G.O.O.D. Music Day: Why It Won’t Happen

We all heard the news: in about two months Kanye West, Big Sean, KiD CuDi and Consequence will attempt to take over the music world for at least 24 hours with their planned “G.O.O.D. Music Day,” where each respective artists’ albums are set to drop. Sounds great, right? Four albums by four artists who belong to one of the most critically acclaimed stables out, all gearing up to drop. Separately. On the same day.

There are so many things wrong with that picture I don’t even know where to begin.

While not exactly original it is a pretty good publicity/promotional/”whatever rappers do to sell records nowadays” stunt to catch the public eye, and it is a great way to introduce more people to the youngest and most obscure of the bunch, Big Sean. It could also put Consequence back into a spotlight that’s dimmed for damn near everything he’s done since “Stressed Out.”

(That’s not a shot at all, and I actually like Consequence’s music. But let’s be real: a few notable singles here and there combined with selling less than 10,000 copies of your decade-late debut isn’t exactly “successful” in my eyes. But judging from what I heard off his upcoming long-player, I may have to taste my Dunks if by the grace of whatever colored Jesus is watching over him it sells.)

The planned album barrage could also prove, if successful, to critics that Kanye’s G.O.O.D. Music is more than just the typical vanity label most artists start when they taste a modicum of success, despite already having a couple of gold- and platinum-selling releases under it’s belt. At this point it’s usurped Roc-A-Fella’s crown since that company went to shit a few years ago. Go ahead and cop that Pilot Talk from Curren$y on the newly relaunched Roc-A-Fella Records, though. I guarantee you it’s doper than all of Memphis Bleek’s Roc-A-releases combined. But I’m straying from the point.

While G.O.O.D. Music Day sounds good on paper, I wouldn’t be surprised the plan falls through faster than the Mets after the All-Star Break and some, if not all, of the artists end up changing their own release date due to their album “not being finished,” “not having enough hype” or any other excuse rapsters use these days. Besides, most albums almost always leak roughly one week before their target drop date; meaning, while G.O.O.D. Music Day is scheduled to go down September 14th, F.R.E.E. Music Day is set to flood the e-waves around September 6th or so (guess which one I’m excited for more). Hardly anybody is going to buy all four albums, much less all four at the same time. Sure, Kanye and CuDi will do their numbers, but Consequence and Big Sean will likely be the low ballers in this go-round. If anything, I’d suggest that they package those two with Kanye and CuDi’s respective albums, or have all four packaged together as one “deluxe edition” deal.

G.O.O.D. Music Day sounds remarkable on paper, but my inner nihilist just believes it’s not going to be successful. Nelly may have found success when he released the equally shitty Sweat and Suit on the same day, but that was six years ago when people were still buying CDs and using Morpheus and WinMX to swack music. Now that virtually everything is digital, few folks will actually want to venture outside of their basements to purchase even one album. That can’t bode well for Kanye’s crew. Plus, I’m more gassed for Pusha T of Clipse dropping his solo mixtape that day than I am for Big Sean’s album, and Pusha’s is going to be free on purpose. Just saying.

the way i see it is, if your a true fan you will buy the cd for the artist your a fan of. so therefore i will be on itunes and buy Ye, Cudi, & bigs cd no matter what day they drop. G.O.O.D MUSIC IN THIS BITCH!!!

  • http://Pierzy11@gmail.com Pierzy

Musically, I love it but it’s not a smart business move and we know which of those two almost always wins.

People that are fans of one of these artists are probably fans of all (of course, Kanye is a huge star) but they won’t want to buy FOUR albums on the same day so they will cannibalize one another.

    Not happening.

  • Lowedwn

Plus the fact of the matter is if I got $25 to cop music on that day it leaves me with a choice of only getting 2 of the 4 albums which just isn’t a good look to force that on the consumer. I truthfully want to get them all but if this date satnds, its not gonna happen.

And people need to stop sleeping on that first Consequence album, that is a straight up soundtrack for the 9 to 5 working man such as myself, the up and coming lyricist or those trying to find the balance in doing both in their lives.

  • Hoes

Yeah as big of a fan as I am of all four, I don’t think its gonna happen. I definitely agree if it does happen though, that they should have them all packaged together in some deluxe edition type thing.

I actually think it would be pretty cool if they dropped one each week leading up to Kanye’s release. Like the first week Big Sean, then Cons, then Cudi, then Kanye. Then they would all get their shine, and it could be a whole month of G.O.O.D. Music.

    • http://streetscrack.com Hughes

I agree w/ this. They all would get their shine.

    • http://jamal7mile.blogspot.com Jamal7Mile

Yep, G.O.O.D. Music MONTH is what popped up in my mind as a better idea. And even that is pushing it. They’re gonna end up competing against each other, especially for that stupid “first week’s sales” thing that everyone seems to think is soooo important.

  • http://www.twitter.com/treeeezy Treeeezy

I wanna hear Big Sean’s CD. Pusha T raps like hes trying to hard. Plus T thinks hes the best but I thing hes far from it. But if it do happen Im gonna buy yeezy, cudi, & sean album.

    Ain’t. Gonna. Happen. Homie.

    But…

“I actually think it would be pretty cool if they dropped one each week leading up to Kanye’s release. Like the first week Big Sean, then Cons, then Cudi, then Kanye. Then they would all get their shine, and it could be a whole month of G.O.O.D. Music.”

^ this makes all the sense in the world from a marketing point of view.

    • http://jamal7mile.blogspot.com Jamal7Mile

Oops, you beat me to that co-sign, lol! $yk, whattupdoe!

  • Mikey 2 Point OH

If this happens numbers will go as follows

    Kanye: 1.1m
    Cude: 175,000
    Big Sean: 25,000
    Cons: 15-20,000

    not smart at all

    • @TheZensei

Kanye wont sell 1.1m…be real. Drake only sold like 800k and his album had a lot more hype than Ye’s new album.

      • http://champagne-n-reefer.blogspot.com Offthechart

Yeah but Drake leaked so far in advance that everyone who heard part of it knew it sucked so they didn’t pick it up.
Plus, Ye’s definitely got a more faithful following

  • http://j-mace.deviantart.com Shawty J

Yeah this is not going to work out very well. Kanye will out-shadow his good music artist, this idea is essentially setting them up to fail. The smarter idea would be to release the albums with at least a month in between. Honestly, Sean and Cons can get released on the same day because they won’t overshadow each other. But Kanye definitely, and Cudi probably need to drop separately.

  • http://streetscrack.com Hughes

Big Sean is one of my fav. rappers so I’m going to buy his album regardless. And I really expect Kanye x Cudi to sell major. Who’s Cons anyway? lol.

    • http://jamal7mile.blogspot.com Jamal7Mile

I first heard Consequence on the last A Tribe Called Quest album, late nineties. He’s been around for a bit.

  • H

Great call on Pilot Talk. It is a perfect summer time rap album.

  • ff1one@yahoo.com

good for music bad for buisness. u gotta satisfy the public throughout the year. unless, ye is planning on doing this and will drop more heat the next year then it would be good music and good marketing.

  • vento

you basically wasted 6 paragraphs by saying G.o.o.d. music day will “suck” because no one will buy 2 of the 4 albums.

I will be iTunes purchasing every cd except Cons…. I haven’t heard enough material from him and the stuff I have heard, although good, wasn’t great enough to make me a fan.

  • http://www.meetiquell.com iquell

You’re right! Sounds good on paper but it would be ultimately better for G.O.O.D music as far as sales to sell them on different days. And with one of my favorite rappers dropping a free mixtape (PUSH), that’ll def interfer with potential sales with the Cons and Sean. Either way I do hope all of them drop and do well, even though I’m not a Cudi fan.

  • http://hiphopsymposium.blogspot.com Rufus Smith

    Great post.
First of all their is no way they all drop on the same day. However, if they do, it won’t be on the expected due date.
Also, Curren$y’s album is incredible. Ski Beatz did his thing and the features were great. I was not a fan of Curren$y at all, until now. JayZ said “…Made HOV? ok, so make another HOV” Dame may be trying to between Curren$y and Jay Elect. Not saying they are close to JayZ but…yea (Jay Elect may be).
And on a side note I think you may be underestimating Big Sean’s hype. I think he will sell more than Cudi on his debut.

jesus was a brown man. dont front

  • JihaD

Didn’t RZA pull this off with “Wu-Tang X-Mas” or some shit like that? With GZA, Ghost, and Meth??? I remember three solo Wu projects dropping the same day, and they all sold well. The biggest issue with this is NONE of these guys have a song on the radio or being actively promoted, and the songs I have heard (Power and that shitty Kudi song) are, well mediocre at best. Cons has a better chance of getting his teeth fixed than ever dropping a soph album, and Big Sean is a waste of my time to even talk about. It is what it is, but unless Common decides to drop an album instead of one of the aforementioned artists, then its a waste.

  • swype-matic

Yea, great music move, bad business move. Luckily I’m only a fan of Kanye and Cons, cuz Cudi is overrated to me, and Big Sean sounds like a slightly more enthusiatic Drake, which isn’t sayin’ much. So at least MY choice is easier.

“Go ahead and cop that Pilot Talk from Curren$y on the newly relaunched Roc-A-Fella Records, though. I guarantee you it’s doper than all of Memphis Bleek’s Roc-A-releases combined.”

Hahahahahahaha!! That shit had me rollin’ cuz it’s probably true. [besides M.A.D.E.]

  • http://jayelaudio.com JayeL

Couldn’t part of this be the plan because Kanye doesn’t want to spend the marketing dollars to support 4 albums throughout the year? Probably be cheaper to push them all for one drop date. Then again, you know they wouldn’t promote Cons and Sean like the other two albums anyways.

As long as I can hear them all before the end of this year, I’ll be happy.

  • Anonymous

    I think it’s a good idea.

Big Sean and Con wont sell regardless. More GOOD music fans will be in the store for Cudi and Kanye and a small few will feel dedicated and get all 4. Better than Big Sean releasing on another day when people don’t even have a reason to be in the store.

  • http://www.youlovesomethingexplosive.com Fudopi

Well I can definitely see it happening, Kanye seems like he wants it to go down, and Kanye usually seems to be pretty serious about stuff like this. All four of them are pretty enthusiastic about it (refer to twitter) so if anything ruined it, it’d have to be the label… except kanye owns the label, I really don’t see what the problem with it actually happening could be.

Only thing is, if it does happen, I doubt it’ll be as big as the artists are hoping. These days, most kids download 2 or 3 songs from an artist and put them on there ipod, and that’s that. And then people who actually do listen to full albums usually just download the leaks… (be honest, we all do it sometimes). Now I’m a pretty big fan of all 4 artists, but 4 cd’s at $15 bucks a piece is kind of a lot of money to spend at once on cd’s… that’s more than half of my paycheck lol. So G.O.O.D. music week would be better for those of us who do still buy there CD’s, plus we’ll get more time to sit with each cd. I know if I had all 4 at once, I’d listen to em in the order of Kanye -> Sean -> Cudi -> Cons… And I’d just be listening to kanye/sean for weeks and cudi and cons would go to the back of my head for awhile. If they released them weekly I’d listen to each one equally.

And you guys keep giving Big Sean the little “you are the weakest link!” thing… but you’d be suprised how many little 15 year old kids listen to Big Sean while they wear the snapback hats they paid waaay to much for on ebay and the jordans their mom got them for their birthday. and their g-shocks they stole from the indian guy at the mall behind the counter.

    • Fudopi

      I meant G.O.O.D. month

    • swype-matic

This is propaby kinda petty, but more than likely Big Sean & Cons cd will be any where from 7.99 to 9.99 a piece, Big Sean cuz he’s a new artist, and Cons can this generation of listeners have short attention spans and can be fooled into thinkin’ he’s a new artist.

  • http://youlovesomethingexplosive.com Fudopi

    * I meant Good Music Month would be better.
