Hookin’ Off On ‘Em
“Flashback Memories/two shots of Hennessy/street life etiquette, real niggas blend with me/I’m talking ‘bout ten a key/ Baltimore, Tennessee/I ain’t got to tell you how long I been a G.”
That’s the hook on the newly leaked Raekwon banger “Flashback Memories” featuring The Game. Now the lyrics are dope, both MCs go extra hard detailing their days scrambling in the streets. You know Rae is gonna give you that vivid HD vision verse and Game puts the rapper name checks on hold and pushes his skills into a new light. But it’s the hook that caught me after one listen. It actually goes with the song. They are reminiscing and flowing perfectly to the groove of a neo-80s TV cop drama show (I don’t know, that’s just what comes to mind for me, eh.).
It got me thinking about “what are the dopest hooks of all-time?” Not just the make you go crazy at the club joints like Soulja Boy’s “Turn My Swagg On”, but I’m talking about Nas’ “I Gave You Power” hook. Something that defines the rhyme, helps tell the story and catches your ear with melody and slickness.
I know Ja Rule, Nate Dogg and T-Pain are all mentioned when the singy type hooks come into play and they are great at what they do, but I want to know your all time favorite hook (or some dope ones that jump out at you) that speak to the verses at hand and that’s rapped. If you want extra credit then you can try and choose the dopest DJ Premier cut up hook or some singing shit, but it’s not mandatory.
Hit me with the hooks, but not you Shaq and Rza…y’all said that you didn’t need them. –DT
