Let’s See Them Blame Hip-Hop For This One…

Whenever some dumb shit happens in America the media is quick to find the racial element. That’s basically their job. And whenever some shit happens with Black people in the center of the controversy then you had best be sure Hip-Hop music will be blamed. The media accused rap music of influencing KKKramer Michael Richards tirade as well as that fossilized mummyfuck Don Imus’ outburst. The funny thing is that neither of those a-holes could even name a rapper if you asked them.

I’m just waiting to see how rap music is blamed for the massacre that took place at Virginia Tech especially since rap music is the last place you will hear someone talking about their experiences at college. Most rap artists don’t even complete high school. A few drop out even in elementary school. I can’t even remember the last rapper that stressed higher education as a worthwhile value. I sure that none of y’all would include Gym Class Heroes as a Hip-Hop group so that leaves us back at ground zero.

Why is it that Hip-Hop always takes it on the chin when Americans get out of pocket? No other music or art gets thrown under the bus as much as rap music does. Even rock music which bigs up drug abuse culture more than anything never gets shitted on in mainstream media outlets like Hip-Hop does. It’s as if American culture isn’t at the root of all the art that we experience. Before there was Hip-Hop culture there was hate in America. Before there was rap music there was rape in America. This country was founded on the religion fueled genocide of indigenous peoples. Am I lying here?

I can bet you a dime to a dollar that someone will try to equate the killings at Virginia Tech with the popularity of The Clipse. Those dudes are from Virginia Beach so there’s the connection already. Hip-Hop remains under siege no matter what happens in the real world. Is it because it’s artists are primarily Black and Brown peoples? If so then Black and Brown peoples need to get into Mozart and Beethoven. Let’s see some newscaster blame a mass murder on someone listening to too much Brahms.

  • DocZeus

Since when are the Clipse popular, their last album went plastic wood grain.

Are you kidding me? This is the most far out thing I’ve ever read.
Blame it on rap music? Your reasoning is poor and your examples are weak. You seem to forget that every school shooting that’s happened so far has been blamed on death metal.
Perhaps if this was gang related, you’d have a point. But usually when kids dressed in fatigues go on shooting sprees, its Marilyn Manson taking the abuse, not 50 Cent.

“I can’t even remember the last rapper that stressed higher education as a worthwhile value.”

Kweli almost, ALMOST, supports college. Oh, and what about those “School Was My Hustle” cats?

I like you Billy, so with all due respect you could’ve waited at least a day before you started pushing your agenda down our throats.

Its sad when people can’t even be sad for these kids families sake. Instead you just want to see who gets blamed for it. Thats fucked up.

If hip hop gets blamed for this Im gona shoot up The UCLA Campus.
    LMFAO!!!

I hear your tears 1P but if your heart bleeds that much then you aren’t much use to anyone since everyday some poor fuck gets swatted in America and in Iraq.

You should be over your moment of silence already and able to objectively decide who gets the blame for this clusterfuck.

I say we blame the Republicans.

  • M.Garvey

They have already started, the showed the 9mm followed by 50cent in The movie Get Rich or Die Trying, its already started man, get ready for a huge backlash, Oprah is on board (she doesnt do anything unless white people do it).
That said, screw Hip Hop its on life support, if you cant separate fact from fiction then you need to take basic english classes. Everything has there time and place (snap, commercial, conscious)but I’ll be dammed if this Minstrel Show is what defines me.

  • Being Ignant is Bliss

I was watching coverage of this tragedy on CNN, and they began talking about the 9mm (the killers weapon of choice. Then they started talking about how it is the weapon most mentioned and how it is glorified in hip-hop music and no joke, they cut to a random Curtis Jackson clip with him holding a piece up to some white kid from one of his cookie cutter gangster shit videos. Cause we all know hip-hop (especially Curtis Jackson) is responsible for what young asian-american wannabe engineers do when their girlfriend cheats on them and when they make a bad grade.

  • 1P

Well I uhhh can’t really argue with that…

  • http://yahoo.com Calmdown

33 people are dead and this is how you respect death?

I can see the media twisting the Michael Richards and Imus stories into a tirade against hip hop but you shouldn’t even start to say something about Virginia Tech because nothing about rap music has even materialized yet…

I mean it hasn’t even been 24 hour ours and you already are coming out swinging.

The real story : PEOPLE DIED.

Although it might be unfair to blame stupid shit on hip hop, people died Tuesday and you should respect that.

Death did not discriminate at Virginia Tech, there was no race factor.

Just show some respect and if your religious say a few prayers for the family of the departed.

Don’t be so quick to rush to judgement..

  • GATE13

They will try to blame anything on Hip Hop like they blamed anything on heavy metal in the 60s and 70s or whenever that was hapnin. Everything bad is blamed on hip hop but you dont see any of them supporting Snoops Youth Football League or Jay-z and his major involvement in getting clean water for villagers in afrika. Its just what makes their news.

As for what happened in virginia the worst thing is that people have to act suprised cos shit like that happens all tha time.

  • NoMamesBuey

Guillermo X. Domingo said “Even rock music which bigs up drug abuse culture more than anything never gets shitted on in mainstream media outlets like Hip-Hop does”

Preach Sunday. Many douchebag commentators in the media claim all rap is mysognyistic or violent because of Snoop Dogg or whoever.

    Total weak association fallacy.

I reply back if that’s the case, then
1 Marilyn Manson has crazy satanic lyrics

2 Manson & Norah Jones are both classified in the general “rock music” genre on http://www.allmusicguide.com/

3 I can’t support listening to any rock, including Norah Jones, since it’s all satanic.

When will more people stop believing in moronic association fallacies?

  • jacquez
  • Ghost

Its almost an inevitable conclusion it seems…but heavy metal seems to have been the scapegoat in the whole Columbine incident. I belive specifically Rammstein and Marilyn Manson. It is true that there is a load of violence proliferated in mainstream hip-hop, but it seems that those listeners were not really motivated to action, but more sublimate their needs perhaps by listening to such violent things. Em said the media pointed fingers at him after Columbine, I can’t explicitly remember that…I guess I’d be somewhat surprised if there is a hip-hop connection…

PS – Kanye West supports higher education…Oh wait…

  • The terminator

this crab just read tara’s article and stole it. This shit has been talked about too often. Alright we know hip hop should not get blamed. Thank you it is the millionth time I heard that shit.

Good post, those crackers will find some way to blame hip hop they always do even though it was an Asian that shot up the fuckin school. They wont stop until hip hop is illegal

  • thoreauly77

maybe the difference is that the rockers DO the drugs as opposed to selling them, and as has been pointed out have garnered their share of blame/criticism for drug use and violence (robin hood hill murders, anyone? free the memphis 3). for me, its difficult to defend hip-hop that proliferates the notion that it is okay to sell hard drugs, and in fact it is somehow cool or glamorous; the shit is just not right.

i just feel terrible for the victims and their families.. those poor people.

and i was actually thinking about that yesterday billy, how every day i turn on my computer and a headline reads “37 killed in iraqi marketplace” or some such. iraqi or american, it seems like all of this is just so pointless and tragic.

and co-sign on the republican party — those grand corruptors of the last of the greatest of all dreams.

  • Dipset

As far as whats too blame…

There is allot you can point fingers at. I’m going to say it right now… As much as I listen to lyrics and content in songs, I would say about 93% of the population that listens to rap doesn’t even know wtf the song is about or what the lyrics say!!

Most people listen to hip-hop for the beat. It’s sad but true. If were going to blame anything for fucking up kids minds than it should be video games!!

My little cousin which is 6 plays Grand Theft Auto 3 all day… he picks up prostitutes and kills people all day!

Now is it all the games fault?? Hell fuck no!! my aunt is a peice of shit mom who doesn’t give three shits about her son and lets him play all these games.

Plus growing up in the hood and seeing crazy shit all your life doesn’t help!!

    So to recap,

People don’t listen to lyrics enough to get brainwashed by hip-hop. Plus, parents need to control what there kids play with and listen too.

Don’t blame Hip-Hop, Blame the fucked up world we live in!!

    Ya dig?

  • J

YES, YOU MORONS, BTCHES AND HOS WERE AROUND BEFORE HIP HOP MUSIC. BUT NAME A SONG WHERE THEY SANG IT OVER AND OVER AGAIN. AND OVER AGAIN. AND OVER AGAIN. AND THEN RHYMED IT WITH SWITCHES AND VOGUES. IT IS MORONIC TO JUSTIFY THE UNEDUCATED NONSENCE COMING FROM RAPPERS TODAY. BUT THAT IS WHAT HAPPENDS WHEN YOU WORSHIP, I MEAN YOU, WORSHIP UNEDUCATED FOOLS. I WOULDN’T LET SOMEONE WHO DIDN’T GRADUATE FROM HIGHSCHOOL BABYSIT MY SISTER. AND WHY DIDN’T YOU IDIOTS GRADUATE?? AND I’M NOT TALKING ABOUT A PATHETIC GED. NOT CONFORMING TO THE SYSTEM?? TRY BEING TO LAZY TO STUDY SO YOU DROP OUT TO SELL REEFER, THEN SMOKE IT, THEN DREAM OF BEING A RAPPER, AND REPEAT. KILL YOURSELF.

  • Cherica

People need to stop blaming household appliances, pop culture & anything else
but themselves for their poor choices.

I don’t care how violent rap, rock, music & movies are, parents have the option of NOT allowing their children to watch/listen to things that may improperly influence their kids. If you ask me, if folks would stop pacifying & coddling their children, they’d have discipline and respect. They’d take their asses to school to learn instead of shooting each other.

  • http://xxlmag.com houston’s finest

R.I.P va tech students…….who knows, the killer might have lost his girlfriend or was failing out of school, we all have been there, but not to the point where we go on a shooting spree. this man reached his breaking point and exploded. you can’t, no matter what you do, can tell when someone is going to go crazy and shoot people up. it’s not video games or music. at that moment in time, they think what they are doing is right. it’s fucked up, but that’s what’s going on in his head.

  • http://almostaexpert.com missile 6

It is pretty amazing how every time something bad happens to black people they try to say that maybe its their own fault. The thing about the Imus thing is, its not really as much racial as it is sexist. If he would have made the statement in general terms instead of towards some innocent teenagers who are not supposed to subjected to this type of scrutiny, it may have turned out different.

Its funny how all these political figures, especially black are asking why Sharpton and Jesse aren’t chasing rappers in the same ways, but the people criticizing are not protesting either. You have a choice to buy a rappers music or not. Its lots of white people that make racist songs that are sold in stores, but know one mentions them.

What happened at VT was pretty bad. If it would have been a wannabe cool white boy or a black student they would be skimming through every CD they owned.

To paraphrase David Cross, in regards to hip hop being blamed for every act of violence in America…

“I’m sorry, what CDs was Hitler listening to when he started the Holocaust? What video games was he playing in Germany?”

The “concerned” right wing acts as if there were NO violence in the world before Kool Herc decided to steal power from the city, and distract the kids (living in the worst parts of the ghetto) from the horror of their everday lives.

By blaming forms of media, the actual social issues that cause violence, drug abuse, lack of education and overall poverty never have to actually be addressed.

The thing that gets me is that there are a lot of “street” rappers that have gone/are going to university: From Ice Cube & E-40 to Master P & Lil’ Wayne – not that they talk about it in their music though. They like to have you think that they were all hustlas & gangstas who blew up in the rap game – I mean, didn’t Master P study business & marketing way before he sold 75 million records with No Limit?

Its the shooter’s fault. Why dont you blame him, or his family, or his g/f, or w/e. I mean WTF?! Who else is there to blame and why do we always have to blame someone. These kids parents dont teach them how to adapt, they ride them too hard, they give them no emotional outlet, ect. Blame them, Better yet, blame the psycho fuck who pulled the trigger. It sickens me, its like there always has to be something that caused it. I’ll tell you what caused it, DUDE REACHED THE END OF HIS ROPE. Society, or w/e the fuck made this dude go psycho. Im sure there’s hiphop tracks about smoking you, maybe your homeboy, or your mom. Ive never heard a hiphop song talkin about “go to the college and bang out random people” thats more of a PANTERA TRACK! (Slauggghhhhtteeerrr… slaughter them all, slaughter them all- Those are the lyrics) Blame the white folks for this one IF ANYONE, hiphopers, black folk, ect. We dont do mass murder.
I just dont get why people arent allowed to just go crazy and kill a buncha people anymore, not there has to be a reason. Yeah, HES FUCKING INSANE! Hip-Hop aint do shit but provide entertainment and unheard cries of joy and pain to the masses.

first off, Hip-Hop dont control no gun-factories, no fuckin coke-fields, none of this bullshit some are forced to utilize as means of survival.

if they gonna blame hip-hop for this shit, go blame these gun manufacturers. How da fuck are to know if dude ain’t finish watchin some shit like Rambo or Commando on his I-Pod Nano and said “Fuck It”

Hip-Hop aint do dat shit, dude was a fuckin senior in college. shit my 2yrs was triumph enough where i come from, so it’s obvious the dude knows right from wrong and also knew the consequences of his actions.

Hip-Hop did it? from his lil departure note found in room, it seems more likely it was left as da last words to a peer or even college professor who was gonna fail him b4 son took going “postal” to new heights rather than rap music.

i think they already tried, i read a quote along the lines of the 9mm being the standard weapon promoted by hip-hop “criminals” (it’s paraphrased but might as well be the exact statement).

It’s fucked up when we as artists get blame for just giving a lil insight on what we go through first-hand or explain as an acculturated experience within our environments. As stated, we don’t make guns, we don’t grow coke, or even the outlets for them to get here, but yet we used as puppets of destruction who do what we gotta do just to keep food in our babies stomachs, clothes and shelter for our families and etc.

We use this Hip-Hop shit ya’ll try to call a fad since it’s existence to live via legit means. Just we speak of our past and the struggles and joy’s that was apart of it doesn’t mean we promote that bullshit to glorify it. If anything these lost ass fucks need to take it as a “word of advice” at the minimum.

If we speakin of this shit in our music, wouldn’t that turn on a lightbulb for these idiots in power to say “hey shits gettin crazy out there, we need to slow some of this shit down”. As Pac once said and still reigns true today “They got money for war, but can’t feed the poor”. Instead of funding the death of those overseas, why don’t they try funding the betterment of the current socio-economic state of 2day. Ain’t nothin change, you got the rich gettin richer, while everybody else fightin for crumbs.

Break Bread and stop blaiming music for everything fucked up that goes on, violent crime has always existed, it’s even in the Bible. Funny how we got racially-themed artists and groups making music worshipping the devil and all this otha shit, but yet Hip-Hop is the target of assination?

I saw cnn asking a radio hip hop dj, why it is o.k for hip hop artists to call women this names and it’s not o.k for imus. What The Fuck? What this fools don understand is that it wil never be o.k for a cracker to say bad things about another ethnic group, I for one considers such comments a call-out for beef between crackers & niggaz (i’m black). its true kkkramer can not name a rapper that said it is cool for white folks to be racist. I feel bad for the VA massacre, my condolesence to the fams of the dead. The white pop. should try to talk about their own problems and blame themselves for their own mess. peace billy!

This entire argument defending hip-hop is a crock of shit once you factor in the fact that De La Soul years ago addressed this type of shit with “Stakes is High”. While there are so many people running to the defense of hip-hop, a lot of you have conveniently forgotten that there are artists within the community that do not agree with what we see and hear in the mainstream right now. I agree that hip-hop ain’t the blame for all of society’s ills, but don’t sit up here and act like it hasn’t fucked up royally on SOME level. These are the stakes De La was referring to.

Yes, it is coming. White folks are living in a make believe fantasy world. They think there #2 don’t stink. But, you know they are going to blame us colored for what happened. This country should not have any peace if Iraq does not have any and any other place they have invaded illegally. The UN said that over 100,000 have died since the illegal invasion of Iraq, now they want to make a big deal about 32 at V Tech. It is a sad day when everybody in the world can’t enjoy peace. I am about world peace not just peace in the country I was born in.
