Osiris Lives…

I’ll talk about something that is so major for me that I can’t believe it is going down here in New York City. This was already a pretty big summer for Hip-Hop here in the NYC with the 25th anniversary of the seminal movie ‘Wild Style’, but when you look at the landmark lineup being presented at the Rock The Bells concert it’s like the return of Hannibal to Carthage. It’s on some historic shit like that.

The concert is featuring Rage Against The Machine, Public Enemy, Rakim, Blackstar, The Roots and The Wu. Along with a shitload of other notable acts large and small, mainstream and independent. This is without question the greatest Hip-Hop event ever assembled in this city and it all goes down 10 minutes away from the birthplace of the art. It’s like 1977 all over again and this is the illest park jam evar.

The reason I am so misty eyed is because I can feel the spirit of Osiris on his way to the venue. The love for rap music and Hip-Hop will be borne in some people that are coming to the concert to experience a live show for the first time. This will be the work of rap music’s greatest ambassador, Ol’ Dirty Bastard. I believe that O.D.B. died in order to save rap music. His spirit is that generous and pure. It will be in his honor that the Wu performs as well as all the other acts. O.D.B. taught and touched everyone that will grace the stage. His spirit is that of pure expression. It’s not fraught with commercialism, or politics. It’s all about being who you are. This was O.D.B.’s gift to all of us.

How many of us are unafraid to be original despite what others will think of us? How many of us compromise our individuality to make money? If I could ever be a rapper I would want to be Big Baby Jesus. I would want to be that dude that never gave a fuck about shit because he knew that God was on his side. This is what I mean by being pure. Dirty wasn’t free from sin, but his soul was 100x greater than all of ours because he was for the children, the babies. I’m sure you have heard the story of Dirty helping the young girl that was hit by a car by carrying her to the hospital and visiting her daily until people realized who he was. That nigga was the fuckin’ truth. Fuck his lyrical ability or any of the songs he made. Just look at how he responded to a complete stranger that was in need.

I won’t pretend to be that selfless, and that is why I respect O.D.B. to the fullest. That’s also why I know this man’s spirit will come down and bless the event this weekend. Dirty was the most generous motherfucker in the rap music industry and he wouldn’t miss this chance to spread love amongst so many loving fans. So if you see me this weekend running around the concert venue with a cape tied around my neck and a mask on don’t fuck with me too much. I will be on my Osiris shit.
