J-Swift, Producer Behind Pharcyde’s “Passin Me By,” To Release Documentary On Crack Addiction “1 More Hit”

J-Swift is most commonly known as the architect behind the sound of The Pharcyde’s groundbreaking debut LP, Bizarre Ride II The Pharcyde (1992). What a lot of people don’t know is that in the years that followed, J-Swift suffered from a serious addiction to crack. Apparently, 1 More Hit was supposed to be an MTV reality television show which documented J-Swift being addicted to crack, and then his eventual rehab and return to rap. But the plug got pulled somewhere down the line, and now the documentary is being released independently.

Pretty crazy to me how when the royalty checks stop coming in, dudes be turning to the drugs like that. If you remember, Pharcyde member Fatlip also suffered from a cocaine addiction as well.

Real Talk. Not long after I first saw this trailer about 2 years ago,I saw this nigga on my way to work one morning at the 777 on LaBrea & Washington here in LA. I rolled up and saw this nigga and did a triple take. on the way out dude asked me for change. Being the Pharcyde head that I was I gave him a buck and kept pushin. the sad part is that when I came home from work 8 hours later dude was still at the same intersection!

I swear that life after the Pharcyde is way to real. Even with Mark Luv and Fat Lip. I see them niggas all the time and they dont look to happy. Shit, I know Mark Luv and that nigga is real angry. For like no reason. I dont know what the industry did to them niggas but I know that life after the Pharcyde is a bitch!

I remember the first time I heard Bizarre Ride. It was late 99′ and I was about 15. I had only heard like two songs of these cats b4 buying the record. Then I heard Oh Shit, and I caught the vapors! It got even crazier when I discovered Labcabincalifornia, and I started noticing that Mr. Yancey feller. God bless these dudes, and that’s no bullshit.

Garland did you write the piece in Mass Appeal two years back cause I read that one….it was the one with Clipse on the cover….nigga Swift sounded like music was his only hope and they took that from him when he tried to go to rehab. artist in general i’ve always felt have addictive personalities and I think controlled subtances become a part of the emotional package…..not every artist does it but people would be surprised whose on H or The Girl

  • HuzHe?!

I got into these guys freshman year in high school (92-93) Bizarre Ride messed my head up (like many) cause it was so different for that particular time. I heard ya mama a couple years before (mysteriously). J Swift in my opinion would be one to mention in debates of best producers of all time had crack not got him. That album, to me, sonically took you to another place, and there was some ground breaking shit out and coming out then. I would hate to be J Swift. I know he probably bangs his head everyday for what could have been.

Like many I was bothered by the change of sound on
labcabincalifornia. “Jay Dee?? come on! Who’s that?” Little did we know…

For real, for real. Same here–freshman year high school, ’92-93–the lyrics, the humor, their styles, and the MUSIC. They were groundbreaking. Them…Souls of Mischief/Hieroglyphics…Freestyle Fellowship/Project Blowed…the west coast was bringin’ serious heat around then.

Man the whole first album was classic, especially the production on there. So is J-Swift really on the streets now? Not making any music? Such talent put to waste smh.
