Time To Build

It’s the July 1st so everyone (even the casual sports fan) is talking LeBron James and the NBA free agent frenzy. Where is Bron going? Where will Dwyane Wade end up? Is Chris Bosh going to leave Toronto? At this point you’re probably thinking, “Where is he going with this? M#@thaF#ka this is a music site!” Well then let me get right to it. With all the talk being about free agency and building a franchise with the right players, I figured why not come up with a musical Dream Team of my own. Imagine every artist and executive in hip-hop/rap was free agent and you have the opportunity to build your own label from scratch through. What would you do? Who would you sign? Let’s first identify the main pieces that you need to have a successful label, and then we’ll get into my picks. — Rondell Conway

-President: The head honcho who runs the day to day, and oversees all the projects on the label. It’s best if your president isn’t an artist himself.

-Chief A&R: You need that person with an eye for talent; a person with the sensibilities to recognize the next star in music.

-Marquee Artist: This is your franchise player, the face of the label.

- The Young Upstart: This is the new artist that you must develop into a star. For this particular purpose, said artist can’t have already put out a debut album. So no Drake here, sorry.

-Group: A formidable group is good for label diversity and having one on your roster will test your ability to manage multiple egos.

- In-House Producer: The go-to beatsmith that will craft your label’s sound.

- Hip-hop Soul: Forget the Rappa Ternt Sanga, there is nothing that can beat a singer who can sang!

- The Veteran: A seasoned vet brings catalog and years of experience to your label. It’s smart to sign a rap vet that has been in the game over 20 years. Bridge that gap.

Okay with the ground rules set, here are the picks for my label.

President: Mark Pitts

Currently the President of Urban Music at Jive Records, Pitts has had a hand in molding some of the biggest stars in hip-hop and R&B ; most notably, the Notorious B.I.G, Usher, and Chris Brown. Given my rule not to hire an artist who is still actively focused on their solo career as an exec, Pitts makes sense here. He’s apt at building stars and keeps a low profile. So if an artist doesn’t want to compete with an exec that’s all up in their videos, this is the place to be.

Chief A&R: Sha Money XL

Again, I’m in favor of hiring folks on the exec side who keep a low profile, but get the job done. Sha is that guy. All around professional who knows how to handle talent, a good ear for beats, and is a team player.

Marquee Artist: Kanye West

Of course my natural instinct is to want to ink Jay-Z, 50 Cent, or Eminem, but I have to go with Mr. West here. While 50 in particular fits my personal preference for some street shit, my business objective is to find a top flight artist with music that reaches a board base of listeners, and who can take carry my label into the next decade. While the Big Three certainly are supernovas in the music biz, they all have peaked as performers; I believe that ’Ye still has room to grow into the place where Jay, Fif and Em are now. Plus the added incentive of him being a self-contained artist helps. No need to waste time or money searching for big name producers to work with Yeezy.

The Young Upstart: Nicki Minaj

Gotta go with Nicki here for two reasons (not those two, but they help). Every label needs that young fresh talent to keep the younger audience in engaged. With Nicki you get that and you also tap into music’s buying power, females. It’s a proven fact women buy music, so Nicki with the right project will have the ladies coming out to support her throngs. Roger that!

Group: Slaughterhouse

As you can see from my first two picks the label is looking a little light in the street shit. So to balance things out and boost the street cred, we’ll go with the fantastic foursome. Not only do Joe Budden, Joell Ortiz, Royce 5’9 and Crooked I bring lyricism to the table, they also cover several different regions. If nothing else these guys will keep things interesting.

In-House Producer: Boi-1Da

Keeping an in-house producer on deck is a proven formula for success. Cash Money had Manny Fresh, Death Row had Dr. Dre, and Bad Boy had the Hitmen. I’m digging pretty much everything Boi-1Da is doing right now, so I gotta peg him as my trackmaster of choice.

Hip-Hop Soul: Trey Songz

While I really want to choose my favorite crooner of all-time, R. Kelly or go with the better all round talent in Chris Brown, my lawyers are telling me its not worth it. So I’ll settle for an artist that’s got a little bit of what I like in both Kells and Brown. Pause!

The Veteran: Scarface

Every championship team needs that veteran voice and who better than Face. I know you southern cats were itching to say something, but I got ya’ll covered here.

So that’s my fantasy label. What’s yours?

    Marquee Artist: Lupe Fiasco

    Young Upstart: J.Cole

    Group: Tanya Morgan

In House Producer: me or Afta-1 (dude is dope, google him!)

Hip Hop Soul: Van Hunt or Dwele

Veteran: its between Bun B and Big Daddy Kane

  • QuinTessential

-President: ME, this is my vision and I personally want to make sure it’s done right.

-Chief A&R: DIDDY. He never puts anyone out but that’s okay because thats my job now. He has shown he can find talent plus he could still do the reality shows and keep our name out there.

-Marquee Artist: FABOLOUS. Versatile artist that has the lyricism for hip hop heads and the crossover appeal for the ladies. Can take you from the streets to club and everywhere in between. Young enough to still contribute at an elite level for a few more years, which is why he gets the nod over old heads like Jay and Em.

-The Young Upstart: FASHAWN. If I could rap at a high level, I would sound exactly like Fashawn. Bringing that ‘real life’ type of sound to the mainstream would be the mission of my label.

-Group: ATMOSPHERE. Difficult to go against slaughterhouse here, but I have to go with the crew from MN. Another low key group that is due for a push. This group has a different sound than the mainstream and Slug spits that ‘real life’ stuff that I like.

-In House Producer: KANYE WEST. I would love to hear anyone on my team get on a Kanye beat. Fashawn, Loso, Slug, all could rip that soulful sound with ease. In addition, Kanye comes with the bonus of being able to step from behind the boards himself and bless the mic.

-Hip Hop Soul: USHER. This would’ve been Chris Brown 2 years ago. Usher is safe, successful, he has the crossover appeal, and would fit in nicely with anyone in this line up. He is a bonafide megastar who would set the bar for our entire label.

The Veteran: OutKast. Now the dream team is complete! Outkast brings the music success as well as movie success. They can show my young guns how to make the most out of their opportunities and team up with anyone on the roster for some INCREDIBLE collabs over Kanye West beats. We’re ready for the takeover.

Diddy’s ego is the only problem I see here. A couple of these artist just need a bigger buzz and Diddy would find a way to at least get people out there. Maybe we’ll do a ‘making the label’ on MTV. If for some reason Loso, Atmosphere, and Fashawn all brick we can fall back on Usher, OutKast, and the beats (and rapping) of Kanye West to keep us afloat. We have a soulful sound that is all about that ‘real life’ type spitting. Bringing real hip hop that everyone says they want to the Billboard 100

-President: Sha Money XL – Knows talent and is about his business. Person of integrity, as evidenced by his still riding with the Unit when most others are wriring them off.
    -Chief A&R: Hip-Hop since 1978 – Yeezy. Nuff said.
-Marquee Artist: Tech N9ne – I was gonna put Em because he’s my favorite emcee, but Em is already a superstar. I wanted someone who is just as dope as Em, and who by all rights should be a superstar. Tecca Nina is crazy talented, super lyrical, has one of the dopest stage shows, and has controversy (his alleged devil worshipping), something all great artists can use to their advantage.
    - The Young Upstart: Cory Gunz – The young boy can spit. Point blank. Will eat 90% of the Freshman 10 alive. All years.
-Group: CRS – Until they come out and say it ain’t happening, they’re still a group in my eyes. And I get to have one of the illest wordsmiths ever (Lupe), and two of the illest producers (Pharrell and Ye) on my label. Win win win.
    - In-House Producer: DJ Quik – One of the greatest. Extremely versatile, for some reason underrated.
    - Hip-hop Soul: The Cali in me wants Nate Dogg, but my Marquee artist is Tech N9ne, so I gotta go with Krizz Kaliko. He and Tech make magic together, and he has crazy range. An ill rapper too. (If I could have another, I would choose Tony Sunshine)
    - The Veteran: Ice Cube – My first pick would’ve been Ra, but he takes so long between albums. Might as well go with another G.O.A.T. (IMO there’s more than one). Bun B would be a good fit as well, but he’s not quite at 20 in.

    • SansBeach

I co-sign this tech and krizz are really underrated and just as talented as anyone mentioned. Wish I had thought of them

  • nicholasdelorejo

President: Wacka Flocka’s mom. (I know ya’ll are going to shit on me for this but to be honest I actually tink she’s a very supportive manager as well as a go getter. She helped start the careers of Gucci and Nicki Minaj. Okay that doesn’t help my case but ask yourself if she can help jumpstart two critically panned artists imagine what she can do to an artist capable of producing their own buzz through music. At least I can expect her to ensure that an album will be released.

Cheif A&R: Akon (say what you want about dude being a singing rapper, dude managed to sign Lady Gaga who is probably THE BIGGEST NEW ARTIST IN RECENT YEARS. And labels were turning her down. So dude can recognize a profitable talent that others couldn’t.

Marque Artist: Either B.o.B. or Lupe Fiasco. I’d choose B.o.B because out of all of the past freshman from Kid Cudi, Asher Roth, Drake, and Wale dude seems like the only artist that actually has a career in the distant future. People are likely to get tired of Drake sooner than B.o.B. I’d choose Lupe because dude has a cult following him. Seriously dude has a mass of fans that are followers.

House Producer: Jim Jonsin. This guy may be roughly new but he’s produced “Lollipop”, Beyonc’e “Sweet Dreams”, Pretty Ricky’s “Your Body” and “Grind With Me” and Danity Kane’s “Show Stopper.” Either him or Danja considering he’s partly responsible for reviving Britney Spear’s career.

Group: N.E.R.D.I know some people would choose Slaughterhouse but considering how solo artists can’t sell records relying on the success of performances to produce profit, N.E.R.D. is the one group I can think of (other than The Roots) that can produce a show.

UPstart Artist: Janelle Monae. This chick is probably the most creative and talented artist to come in years. I know she just released her debut album on Bad Boy records but I can’t trust any artist in the hands of Diddy. She’s pretty much a refined female version of Andre 3000.

Hih-Hop Soul: Ne-yo. Dude can sing like Micheal Jackson.

Veteran: Big Boi. I would like to have Outkast but that doesn’t seem to be possible. After listening to some of the leaks from his new album, dude is not only a lyrical beast but is capable of making the innovative and psychedelic music outkast is known for.

President- Guess I’ll follow along and go with myself.

    Chief- Sha, no doubt.

Marquee Artist- Mr. West, undoubtedly one of the most talented men in hip hop. Love him or hate him, he knows how to put an album together.

Group- The Roots. They have an extremely loyal fanbase, anyone who has ever heard a Roots record knows they have the most pure sound in all of music. Not to mention Black Thought is the ultimate wild card, his guest appearances are always dope.

Young Upstart- J. Cole, better than Drake in my opinion, and surrounded by Kanye and the Roots theres no way he would let anyone down.

Producer- Ski Beatz. Love his soul style, he’s been around the block and has had a successful career that dates back to Jay’s Reasonable Doubt days.

Veteran- Common. Just look at all of my previous picks, it only makes sense to bring in one of the most passionate MC’s that is close friends with both Yeezy & The Roots crew.

    Pres: Lyor Cohen

A&R: Let me go old school, Dante Ross. Dude signed some of the innovative acts in Hip-Hop (De La Soul and Latifah to Tommy Boy, Pete Rock and CL Smooth, Brand Nubian, Leaders of the New School, Ol’ Dirty to Elektra.)

    Marquee Artist: Ludacris

    Young Upstart: J. Cole

Group: Slaughterhouse. If not them, The Clipse

Producer: As badly as I want to put Premo here, not everyone can really do a Work Of Mart justice so here’s a sleeper: Don Cannon. He bridges the gap between the southern sound and traditional east coast sound. What the hell, put Preme in there, too.

Hip-Hop Soul: Raphael Saadiq. Mad underappreciated, can hold it down as an artist and as a writer/producer.

    Veteran: Nas or Redman
