Is hip-hop a male genre?

So I ended up catching the hip-hop segment of that NBC Nightly News series on the state of black women in America called African-American Women: Where They Stand, and I figured a few of you fruits might be interested in hearing my views on it. From what I understand, this segment wasn’t part of the series that actually ran on the Nightly News, but was rather one of the bonus features that ran on the NBC website, which is where I saw it. Here’s a link to the video, in case you’re interested in seeing for yourself.

The segment consists of a panel discussion hosted by a woman named Mara Schiavocampo and featuring “Angry” Kevin Powell from the Real World and… um, activism; some broad named Kendra G, who’s supposedly a radio host; Irv Gotti from The INC, or whatever Murder Inc. is calling itself these days; and Melyssa Ford, from any number of rap videos and various other forms of soft pr0n-related media. Michael Eric Dyson and Karrine Steffans aka Superhead (though she’s not referred to as that here) are also featured, briefly, as talking heads, I guess because they’ve established themselves as the go-to figures when it comes to this issue. I’m so jealous.

Surprisingly, to me at least (because I’m racist like that), I thought Irv Gotti brought up some good points. Especially his very first point, which is that hip-hop is entertainment for men. If rap videos seem to feature nothing but women with ridonkulous cans and ridonkulous asses, that’s because that’s what a man wants to see when he turns on his TV – unless he’s Common or somebody. Kevin Powell countered that there was more of a balance in hip-hop between the years of 1985 and 1991, but I’m not even sure if I’m buying that argument. Yeah, there weren’t as many hoes in videos then as there are today, but that’s probably just because no one had realized there was a dollar to be made. And an absence of hoes isn’t really a balance per se, now is it? It’s just an absence of hoes.

Then of course they tried to make Irv Gotti look stupid (as if he needs any help), asking him a question about his daughter. For what it’s worth, Irv kinda set himself up by saying that he shows his videos with hoes in them to his daughter, who’s 15, to see if she thinks they’re hot. Honestly, I don’t see such a huge issue with that, but you know how mofos like to act all self-righteous. So one of the panelists asked Irv if he’d let somebody pour champagne on his daughter in a video, and of course Irv said no, which they all viewed as contradictory. But again, I’m not sure if I’m buying that line of reasoning. Of course you’re not gonna want to see your own daughter getting the Dame Dash treatment in a rap video, but you know what? You wouldn’t want to fuck your own daughter either. (Unless you live in Alabama.) Does that mean you shouldn’t fuck anyone else?

Finally, someone brought up the fact that there hasn’t been a really successful female rapper in ages (thank god!), and I thought this was a real missed opportunity. Michael Eric Dyson, speaking on this issue, referred to hip-hop as a male phenomenon, but I’d go him one further and state that hip-hop is a male artform, though I’m sure plenty of you would beg to differ. Which is not to say that women can’t rap, or shouldn’t, if they want to. A woman (or a man, for that matter) can *do* anything a man is willing to pay her money to do. But if you notice, most successful female rappers either play into male fantasies (Foxy Brown and Lil’ Kim 10 years ago), or basically pretend as if they were guys (Foxy Brown and Lil’ Kim today). I mean, think about it. Why would a guy be interested in listening to a girl who might shoot you or (try to) beat you up? It’s no wonder female rap sales are in the dumps. Girl rappers need to go back to looking good and talking about how they might blow you.

“Girl rappers need to go back to looking good and talking about how they might blow you”

    That shit is hysterical….

Female rappers are less appealing because there target audience of female rap fans (for the most part) are more concerned with the beat and hook. This is why Lil Mama is around…Also, this is true for the average male fan as well (soulja boy lovers….Ay Bay Bay) However, there is a large percentage of male fans that enjoy a lyrical artist who they can relate to…which is not a woman. I have never heard a remy song that I could relate to or worried about lip gloss poppin. Plus, female rapper suck…at least for the most part. I havent heard an impressive female rap verse since maybe the Fugees “the score” album.

Well then you’ve never heard Rah Digga’s solo album or anything by Jean Grae or Apani B. They go hard.

      • og bobby j

You right…I dont really fux with chick rap. I will give it some spins tho, plus I heard that Jean Grae shit is fire. I also heard some of that bitch vien, she runs with papoose. She can spit alittle…

“Of course you’re not gonna want to see your own daughter getting the Dame Dash treatment in a rap video, but you know what? You wouldn’t want to fuck your own daughter either.”

    LMAO! Priceless!

    • Josh

      That shit ain’t even funny.

      It’s a legit counter-argument.

People always want to use this whole “but wouldn’t it be different if it were your kid” or “if she’s a ho, your mama’s a ho” argument.

      But that misses the point.

If someone chick’s parents did a shitty job raising her and now she wants to blow some guy give some guy a private lap dance in the champagne room at Sue’s to make a quick buck, is that guy’s mom now a ho?

      Of course not.

      That’s flawed reasoning.

The bottom line is that I honestly believe that men and women should be treated equally.

Calling hip-hop videos sexist because they feature scantily clad women is in itself mysoginisic (SP?).

Those who do so are assuming that these women had no choice and were forced into this life of parading around half-naked for some 15-30something male’s enjoyment.

Video hos make some decent coin. Or at least they have the potential to make some decent coin.

      This is their choice.

These videos have casting calls. I’m sure most girls who were raised by half-way decent parents have no desire to be in these videos.

Or at least “Tip Drill”-esque videos vs. an “All Falls Down” type video.

Girls that want to get the Stacey Dash Treatment have plenty of opportunities to avoid the Dame Dash Treatment.

And those that opt for the Dame Dash Treatment, as fucked up as their childhood might have been, are making that choice and getting paid for it.

Some may even call that Female Empowerment.

If Heath Ledger wants to fuck some guy in the ass to get nominated for an Oscar, then fake-ass (literally) Angel can where a thong in a video to further career.

Hip-hop didn’t create hoism. It just gives these ho’s an opportunity to make money, and some self-respecting women too.

      • Cinsere

Yes…it’s very legit…but that’s what makes his choice of words so funny. I mean, honestly, that’s as bottom-line as it gets!

This is why rap needs Lauryn Hill back damnit. Her shit was fuckin bangin and no dude should have been ashamed to play that in the car. MC Lyte back in the day was legit as well, but she’s way past her time. I could see Hill comin back with hits.

  • Doobie

Lauryn Hill (before she lost her marbles) and even Jean Grae would rip the vast majority of male rappers’ asses (nullus?). Most female rappers suck for the same reason most male rappers suck (nullus?) now–most of the record buyers are idiots. The public’s insatiable demand for lowest common denominator product means that Lil Kim and Remy Ma will always have a place on many people’s play lists. And what the hell is Gotti talking about “male entertainment”? Females like that shit just as much as men do. The videos may be tailored for men but bitches love those songs about fucking hoes and bangin’ a bitch. The most illuminating moment on that awful BET hip-hop special was when Nelly said that people don’t give girls enough credit for knowing that when rappers talk about bitches and hoes, they aren’t talking about THEM, but rather the bitches immediately to their left and immediately to their right, and all the girls in the audience clapped as if to say, “see, now leave our niggaz alone and let em keep talking about these bitches”. The woman on the stage protested and she got all sorts of boos and hisses from the women in the audience.

“Yeah, there weren’t as many hoes in videos then as there are today, but that’s probably just because no one had realized there was a dollar to be made.”

Hip-hop was much better off before people realized that. You didn’t have a bunch of talentless assholes who don’t give a damn about it messing shit up for the rest of us. 2 Live Crew’s videos were great (I know the makers of Charmin’s revenue sharply increased upon the release of “Me So Horny”) but the standard hoes/cars/jewelry video formula is getting pretty old. Call me crazy, but I think it’s perfectly OK if my Rap music and my soft pr0n are largely separate.

Kendra G is a prominent morning show host on Chicago’s Power 92.3

She’s incredibly annoying, to say the least. As far as Hip Hop being a male dominated genre, well, nothings changed much since its creation.

The ABC segment ended on a note that would lead viewers with limited knowledge of contemporary hip hop to believe that sexism limits the possibilities of femcees “getting on.” A few of the panelists really disappointed me, b/c its a well known fact that there’s equal opportunity fuckery going on nowadays. Labels aren’t really looking to sign/get behind any rap artist thats actually spitting about something worthwhile, male or female. That leaves room for all these female rappers that rely on either sheer sexuality or this new age psuedo tough girl image Remy Ma’s been portraying nowadays. Male nor female Hip Hop fans really want to hear that shit, its actually pretty tired.

I gotta agree. Sad but true.

I thought about taking a shot and realized, I’d have no place. Lisa Loeb will never be rapper but could pen an ill verse.

Lets just put it this way, there is no room for “straight” female rappers. The last straight one lost her marbles.
