The MP3 Blogocaust

Google must not have gotten the memo re: MP3 blogs being good for artists and labels, because where else can you download music, except places where it costs money? (Perhaps if eskay had faxed over a copy. Zing!)

Because the other day, Google just up and removed several (kinda) popular MP3 blogs from the Internets. The blogs were all hosted by Blogger, which is owned by Google, and supposedly they’d all received several notices from some shit called the DMCA, which I guess is like the recording industry’s Internets intellectual property gestapo, and so Google was left with no other choice than to toss them in a pizza oven, to even further belabor a metaphor that’s misguided for a number of reasons.

Years and years worth of content… just gone. I can only imagine what it would be like, if I ran one of these blogs where the primary draw was someone else’s work, to which I may or may not have provided much in the way of added value, and it all just disappeared all of a sudden. I’d be shit out of luck. Granted, I’ve been informed by my father, who does my taxes, that I could probably make just as much/little if I quit blogging altogether and worked five days a week at the BGM, rather than two, but I’m not sure if my legs are strong enough for that, at this point. I might have to get some of those orthopedic shoes old guys and retarded kids wear. And lord knows I have a hard enough time procuring some stank for my hanglow as it is. The only class of woman I could ever get with happens to find footwear very important. As a matter of fact, Nike might want to have its design team look into coming up with a product specifically targeted at the first generation of people in this country dumb enough to spend $100 on a pair of tennis shoes that probably cost the same amount of money to make as a pair of shoes that cost $20. We’re not getting any younger.

But I digress.

The fucked up thing about it is that a lot of these blogs haven’t necessarily done anything illegal. Some of these MP3 blogs post artists’ entire albums, or sometimes even their entire discographies – and god bless them for it. Where else am I gonna go to download the Clipse’s Till the Casket Drops, when their dumbass publicist begs me to review it, if they’re not gonna send me a promo copy of it in the mail, or at least send me a link to where I can download it from Mediafire or some such? iTunes? I don’t have money to just throw away like that. But the irony is that a lot of these blogs where you can just download the entire album, in many cases without having to read some barely literate douchebag’s opinion on what it sounds like, have yet to be removed from the Internets. The ones that are being punished are the ones that played by the (admittedly rather arbitrary and retarded) rules – they only posted links to individual tracks, and they focused primarily on artists that aren’t as well known, who could use the exposure, if only to convince their parents they really are doing something with their lives. (“See, I was on I Rock Cleveland?”)

The MP3 Blogocaust, as I’ve coined it (on Twitter it’s known as #musicblogocide2k10), has actually put some of the poor bastards in the position of having to explain to the press the extent to which they’re not willing to offend their tall Israeli overlords. One guy pointed out how every noticed he’d ever received from the DMCA was for a song he’d been given permission to post. As if he’d ever post anything the TIs didn’t tell him to post. (Note that this guy wasn’t eskay, whose blog is run on WordPress.) Essentially, some guy from a label would send this blog an MP3 to post, the blog would post it, then someone else from the label would send a notice to Google that the blog had posted one of the label’s songs without permission. You’ll recall that something similar happened last year to the late, great Noz, where he’d get a cease and decist from Wonder Bros. for posting Gucci Mane songs someone else at Wonder Bros. had sent him. At least his shit wasn’t removed from the Internets. (Wait…) The thing is, Google has this BS policy where, if the DMCA files a complaint against your site, and the complaint is some ol’ bullshit, the burden is on you to file a counter complaint, or else they’ll just up and remove your shit from the Internets. And who in the fuck knows how to file a counter complaint, except lawyers and black single mothers whose livelihood depends on knowing how to pimp the system?

If only hoodrats were more interested in obscure music than in pictures of busted-looking celebrities.

” black single mothers whose livelihood depends on knowing how to pimp the system?”

Speaking of pimping the system…video on WorldStar of single black women going on Russian TV: YES, Russian, explaining how difficult it is to find a good black man. Its not enough that they’ve turned the American media against black men, now they’ve taken the hate international. How salty can a bitch get? Now you know.

    • The $ykotic Don Mac

I just finished watching that seal…I said the same exact thing, “How salty can a bitch get?”

    • nicholasdelorejo

And just how the fuck is going to a Russian Tv show is going to do about helping these black wome to find a good black man? Shit like this kills me. Let me get this straight: instead of demainding young black girls/women to promote and support the young black men who are working their asses off in a positive way so that other black men can be inspired to follow this rhetoric, these supposed successful black women would rather go to another country and complain about the “faults” of black men to another country as if that will lead to a benifiting result. These women (not all black women mind you) are worse than the rappers that make degrading videos. At least they don’t present themselves as experts the relations of black men and women. These women seem to bitch/moan about black men instead of rolling their sleves to help in correcting this dilemma that exists.

      • mousie

Oh, Black women turned the media against Black men… you learn something new everyday.

        • nicholasdelorejo

Black women didn’t turn the media agaisnt black men. All I’m saying is the stance that these black women are taking in this case is far worse than an ignorant rappers who pour crystal on video chicks. A rapper that does that is someone who’s presenting an idea that all black women are sexual vixens. However his credibility in presenting this is shit considereing the fact that chances are a lot of rappers have no higher form of education and have been came from a crimminal past. But when you have educated and successful black women who say that black men are shit, then their credibility is much higher than the rapper’s. Homeless people need a job a lot more than a regular joe but the employer will hire the regual joe. Why? because that employer believes that the regualr joe is a more reliable as a worker than a homeless person.

It’s not that black men haven’t turned the media agaisnt themselves. For too long portrayed the idea of black men as being hurtless crimminals whose life ambition is to uunfather a bunch of children, buy dental jewelery, and drag black women through shit. I’m just saying that this message is more amplified when black women (whether successful and unsuccessful) that subliminally show that there is an reward to this activity. Many times I’ve seen educated black women jam to an offensive song by Wayne, Jeezy, Gucci, or whatever degrating music with a catchy beat. I had a friend who told me to play some of that shit because he claimed that the “hoes would go crazy.” How many women out there willing to smuggle drugs for their boyfriends in jail as opposed to leaving those mutha fuckas in jail so they wouldn’t drag their girlfriends down with them? These are small compared to the shit black men do but you can’t say that they don’t create an approval effect to the minds of black men that continue to degrade women.

There are a lot of black men like Hill Harper who are trying to mentor black men into stray away from the traps that a lot of them suffer. My question is where are the mentor for black women? Who is the Sista Soulja for young ladies these years. I’m sure they’re out there but they never recieve as much of an oppertunity to speak as the black women who spend their time criticizing black men. Never do these women give advise to young women on how to handle this problem. Black women aren’t the problem here. But many black women who holds these conversations aren’t doing a good job in creating solution. Black women just like black men need to put these offensive men and women on their toes and not generalize all of the men or women as the problem.

        • The $ykotic Don Mac

How you doing? Hope all is well…

I love my women, but I wouldn’t go on Italian or Swedish TV to air out my laundry. I’d meet you in the laundry mat so we can do it together.

“Who is the Sista Soulja for young ladies these years? I’m sure they’re out there but they never receive as much of an opportunity to speak as the black women who spend their time criticizing black men”

          ^ fixed

He did drop a jewel up there.

  • sealsaa

^ That’s the power of denial. Pit an entire race of men against a black woman’s sense of self worth, and the result? We’re fucked up as a collective.

  • nicholasdelorejo

If there are any women reading this let me say that I’m not saying this problem does not exist. I’m just saying that holding these televised discussiona will not do anything. To me the best way for ladies to help out is to

1). Stop listening/supporting the music that is demeaning to you. I don’t want to hear no “I just listen to the beat,” excuses. If you like beats, listen to techno or dance music. If your concerned about the message of the songs them support the artists that hold you in a positive light like Talib or Common. If respectable rap seen as more profitable maybe you won’t get upset when you favortie rapper puts big titty latina girls in his video yet he claimed you were the “best [he] ever had.”

2)Make the choice between a pimp/gangsta or a gentleman. Stop giving these pseudo-thugged out protrayers any play unless you want the real thing. Many men tend to stray from whore-like chicks because guest what: those men don’t like pure whores or anything related to them. If you give these “thugs” the time of day, then you can be sure that men would compete with one-another in thuggery in order to appear more authentic than the next man.

And 3) Start going after the black women who do nothing but help support many black men in offending you or enabling those men to continue to not get their lives together. Instead of going after Nelly for the Tip Drill video, how about going after the 30-40 chicks that were featured in the video. Karren Stephans should have been pursecuted by those Spelman students the same way as they went after Russell Simmons and Common during the Hip-Hop Town Hall meeting. Criticize all participating members and not just the men.

I’m not saying that this is black women’s fault and black men don’t share the burden. But if you want change you have to work at it as well. Running to another country will do nothing but help promote the racist agenda of making other cultures view us as fucked up rather than fix the problem. Believe it or not ladies but you hold a lot of power over the fate of black men. And that power comes from what you expect and support from us not what qualities you lead us to believe yet dislike.
