has the experience and bottom line the absolute sickest flows out the south, listen to that dedication Vol. I and II-if you dont think so you are on drugs-hes the best lyricist in the south, why you think Jay-Z was backin him)……
Id keep going but the top five is all that matters in all truth, Young Jeezy would be next tho-Thug Motivation 101

first of all u da biggest fucking hata i ever seen in my life. when he say king he aint talkin about lyrics are record sales or anything of that sort. he’s referring to his success overall from hiphop to the big screen. i know niggas hate to see a southern nigga saying shit like dat but in his mind he is da kind and anybody that’s in any kind of profession that involves competition should be calling themselves the best if they expect to make. what yall want dude to say “I da second best to luda, he da king”. lil jeezy has come out with one album and half his style came from ti.i didnt hear no rappers talking about trap until ti. why u think so many old school artists fuck with him from ball and g, ugk, jay z, cause dat nigga is thorough. Why is it that east coast tend to hate any other regions. jus like in the late 80’s early 90’s whn west coast was introducng gangster rap. east coast hated on them. now the south is making noise, the east coast is heating again. u said gangsta rap ws to xplicit & uneccessary, now u think southrn rap is too commercial. true hip-hop startd there, but how do u expct a southern rapper to sound like r talk like an east rapper when he doesn’t come from where he comes from & wasnt raised as he was raised. some of it is, but thts mostly bcuz u can dance to it & it bangs in the clubs so it catches on. but for the record most southrn rap isnt commercl but thts wht media & major labels tend to promote. like in h-town, the screw sound is wht brght attention to houstn, but whn labels cme down, thy look at guys like mike jones & dnt sho any love to originl suc membr. guys like big poke, keke, c-note, 3-2, esg, r big moe. thse guys r more street, & thr raps express more of the way houstn is thn guys like mike jones but the commercializm is wht sells. if u wnna relly feel h-town cop thse ol skool albums frm suc alums: Ghetto Dreams (fat pat), dn’t mess wit tx(lil keke), hardest pit in the liter(bike pokey), city under siege(esg), city of syrup(big moe), all in yo face(pimp tyte). all relesed betwn 98-00, but none of these guys gt the big deals whn labels cme knockng.

Let me start off by saying Grillz was not a song from a “SOUTHERN” rapper southern artist featured on the track, but it was a MID-WEST artist who came up with the concept. BOL do ya fucking homework. As far as Tip not being a household name my nigga my momma even talk about Tip. His flow and his swagger make him that dude. Even Hov himself had to give my nig his props because off top he is a very intelligent artist. The way he put his words together is amazing. he may or may not be a battle cat,but lyrically he will disturb ya peace!!!Jeezy had a huge year and a huge record, but since then it’s just been featured appearences nothing dropped since Thug Motivation. Tip started with an nderground buzz then put out PSC Part 1 which featured a gang of ride to joints on there. For example Dope Boys and hell he even started off the album with a hard hitter telling you what he’s seen and or been through and he came out with I’m Serious with Beanie man letting you know oh my nigga I may be little, but I got big shoulders and I wil be here for a while. The first album people slept on, but then he came a little harder.Tip is very versatile and he does have that ability to cross over as far as Jeezy he just fine being a hood nigga on the block or moving snow that shit don’t last long as so will his career. Buck is my dame, but as far as KING no not even close he is a great artist, but he really hasn’t paid his dues to be compared to anybody great. But BOL u fuckin suck as a columist I’ll take your job http://www.myspace.com/zozo2 Holla at a real fucking reporter who states nothing but the facts!!!

It takes alot for me to like sumone over just an album but when I first heard the King album I was hooked on the lyrics and the beats. I mean this is a guy who has droped from a record label to creating his own. T.I. is the king of the south and him and alot of other rappers in the south is the reason why the southern movement is what it is today. To be the king you have to a sense of versatility in what you do. This guy is the star of his own movie and he is already working on a new one coming out early 07 so i’ve heard and he is also a CEO! Cliff can do anything he puts his mind in to.. And I can’t wait for the next album.

Im tired of all this comercial rap. I wanna here somebody rap about somethin important.

When T.I. came out and said he was the King of the south nobody (artists) stepped up and said nothing so he is the King no one wants to fight for it they know he speaks the truth. Like when LL cool J said he was the best rapperr everybody went after him.
Just give T.I. his Crown.
Alot of people know T.I. thats why he sold so many albums.

Speakin On Luda being underrated.
“but if you check his metaphors and wordplay on a lot of his other songs, you’ll see what I’m saying.”
That shit is too true. Luda is the number 1 Southern Rapper in my eyes. Dude got mad funny lines that you gotta listen out for and understand before a bit of a chuckle.

Why yall keep talkin bout stereotypical white people…shit im white and im all about hip hop, yall fuckin crazy who say snoop dogg wasnt a house hold name right away, i remember buying his “tape” yes i said tape! doggystyle when it came out it was the hottest shit in 6th grade that year..and just to mention that i came from a school district with nothing but white kids there. T.I. u gotta respect his shit, he talks real, no bs. there are plenty of good southern rappers too, but i also agree that the king of the south title must come with time, but for now jeezy, T.I., Luda are the ones doing the shit right now, andre 3k is off the hook and a lyrical genious no real hip hop fan will dispute that, im one of those so called wierd people that actually listen to lyrics instead of catchy-pop hooks or beats, lyricism is the root off all hip hop…to all u fucks gettin soldier boy gay on that shit yall dont know what hip hop ever was. thats my word.
