Speaking of mixtape rappers who are having a tough week, the situation with Saigon and Atlantic Records provides and interesting glimpse into the inner workings of the music biz.
You’ll recall that Saigon got all pissed and lashed out at his label the other day in a MySpace blog in which he threatened to leak his shit to the Internets himself if Atlantic doesn’t get around to putting his shit out tout de suite.
To wit:
Thank God artist such as Ray Charles and Aretha Franklin (Atlantic artist) weren’t signed in this day in time. They would’ve never seen the light of day. Not to worry though, my fans WILL hear my entire album very soon whether they put it out or not. If they don’t I will and let y’all be the judge of if the music is GREAT or not.
Um, yeah.
Delusions of grandeur much, Saigon? No but really, Just Blaze had him take down the MySpace blog. But, fortunately for us all, the editors here at XXL copied and pasted it into the headlines section here, for posterity.
And people say this site is controlled by the TIs!
Threatening to leak your own album to the Internets is probably not the best idea in the world, in the sense that once his shit does eventually leak to the Internets, everyone’s going to assume it was his fault. If anything, the label might leak it themselves and use it as an excuse to drop Saigon like a bad habit, not unlike what happened to Lil’ Flip. In fact, wasn’t that the same label? Hmm…
But, on the other hand, I suppose there could have been worse ways for Saigon to vent his frustration with the state of his career as of late. Like beating the shit out of his girlfriend with his car. At least in this case no girls got hurt!
At issue is the fact that Saigon has been signed to Atlantic for three years now and has yet to have an album released. Supposedly, the album was more or less finished six months into the deal, which means that it’s been sitting there gathering dust. But that might not be such a bad thing artistically, since Just Blaze hasn’t done anything that was really that good in about three years anyway.
As far as the album’s commercial prospects are concerned… I mean, let’s face it, there aren’t any. And I’m sure that’s why it’s been sitting on the shelf for so long. Even if the shit really was the next Illmatic, I doubt very many people would buy it. A lot of people really liked that Lupe Fiasco album, and that shit bricked harder than American Airlines Flight 11 slamming into the World Trade Center.
To his credit, Saigon himself claims to not give a shit how many copies his album sells one way or the other. According to an interview he gave another one of these hip-hop sites recently, he just wants people to hear his shit, since he spent so much time and effort working on it. If only the music business actually worked that way.

I’m not the biggest Saigon fan, but I heard some short snippets of several songs on hiphopdx.com
And the shit sounded incredible. Seriously.
The tracks are like music made during a lost era of east coast hiphop that never happened (think Jada’s “We Gon Make It” sound) because Blueprint dropped and changed the paradigm on HOW east coast hiphop sounded.
So yea, bol’s right. theres no way that shit is gonna sell.It didnt help that the first single was average and the video looked like a school project (and not even an “A” project at that).

Look, Saigon is a very rare artist nowadays. He’s a lyrical monster tranfused with a street poet with a reel rap sheet to back nup his rap sheets. Just Blaze is one of the best to ever touch the MPC and Kanye’s doin production too.
So if no one buys this Cd then that must mean that 95% percent of hip-hop consumer have no clue what their listening to when they hear the stories of the struggle in the projects. Maybe T-Pain makes wanna have a drink and kick it in the club.
While Saigon makes you wanna pull a weapon out of you’r trunk, write a mean 16 and shoot the first crooked cop you see while recitin you’r 16. Then end the scen with sum purp in a dutch. Hip-Hop has a totally synthetic life in Corporate America. R.I.P Saigon’s career is just another fallen soldier in the war for life in Hip-Hop.
Real emcees are like the Insurgents in Iraq fighting for their land while Corporate America is our armed forces turning their land into money. Thats why 99% percent of rap involves money makin lyrics. I mean shit, I gotta go to work and serve the holocaust of our nation right now (McDonalds) to make enough money to save for a car to burn gasoline to give Bush even more of a reason to send our troops out for a false cause. FUCK IT! FIRST FAGGOT! Saigon is that shit, realest we’ve gotten close to in a long time. Bol I hate your opinion but at least you consistent wid it. First, i think,

I feel him on the record label frustrations though. If they’re not gonna drop his album, then they need to just do each other a favor and drop him period. Cuz neither he nor Atlantic or generating money off his music now, what do they have to lose by letting him go?
Airing them out on myspace probably wasnt a good idea tho. Leaking your shit only works when nobody knows you leaked your shit (like Lil Waynes new joints, which are actually kind of weak…)

(no Iovine) is Atlantic’s priority for the summer and duke feeling are hurt. Dont Just got a beat on that new Tip album? It would figure that you could have managed to get a verse, since thats your producer, label mate and label. LOL! That Primo collab must gonna be charity, because Atlantic is not going to let their contracted artist release music without a cut, at least DJ Premier will get paid. Saigon, you have no midwest, west or south buzz, good thing you say its about the message (you aint no 2K Malcolm X, dude) and not money (liar), because the east consumers and the downloading internet superfans you counting on are not going to cut it. Unrecouped artists are prevalent, Atlantic gonna make you pay for that slick talk.

Because it costs alot of money to release an album (manufacturing, poster, commercials). And obviously, atlantic and interscope dont believe that they’re going to make that money back with sales. And they’re right.
As fucked up as it is, its much smarter for a label to not drop the album, use the artist as a tax write off for a couple years, and drop them when they have ZERO buzz (so nobody else can ever make money off them either).
Its the worst for hiphop when good albums get shelved but from a business perspective, i DEFINETLY see why the label would do it.

The subject of Saigon’s career aside, where’s your integrity as a writer? You can do better than that, can’t you? Is it a lack of inventiveness that prohibits you from writing coherently?
Don’t get it twisted - I’m certainly not talking censorship here. Lester Bangs, one of my favorite critics, wrote far more explicitly than you, without recalling the holocaust or slavery to make a completely unrelated point.
Food for thought.

Usually your a prick worth reading, but the Stacks (even though I never heard of him) article was opportunism at it’s finest.
Stack Bundles, we hardly knew ye
Not to sound offensive (on a hip-hop website, even!), but probably the best thing that can come of this morning’s murder of Byrd Gang rapper Stack Bundles is that it finally brings Cam’ron back off vacation.
I mean, at the very least I would imagine the media is going to want some sort of comment from Cam re: how great a rapper/bag handler Stack Bundles was, and whether or not the people who killed him are the same people who fucked his face up a few weeks ago. You know how the media loves to put one and two together.
The thing is, we haven’t heard from Cam at all since he put out his infamous “get my fucking pool in the back video” a few weeks ago. He seemed to sort of disappear after Tru Life kicked his ass outside of a nightclub as if he was Uncle Murder, and it was speculated (albeit by Cam rival Fiddy Cent) that he had gone into hiding, lest both of his eyes end up all swolen.
Now that a member of his crew has been gunned down in New York, I’m sure there’s gonna be speculation that the real reason Cam’ron has spent the past month or so working on his tan in the world’s shittiest timeshare is because he feared that had he remained in town, he would’ve met the same fate as Stack Bundles.
I’m not saying I know for certain whether or not that’s the case, but at the very least, I’d say there’s some issues that need to be cleared up. The NYPD may even want Cam to come in and explain Stack Bundles true role in Dipset as well as ID the perp, not unlike how Fat Joe had to do down in Florida recently.
Once all that is sorted out, you’d think this would be as good a time as any to get Cam’s recording career back on track. After all, last year, T.I. lost a very important member of his entourage (arguably even more so than DJ Drama) in a rather suspect incident, and he ended up having the best-selling rap album of the year.
According to the world’s most accurate encyclopedia, Courtesy Curtis is still set for release at the very beginning of July, around the same time 50 Cent’s similarly titled Curtis would’ve been released. But since Curtis has been pushed back to September, I wouldn’t be surprised if Cam’ron’s album is pushed back a bit as well. That would give him plenty of time to get his story straight re: Stack Bundles and getting jacked in the face, as well as benefit from whatever attendant publicity is generated.
I know, it sounds cynical to think about such things on the same day yet another rapper was gunned down in the streets, but look at it like this: If Stack Bundles’ death serves as the catalyst to get a new Cam’ron album in stores, then at least we could say his life served some puprose. Because honestly, I’m not sure if we could otherwise.

Sinistah aka Sin Piffcaso says:
I wanna see Saigon win this shit, despite the delay, he’s one of the few artists with material thats actually relevant and on pace to create if not change within the industry, change in peoples actual lives.
A song like “Pain In My Life” as it was executed is way more relevant and informally “touching” than lets say some bullshit like “Krispy” or “A Bay Bay”. And for the dumb who are gonna say “I dont like being preached to with music” it’s a story-based track, step ya comprehension game up.
If i wanted to escape reality i’d blaze somethin and drink like a fish til my auto-shutdown kicks in.
And personally i don’t buy records because millions of others buy it, i cop what i like regardless if it goes platinum or str8 wood-chip. I don’t buy music due to the label its on or industry co-signers.
I wish Saigon did have an album launch set-up. Sun is consistent and actually have way more skills than what has been forced upon us in da past few years for the most part.
I’m done i’m startin to sound like his street team, but real recognize real.
100!

Sai has a lot more hype than NaS did with Illmatic, and for the record Illmatic has gone platinum.
^^^^^^^^^^
You must be under 15 years old. The buzz for Nas pre-Illmatic was DEAFENING compared to Sai’s.
And with that it still took Illmatic almost TEN years to hit one million sold.

As much as I hate to agree with someone named “THATWHITEDUDE”, I couldnt agree with the above statement anymore.
What was so offensive about the post except the headline?? Seriously, what sentence in the post got everybody’s panties in a bunch?? The post was more about Cam than Stack.

Fat Joe - “Safe to Say” (2005)
Kanye West - “Touch the Sky” (2005)
Ghostface - “The Champ” (2006)
The Game - “Why You Hate The Game” (2006)
Jay-Z - “Oh My God” (2006)
Fabolous - “Return of the Hustle” (2007)
^^^^^^^^^^^^
I think you’re list is proof positive that bol’s statement was on the money. “Return of the Hustle” is a horrible example.
WHAT?! Name a beat in the last few years harder than “Safe to Say”! That beat is MONSTROUS! Oh, AND I forgot Game’s “Church for Thugs” and “No More Fun and Games” from The Documentary (2005). Now YOU’RE off your rocker! lol

B-Ease is right, Nas had the rap world in a frenzy, and witout the help of the internet, so imagine how much of an impact that mans debut caused in the rap game.
Every hip-hop journalists pen had an orgasm just to do a story on dat man. his album got the first flawless rating (5 mics) not only in the source, but probably ever, of course taking into consideration some pioneers may never get a chance to boast that due to being on the early end of Hip-Hops evolution.
