“Blue Magic” (Featuring Funkmaster Flex drops)

Inspiration 1:
Eric B and Rakim “My Melody”

Inspiration 2:
En Vogue “Hold On”

Inspiration 3:
Movie shit in intro seems to be from Mel Brooks’ Young Frankenstien. Wild like Gene Wilder.

    G.O.A.T.

  • Dom

FIRST!!wow that shit was nice. It seem like he was touchin his RD/Blueprint roots there. Lotta coke talk too.

  • FLIP

This nigga’s finished. Give it up.

  • Jake the Snake

Eh. I’m glad he’s not doing the whisper-flow anymore — that shit was downright lazy on Kingdom Come. Not that great, but at least it seems like he’s trying.

  • thoreauly77

featuring flex drops, as if that doesnt suck balls? and next week, featured artist, dj drama, yelling “dramatic!”

and, the entire kingdom come album = “been there, done that”. obviously this is a response to this perception, either that or it’s an old track. sounds like a track from after the “un” incident to me. what the fuck?

  • http://www.seanhills.com Big Hills

Damn Jay went back on this ish. Ish is Fire

  • JD3

Jay-Z with the 80s type flow is soso but not great. beat is ok, but not great. this track is straight but nothin special. its not getting me real excited about the album

  • http://dfdfdf.com S.CARTER

    HOV is backk

  • thoreauly77

this was a pharell produced throwaway from the blueprint era. it has to be. the content is vague which is why they are trying to give it to us as new product. bullshit i say. i don’t believe it.

  • Fickle Rap Nigga

    WEAKSAUCE.

weak lyrics + good production = average song

What is Jay-z is even talkin bout. This will fall way short of his 1st album

  • http://sdf asdf

real good. definitely a step up from kingdom come.

    hov carrying mad heat

  • phillysgreatest

    this is kinda weak.

  • sparky

    second!

  • Cuban Link

the flows just a little boring, but Im hoping the album is dope, Jigga wont go out with nothing less than a classic to officially end his career.I mean Kingdom Come prolly wouldve been the last, but it sucked so hes gotta kill it now

  • Roc the Trashman

    How disappointing……

  • TWC

    Oh firsts

  • LBDII

Id like it better without that FUNKMASTER FLEX bullshit. It’s good doesent seem like a lead single.

  • joseph

I’d much rather hear Clipse on this Neptunes beat.

  • Josh

wack – how dare he compare himself to Rakim circa 87

  • Josh

    Can’t wait for the movie.

    Album, not so much.

  • http://myspace.com/thamusicsnob MusicSnob

Not impressed with the beat, but overall the song is koo.

  • Randell

    Hovi’s home…

  • THE GHOST FACE

    WEAK!!!!

  • N.O. 4 life

its super lame unlyrical and boring.I hope its on his next album so it can get a extra smedium in xxl and his overating will be done wit so we can get back to rappers who have some type of connection with the listeners of this generation.

  • yo

    stop the hate it’s fire

  • Incilin

Sound quality is too poor to judge the beat. The rhymes are aite, but Jay doesn’t utilize his great rap voice and instead raps in a monotone flow which hurts the track. After one listen, it seems boring, but further listens are warranted.

  • t

    josh lame

for some reason, i didn’t expect much from the camel. and with this single, he proved me right. november 6th huh? can’t wait til the 13th!

  • Fire aka LOL Silencer

This song is nothing compared to old Jay Z classics, but this is far better than anything on Kingdom Come. Had some good lines in there.

  • YoungGun

This is what I’m talkin about. Hov brought that hungry flow. Everybody hatin because its Jay but this is bangin. Only if Flex wasn’t messin up the song

  • icee

im from da boot(louisiana) but i do like that 80′s style flow. jay z is one of only reasons i listen to east coast music.

    RIDE THE GOAT

  • Reelizm

Wow, what song did you guys listen to? Flow is smooth as ever, wordplay is tight, he sounds heated and hungry, and this is the nicest Neptunes track I’ve heard in a minute. If the rest of the album is on this level, he gets his spot back.

  • tseliot

agreed, thoreauly. “we don’t believe you. you need more people.”

  • http://myspace.com/radioblitz Radio B

YOU NIGGAS ARE HATERRRRRRRRRRRRRSSSS STOP IT!!!

U DUDES THAT’S SAYING THIS IS WACK HAVE TO BE 90′S BABY’S THAT DON’T EVEN UNERSTAND THAT HE TOOK IT BACK TO A ERA THAT YALL WOULDN’T EVEN EVEN KNOW ABOUT CUZ U WASNT BORN YET. AND THE FLOW WAS HIS WAY OF GIVING PROPS TO RAHKIM FOR CHANGING THE GAME TO WHAT IT IS. SO BEFOR YALL START TALKIN ABOUT MUSIC DO YA HOME WORK CUZ THE BILLY G.O.A.T JUST GAVE YALL A HISTORY LESSON

BY THE WAY THE EAST COAST IS BACK !!!!!!

  • Ocho Quattro

I agree that upon multiple listens it’s pretty nice, it grows on you

  • ri067953

Yo, this song is cool. I think Jay is better on other’s people shit though. He had fire on that T.I. joint and on the “Big Spender” shit with Freeway.

  • DirtDoggy

I don’t know if it’s the crazy money or the hot bitches the old legends got, but one of the two is definetly fucking they swag up, I mean I just don’t see how a billionaire can relate to street/low class kids that hip-hop started from, I mean they made it and their lives and families lives are set till the world blows up, but please if your not gonna bring hot shit that takes time and effort just drive around in your spaceship and fuck hot bitches, but don’t rap if your heart ain’t in it anymore, I always respected Jay but I think his time has come to set that mic down, the street is no longer in him, thats fine he made it, but I’m not feelin him anymore, that swag/style/flow/lyrics all came from the hunger he use to have, he done lost that shit it seems like.

  • Tyler

Jay Z . . Stay retired yo. .it’s a young southern countryboy’s game right about now big homie. Pharrel came off ‘dats about it.
    SolutionsGlobalMedia.com aka SGM7.com
Love it or Hate it, Tell a Friend.

  • kisha

get off his old shit and stop comparing. his new shit will never be his old shit … so love it or leave it but don’t compare it.
i’m feeling it. i guess if you don’t like old school or you not from that era then you won’t know nothing about it.

  • http://xxlmag.com shawn

another sub-par track from now a sub-par artist.

  • sk

    HEAT….

    that is all

  • Puerto Rock

All you 90′s babies can eat a dick!!! What the fuck is wrong with ya’ll, this shit is straight FIRE!!!! You ignorant bastards can’t appreciate what Hov did on this track and that’s pay respect to the architect of all these artists….Rakim the God. But I’m sure some dumb ass on here is gonna say Rakim is wack, washed up and not relevant but that would just show how little you fuckers understand or respect this hip hop game. Without Ra there would have never been B.I.G., Nas, Jay-Z, 50 Cent, etc…..think about that before you start trying to get your little internet thug on. Most of you ignorant bastards are the real reason that hip hop is in such a sad state cause you don’t respect the history of it.

  • sk

lmao..some of these comments kill me…some of you don’t have no talent but is saying this dude should give it up*blank stare* why ya’ll got some hot shit that ya’ll dropping..man just enjoy the best at this RAP shit ever you’ll all get it sooner or later ,later for alot of ya’ll

  • Stupid F—ks

Read his interview! You people are crazy you have to see the movie to understand what he’s doing. Hello he said he was inspired by the movie!!!

  • Purple Hulk

AINT NOONE TRYNA HEAR JAY Z THE FAGGOTS WACK ASS SHIT
STOP POSTING WACK SHIT AND LEARN TO READ AND WRITE, BITCH.

  • hovi hov

yo for real all you lil gay i mean lil wayne lovers need to respect the GOD MC for real… you young fucks all need to be put in a hole and blown to pieces cause all yall wanna do is snap your wack ass fingers and rock out like a gay ass rockstar… i am tired of all these wack ass southern artists puttin out trash and callin it hip hop… we need more jay-z’s and nas’s…. cause if that rockstar bullshit and that WACK ASS ay bay bay shit is the best yall got hip hop is in big trouble… but its really just these young stupid ass cats who think that shit is cool… you young fucks kill me with all that bullshit… but at least jay is back… ITS YA BOY!!!!!!!!!!! HOVA DA GOD!!!!!!!!!

  • R TO THE EZZZZY

Yo anything JAY spit about crack and money is ill. You haterz don’t listen you want some diddy bop Bow Wow rythmes then go buy Solja Boy. Maybe the flow will be more “exciting”. When he said, “I got to dumb down my audicnce to double my dough”, he was talking to you fools…

  • Damn

Damn Jay, you let us down with this one. Your A&R should be fired. Listen to Reasonable Doubt and Black Gangsta and then holla back at your public. We’re trying to give you love but we need that real. Wayne would smash you if this is your lead single.

  • TNT

Jay took it back to the old school… I’d rather hear this then most of the wack stuff that’s on the radio like Ay Bay Bay…

  • joseph

I’d much rather hear Clipse rap over this Neptunes beat.

  • Brooklyn

I wouldn’t expect lil kids to understand a 80′s concept. These comments just go over my head because I’m supposed to believe kids that listen to Jeezy and Lil Boosie and think they hot?! “I’m afraid of the future yall respect the one who got shot I respect the shooter.”

  • http://N.A chyea!

HUHHHHHHHHHHHH whoever said this song has no lyrics is an idiooooooooot…..more times all you know is basic english and u cannot comprehend what hes sayin… go to school and listen to your young joc ..faggot

  • phatam

this shit is not hot and the album has nothing to do with the movie he is trying to market this trash off the movie buzz i cant knock his hustle for trying make some quick millions from some of you suckers that cant wait to buy his album.

  • zenchiglow

Thi shit is so sad… It’s not even about coming up in the 80′s or 90′s period. Good music is good music and Blue Magic is mos definetly a step up from Kingdom Come which I’m sure any Jay-Z fan appreciates. All this negative feedback is unwarranted. Jay-Z on his worst day would body any of these southern cats (minus ‘Kast, face, and a few others) and their further degradation of hip-hop with a bar or two. Stop lying to yourselves.

  • Puerto Rock

Purple Hulk…..Ok, let me get this straight…you use that words “ain’t” and “tryna” and you have the fucking audacity to say people need to learn to read and write?! Oh, I’m sorry was audacity too big a word for you? Do I need to dumb myself down for you, like Jay-Z does for you ignorant bastards? You are a perfect example of why the future of this country is so fucked up. Little kids like you would rather spend their time trying to be internet gangsters than trying to pick up a book and actually learning something. Here’s a little bit of advice, before you telling others to learn how to read and write I suggest you pick up a dictionary yourself. Hell you might even learn something that will ensure that you won’t have to say “would you like fries with that?” for the rest of your life….

  • niggaracci

stop hating the GOAT…you young fucks don’t know your ass from a hole in the ground. Finally hip hop comes the fuck back….he should be number one on everybody list. Any Jay track is better than all the bullshit that comes out these days. Rewind that shit listen to the lyrics, the intracit rhyme flow, the juxtaposition shit kids the nigga on top of his game. Nov.6,2008 you mutherfuckers will be on the KING OF NEW YORK’s balls. so cocksuckers take one for your team.

  • David

I’m a huge Jay-Z fan but I’m not really feeling the song, not that it’s bad, it’s just not good. With all the hype surrounding this track and project the last couple of days I think Jay fans expected a little more, but Jay-Z is imfamous for putting out bland lead singles so I’m not that worried. By the way, to all the people dissing Kingdom Come, that was a really good “Grown” up album! Stop hating on it! I thought the only problem with that album was Jay had some rust and it showed because sometimes he sounded like he couldn’t catch with the beat and the other problem being the production and flow of the album was off, but the writing was great and very grown wich I appreciated. If your between 14 and 21 then I don’t expext you to understand alot of the things on that album, I wouldn’t either at those ages nor would I want to, but don’t diss it because you don’t understand a fuckin thing he’s saying.

  • REELIZM

Wow, what track did most of you guys listen to? Flow is smooth as ever, wordplay is tight, he sounds mean and hungry, and this is the nicest Neptunes beat I’ve heard in a minute. If the whole album is on this level, he gets his spot back. Remember when he announced that “Black Album” was going to be him going back to his pre-”Reasonable Doubt” state of mind — that album didn’t turn out that way, but this song delivers on that.

  • Mike

No, it’s not only those darn youngn’s that don’t like Jay’s new material. If anything, it’s the kids that only know the name and not the material that would think this is something fresh and above par. And no, this isn’t better than even HALF of what’s coming out currently. Jay is a legend, but that’s just how it goes folks.

  • OHNO

There’s never been a nigga this good for this long
This hood, or this pop, this hot, or this strong
With so many different flows there’s one for this song
The next one I switch up, this one will get bit up
These fucks, too lazy to make up shit, they crazy
They don’t, paint pictures, they just, trace me
You know what? Soon they forget where they plucked
they whole style from, they try to reverse the outcome
    I’m like – TOUGH!

  • pauljacob04

this song is just a teaser,it’s real oldschool with that swag that only jay could put on it. you have to listen to the lyrics, have we forgotten that hip hop is about lyrics. ol boy shatters any rapper with just a few lines of a song. can u name 3 rappers that are better than him, more succesful or more talented. NO. he is the GOAT. he has changed the game so much that u can only compare him to himself. How real is that. listen to the lyrics. the kingdom come album was not his best, but the lyrics are on point. he has nothing left to provemhe is just expressing himself. love it or leave it alone.

  • MZA

“This shit is straight crack!!!.. ya’ll lil niggas dont kno shit… ya favorite rapper looks up to hov… ya lil shits wouldn’t be bump’n NO lil homo( Wayne) if it wasn’t for JAY… nigga bottom line its a Rap HOV IS BACK”

Most people that are Weezy fans are also Hova fans..

the people upset with this track are Jay’s overly fickle fans, and the haters that always come out to shit on anything Jigga does.

The track is nice. It could be better. I’ll wait for a CDQ release.

  • BIZZLE

NO MATTER WHAT JAY IS THE BEST RAPPER ALIVE PERIOD. NOBODY CAN TOUCH HIM…THERE IS NO RAPPER OUT THAT CAN GO ALBUM FOR ALBUM WITH JAY…COMPARE JAYS CATALOG TO ANY RAPPER OUT AND JAY WINS HANDS DOWN. NONE OF THESE WACK SOUTHERN CLOWNS OR THESE FAKE NYC HOMO THUGS CAN’T EVEN HOLD JAYS MIC. FUCK YOUR RINGTONE SALES!

  • LowEndofDaChi

Jay is a legend, we all know that.

Still, that doesn’t take away from the fact that this track is underwhelming. I mean, I see what he was going for with the 80′s type steez, but this one will have to grow on the kid.

  • HollyHood

I’ve been fuckin wit Hov since the start, and this shit is dope!! It got a old school feel 2 it!! And jay was spittin that shit!! American gangster will go hard! Kingdom come was dope 2 I guess niggaz didn’t like it cuz it actually had substance 2 it!!

  • JayJay

Okay… i have listened to this 3 times now… im listening to it now… i can see how one wouldn’t like the song but i can also clearly see the reason why one would. And thats what concerns me. Hot shit is hot shit… wack shit is wack shit. Its easy to see whats what. However when you have a lukewarm response to the music thats the worst of all. People instantly forget you even exist. Now thats impossible for the best rapper alive but – he better wake up! In this time in hip hop you HAVE to connect with the listeners (no matter the ignorance which is rampant right now) I dont think he completely does that with the new audience. Of course im from a different era of hip hop so i can connect with this and of course im a hova fan so this song makes me happy to hear it. 8/10 for me

  • iVYLEAGUENEWYORK

THIS IS SUPER TRASH AND ALL OF YA’LL KNOW IT.

  • Unknown

It’s a narrative of the movie you dumb asses, You have to see the movie to see what he is talking about. The Movie takes place in the 70′s. You guy kill me first you said Kingdom Come was over ya head then he comes with the street flow and now he coming another way. You guys must really dig the new music to not hear lyrics been spit. Once the movie come then compare the cd to the movie. The begining and the end of the song is all from the movie Original Gangster. STUPIDS

I genearlly don’t respond to blogs. But, after hearing this song on the radio I was excited to hear the praise for it on xxl. However, I was dismayed to see a lot of negative comments.

Not considering the overly negative comments, which generally just suggest an obvious bias, it seems that many of those comments ignore a few key points of this song: first range. This is generally outside of anything Jay-Z has ever done. The fact that he has such a natural 80s style flow generated by someone who created for Hip Hop in the late 80s what Nas, Biggie and the Wu did in the early 90s, suggest the full range of his talent and the tools at his disposal.

Blue Magic also illuminates the current battle being waged by hip hop artists and audiences. As a collective, hip hop heads can be stubborn and refuse to allow into their pantheon of stars or even the marketplace of ideas the motives of dudes that fall outside of their comfort zones. Old schoold purists (that probably are more appreciative of what Jay is doing on this song) are in many instances probably quick to criticize the southern movement. Newer kids, the authors of many of these negative comments, see Jay’s attempts as stodgy. But the track is actually recommending that we accept both. That is, despite where Jay generally falls on the spectrum, he appreciates where he came from. Its variation from his original flow shows the diversity of the genre and that both can be great, that hip hop encompasses Rakim, Jay and Wayne at the same time.

To suggest that it sounds boring is sort of like suggesting the point while also ignoring it.

  • KLETEWOOD

I’m FEELING JAY’S TEMPO ON THIS TRACK.

IT REMINDS ME OF TOO SHORT WITH SOME INTELLEGANCE AND EAST COAST STYLE.

LISTEN TO THE TRACK AND CHECK JW’S LYRICS HE LACED.

    FIRE

Jay u did it again…u make it christmas in november thanks

It plan an simple Jay can remake a Whole cd with primo spiting fire and people will still hate. You can’t please everyone. Dudes out here don’t know what they want new Jay old Jay or Jay period. A lot don’t like his music because he can adapt to any era. He brought you hits mainstream, Now he bring it back to the dope game based on a movie propective and you hate. He is giving you a movie narrative the title name speaks for itself and kids hate. I am going to buy the cd and play it and listen to words making sense to the movie. That is like NAS, Mos, or anyone who makes sense to the beat. Every Jay albums is different if I want the same cd I would get Jeezy, 50 etc… every Jay CD is different it’s called evolving. You simple minded people. Just like how everyone hate Lupe when he is the hottest MC That is from the new generation of so called rapper. HATERS. GO GET HOVI NOV> 6

  • black jacobin

Got to give it up!!! his ability to paint pictures is elegent!! Those that dont know this song is formatted for the movie American Gangster… So now listen again and give it up!!!

  • South Ambassador

uhh ohh……..I feel the magic. Every year around the time when Jay drops you hear the hatred. Regardless of what you think of the song you know the album is gonna be crazy. I think the problem with jay now is that people wanna see him lose. Once the Patriots won so many rings we wanted to see them lose…then the Lakers, and let’s not forget the Bulls. All this hatin’ that yall are doing is just building more talk about the album which is gonna make people interested. Keep it up……and oh yeah, the track is bananas

  • Jason Murk

Blame Oliver North for Iran-Contra. You dudes who don’t know your history would not get that line. As well as blame Regan for what he do. Reganomics. The dude is giving you a history lesson. Oliver North was that dude in the government he was a D-Boy of another level. Hovi the GOD.

  • gnixs

I like Jay-Z alot, but he kinda dissapointed me with this one and Kingdom Come. I actually think the beat is kinda lame. Its real mellow and it goes nice with Jay’s flow. I think he should retire after this album unless he comes up with another “Dead Presidents” type of song.

  • Dr Flav

I cant listen to the song right now, but I predict the young protege GOAT, Lil Wayne rapin the instrumental. I would rock both versions though, because I been a fan of hiphop for over 25 years and I judge artists on their own merits, instead of dissin other artists and their regions to boost my favorite’s subpar attempts. What does Boosie, Jeezy or Soldier Boy have to do with Jay or this song? Oh yeah that pt guy above me sounds like a label rep or Pharrel, Bleek, JAY!!? LOL!

  • Dr Flav

N Cred that was a dope verse, the soothin throat lathers line kind of makes me uneasy though, Bruh’mayne. LOL!

All you 90’s babies can eat a dick!!!

I SECOND YALL NIGGAZ HATE CUZ HE TOOK IT BACK ON THIS TRACK, I LYKE THIS SHIT FUCK A HATER.IM A 90′S BABY BUT I STUDIED HOW NIGGAZ GOT DOWN IIN THE 80′S AND 90′S I KNO WHERE JAY IS COMING FROM PLUS THE ALBUM IS SUPPOSED TO BE INSPIRED BY THE MOVIE U DUMB FUCKS,GOOD JOB KEEP THAT SHIT UP,TAKE IT BACK ON THESE LAMES

Yo MAXWELL thanks. Yeah man, all I need is a booth and a mic. If you ever find out how to get that post it on here and I’m down. Here’s another 1.

    Oh Yeah I could flip
    a couple words
and get on to that money
    Since I was born
    late night my nickname
    been sonny,
    toothpick in the corner
    of my wisdom tooth
    my wisdom misused
while I chilled on my stoop
I gotta get up get out
    and get somethin
    and stop frontin,
    and accept to get bucks
    start buckin,
    The cat is too lyrical
    verbal myrical
    And never fall on my
    knees unless bein
    spiritual,
    I want the Nobel,
    For flowin so well
    for peace I’ll probably
    get signed on double XL,
    And i’m livin the life
    I got the soldiers
    Who like to pop
    so much they throw away
    the holsters,
    I mean cmon
    Its natural like Lebron
    supposed to be on
    the block but my word
is born like his handle is on
    point, so is my song
and my slam dunk lines lookin
    so dead wrong,

(Don’t Bite, Holla at me, What you think) Feelin Blue Magic. Its a hot radio joint. We’ll see what the real single turns out to be. 1.

  • jayon

what can i say but he getting it. but do we really need to know what he getting or how he getting it? keep yo dreams alive!

  • http://www.myspace.com/kinoc Anonymous again

Blue Magic is hot because Jay is talking like the hussler he is/was. Its almost like Denzel Washington is spittin. Jay is killin it wit the metaphors in a way that ONLY he could do. You can’t imitate the history and the phrases that he’s giving. Thats why its untouchable, timeless, and rare to hear this piece of history that is never written. I’m interested in this cross marketing scheme. “Can’t you tell that I came from the dope game”, Thats a hot line with the echoes and all.

  • http://cholleybrick.com Cholley Brick

I guess it happens to everyone eventually. Jordan, Ali, Jerry Rice. Eventually all the greats reach that point where they just can’t bring heat anymore. Looks like Jigga might be at that point. This shit is so uninspired. I get the whole homage to Rakim thing, but that shit might be cool for a deep album track, not for a fuckin’ lead single.

I’m an old school cat but to suggest that something is dope simply because it evokes a bygone era is dumb. Hot lyrics+hot flow+hot beat=hot joint. That equation ain’t changed in 30 years of this shit and it never will change. If even one of the three elements is not up to par, you don’t have a dope song, plain and simple. The lyrics on “Blue Magic” are okay but nowhere near classic Jay. The beat is boring as fuck and this flow just ain’t what Jay does.

I was just listening to “State of Grace” by Raekwon and thinking how dope it would have been if Jay had come with some shit along those lines instead of letting Pharrell fuck up his studio session like this. Oh well.

I ain’t too excited about this album. Hopefully the nigga proves me wrong.

  • http://hhfanatic.blogspot.com HHF

GOod lesson sir. I didnt like the track at 1st but I appreciated the concept. The track is growing on me now. Peace.

If yall dont like it, it costs you nothing, pay him no mind. Jay-z doesn’t even write songs anymore, he writes his name in the history books.

  • http://www.myspace.com/malotics DF

I wouldn’t buy it, or pump it on the radio. I also wouldn’t shut it off if it was on the radio or on TV. Es Caka.

  • fb

this retro take it back to the eighties shit is the very definition of bringing new york back.how else to bring back the city but with the very flow and topic that defined the city.

this shit proves the versatility that jay has always had and why he is the best.his uncanny ability to do it like any other great that came before and after

  • gh

you know lil wayne is somewhere now with a team of ghost writing spending the next three months writing lyrics to counter this on the next freestyle he does over a jay-z beat.
