Y kant Tyrone read?

Why is it that black kids have such a hard time in school? It’s hardly a secret that black kids don’t do nearly as well in school as their white counterparts. The question is, why?

This past season of the Wire doesn’t deal with the achievement gap between black and white kids per se, but it does take place in and around the kind of shitty black school where there obviously isn’t a whole lot of achievement going on.

Five dollar tricks in the bathroom? Yep. Reading? Not so much.

The teachers are forced to teach from a state exam the kids have to pass lest the teachers end up losing their cushy government entitlement jobs, but I wonder if it’s the test itself that’s the issue.

If these kids weren’t already so dumb to begin with, the teachers wouldn’t have to spend so much time teaching them how to cheat. I mean, it’s not like these tests are rocket science. Am I right or am I right?

So I guess the question is: how the fuck did these kids get so dumb in the first place? White supremacist-types would suggest that black kids are just naturally that dumb, but I know this isn’t (entirely) true because I’m black and I’m a genius.

If a young Bol could do it, then why can’t the likes of Namond and Lil’ Mike and Dukie and the rest of these d-bags get it together? Is it a problem with the schools themselves, or the kids who attend the schools – and their crackhead parents?

Many would suggest that it has to do with schools in the ghetto being underfunded, but I’m not so sure if that’s true. In fact, spending per pupil is way more in shitty black school districts than it is in decent white school districts.

And teachers don’t make that much money, but they make way more than they’d make in a job commensurate with their actual ability. Indeed the few capable among them often leave the profession for higher paying jobs in the private sector.

My guess is that the achievement gap between black and white students is due primarily to cultural issues. With few exceptions, kids who grow up surrounded by a culture of failure are naturally going to grow up to be failures themselves.

Take for example the little crybaby Namond, who I’ll be using as an example yet again. Living at home with his materialistic lush of a mother he seemed destined to become yet another statistic and/or prison rape victim.

However, when he was forced to spend a weekend with Bunny Colvin and his wife (whom, it should be noted, knew a woman’s place in the home, i.e. next to the stove), Namond began to show signs of progress right away.

Coincidence? Probaby not.

Take home point: Kids like Namond and his peers can’t cut it education-wise because their ignorant-ass parents could care less whether or not they do well in school, not because they’re naturally dumb or because the school needs new computers or whatever.

Are you saying the problem is not the school…and by saying so your saying…black schools prepare students just as well as white schools do…

like i said in previous posts…they give us a spoon and give the whites a shovel…then ridicule us for not winning…

yes parents have some blame but not significant…yes they can drive home education…but when the parent cant afford to send the child to a decent school…or its out of their district…than the child is forced to deal with the public schools I like to call detention centers…

…as some of you know…Im from New Orleans…and we had some of the most ridiculus schools in the nation…IN THE NATION…the school board was corrupt and stealing the money that was meant to go to the schools…the teachers act like parole officers…and a majority of the teachers didn’t give a shit about the individual…they got paid and if you learned something you were lucky…

…thats why so many of the teenagers said fuck school all together…which was understandable because the shit was a joke…

…i believe in home schooling because you can learn what the schools teach and much more…

the school system is run by the same people who run the prison system…

I’ve been in teaching for the past eight years in one capacity or another, and let me tell you racism isn’t the reason Tyrone can’t read. The achievement gap exists because black parents don’t support/reinforce learning in the household. Instead they do silly ass shit like buy their 8th grader a side kick when he’s failing all his classes. There are a tremendous amount of resources to help black parents help their children succeed, so if black children are failing they have their parents to thank.

I wouldn’t say that it is meccesarily the parents fault but rather a culture that promotes failure. Kids in urban schools are ridiculed if they acheive- called “white” if they read/pursue intelligent endeavors. It’s like the chapter in Freakonomics about crack sales- you can make more money and not die working at the BGM but that is not nearly as romanticized/popularized by culture (whether it be media, music, or simply our peers).

The point of money being spent more on schools in the hood, your out of your fuckin mind, maybe per tax ecumalation per district or something. you think baltimore schools spend more then Orange County? you can find stats to saying anything.Never mind the Private school factor, the school is almost as much to blame as growing up around failures but that is a cycle that startts with a lack of opportunities(education).

I’ve been convinced all season that this 4th season is highly influenced by ‘Freakonomics’ which is a great fucking book that talks about doing a study exactly like the one Bunny colvin was doing. And also about how the school system is pushing people through the system and forcing schools to teach surface questions for tests as opposed to giving them an actual education.

The country has cut funding to schools, its a result of republicans in the office. just like the 80′s. crime rate plummetted in the 90′s and it was a result of democrats making sure that the poor weren’t left behind instead of just saying it.

Teachers are mainly there to review the information and give the student direction for their independent study. Eight classes at an hour a piece, if that; think about it. Most of the work is suppose to take place at home. Teachers where not hired to raise your children. You mothafuckas are killing me, it is this fucked up culture that has abandoned our kids to the system. It’s not magic, the more you study and or review the information the better you will retain the information. Simply doing your homework is not studying you dumb motherfuckas.

I was one of those kids that had a set of books at home and a set at school. Why? Because I would have gotten my ass beat if I was seen on the subway with books. Then when I was pushed to the white school it was none of that because the whole environment was set up for education. The schools, the homes, the stores gave discounts to the kids with good report cards, all that good shit. The parents where educated and professional so they wanted their children to be educated and professional as well. See we have a bunch of dumb ass parents trying to raise smart kids. It all goes back to the parents. If your kid is fucking up in school it’s your fault. If your children are slow you need to examine the problem and get them extra help at a learning center.

Niggas talk all this hustle shit and haven’t figured out how to hustle the American Education System.

Bol – we know that it a mixture of no parental involvement and lack of adequate school funding. Why are trying to put it all in one basket? Schools are funded by property taxes. Thats why schools in suburbs have better shit.

Nobody is “throwing money at the problem” like that – and if they are/ its not enough – we are talking billions of dollars to redesign schools – not only the facilities, but the quality of instructors, after-school programs, sports programs, administrators – you have these schools in communities where buildings are falling apart and crack heads are walking around – the whole shit should be re-vamped – suburb schools got pools and shit – s.a.t prep courses – low fat cafeteria food – come on man – separate but not equal -we know the kids need to step their game up/parents too but its not just one thing or the other.

Bol is on the money as usual.

First I got to thank God that my parents move out of the city to the burbs. Shoot, I was in the ‘burbs like that Boondocks cat.

The education was top notch for a public school system because I actually have the luxury of teacher that really gave a damn about my knowledge.

Learning was fun for me. I hate math which was funny because my Mom was a Math teacher. But I love English because it is powerful. Remember words can hurt when use methodically on an enemy.

Too bad they dont run the UNCF’s commerical anymore. A mind is a terrible thing to waste.

When you have both parents under the roof ~ you will turn out ok. When you just got the mom doing double duty. Props to all single moms, it is hard for them to juggle but they can do it.

But as far as education in the hood ~ why do they feel that the city schools owe them something.

Grant a child’s frustration is going start at home. Thus a seed is sown in the mind of the youngin who come to school and take it out on the teacher and peers.

I never met a smart criminal that stay out of jail. If you know of any let me know.

Bottom line ~ the LACK of a quality education is the biggest problem in the hood/projects.

Now if you want to talk about the Wire ~

Randy – a true hustler but he has no family other than his so called boys.

Nameiah (wee-bey’s boy) – He just doesnt have no heart to be a corner boy. Too soft but got his mind on other stuff. His character if you ask me – gotta be based on the real Carmelo Anthony. We gotta wait and see if bunny take his behind to basketball camp lol.

Dukey – A victim of his environment. I was like dang dude u too smart to be on the corner messing with computers and stuff. But I get into his downfall in a second.

Michael – Dang is this a classic Dr. Jekyll or Mr. Hyde syndrome? One minute he is nice and the next minute he is ruthless.

Donut- This kid aint into the drug game but is doing Grand Theft Auto. Got a knack for stealing sporty rides and go joyriding. If he have a good role model – this kid could open his own shop in bmore be an aftermarket specialist.

All these cats arent stupid but lack a father figure/a big brother to school them right.

As for Michael – he was force to be the Dad and I think he see Marlo as the Dad he never have. At first he resent Marlo but Marlo broke his hardness by offering him a carte blanche favorite. Man when Marlo order the hit on Bug’s Dad. Marlo own Michael. As yall would said OWNED!

The solution is to create more private school, mentorship and big brother/big sister opportunities in the hood. Also we should adopt more of peers when we are in a position to give another child a better life than being stuck in the system forever.

I am really not a big fan of 100 Black Men because if you ask me they are just a bunch of squares that act like a big fratenity for grown men of color.

But life is about choices. But when you dont know that you can do better then how you suppose to do better?

Them SAT arent no joke, i scored pretty well on reading did lousy on the math but it didnt matter because I was able to get into school for free.

Honestly I wish there were more Black business owners at the mall. How come we have people who cant even speak our language making money off of us and they dont even live where you live? There should be more Black business owners that own them jewerly shops/kiosks.

Be a honest businessman and good things happens to you and your business.

I don’t know if you know what a private school is, but it is a school that is not funded by the government but by the parents of the students. Who is going to pay for private schools in the hood off of minimum wage, then the schools would really be a wreck. The problem is that the politicians and decision makers kids go to schools that they pay for but not paying public school taxes and could give a fuck about public schools cause none of their kids are in there. The government needs to put money into the public schools like some of the private school has it, the rich got all the moneyt and the republicans set it up so that they ain’t gotta chip in.

Yo Marlon of course I know what a private school is.

It is private funded by the parents.

My concept would be based on a sliding scale and getting $$$ from foundations and wealthy folks.

Morehouse/Spelman and all those HBCU are a good example of a private school. But they should step their game up.

I have friends who went to private schools and they stated the education was good but the social life wasnt due to the hardcore nerds! lol

    Verse 1
Be be boys and girls listen up
You can be anything in the world
    In god we trust
An architect, doctor, maybe an actress
    But nothin’ comes easy
    It takes much practice
    Like I met a woman who’s becoming a star
    She was very beautiful
    Leaving people in awe
    Singing songs Lena Horn
    But the younger version
    Hung with the wrong person
Got her strung on that heroin
    Cocaine sniffing up drugs
    All in the nose
    Could a died so young
    Now looks ugly and old
    No fun
Cuz now when she reaches for hugs
    People hold they breathe
Cuz she smells of corrosion and death
    Watch the company you keep
    And the crowd you bring
Cuz they came to do drugs
    And you came to sing
So if your gonna be the best
    I’m gonna tell you how
Put your hands in the air
    And take the vow

    Chorus 4x

    Verse 2
Be be boys and girls listen again
This is for grown lookin’ girls
    Who’s only 10
    The ones who watch videos
    And do what they see
    As cute as can be
Up in the club with fake ID
Careful for you meet a man with HIV
    You can host a TV
    Like Oprah Winfrey
    Whatever you decide
    Be careful some men be
    Rapists, so act your age
    Don’t pretend to be
    Older than you are
    Give yourself time to grow
You thinkin he can give you wealth
    But so young boys
You can use a lot of help you know
You thinkin life’s all about smokin weed
    And ice
You don’t wanna be my age
    And can’t read and write
Beggin’ different women for a place to sleep at night
Smart boys turn to men and do whatever they wish
If you believe you can achieve it then say it like this

    Chorus 4x

    Verse 3
Be be for we came to this country
    We were kings and queens

or, for those of you who don’t like reading, a snippet:

*******”per-pupil expenditures. For example, Washington, DC spends $7,327 per students, but the drop-out rate exceeds 40%, and 72% of the city’s 4th graders tested below “basic proficiency” on the 1994 NAEP math and reading tests.

Kansas City, MO, spends $7,079 per student, but in one year (1993-1994) 14% of its high school students dropped out, and over a period of 4 years, 55% leave school. In the 1994 NAEP math and reading exams, over 60% of its students performed below “basic proficiency.” Yet the resulting clamor from those responsible, administrators, teachers and school boards, for such performance is usually for more money – not a reform of how that money is used.

Public schools should take lessons from private schools. Many private schools are delivering substantially more education for significantly less money than the public schools. Average private school tuition in 1993-1994 was $3,116 (compared to $6,600 for public school students). Other important spending data includes:

    * Private school tuition averaged $2,200 for elementary schools, $5,500 for secondary schools, and $4,200 for combined-level private schools, according to the most recent comparative figures available from the U.S. Department of Education (1993-1994).

    * Tuition for Catholic–parochial schools, the largest private school system, is even less. Elementary tuition averages $1,572 per year, and $3,699 at the secondary level for a total average tuition of $1,934. And for tuition that’s about half the average public school per-pupil cost, private schools expose their students to a more rigorous academic program and graduate a higher percentage of their students, than their public school counterparts.

Some critics claim that private schools can be more effective only because they are selective and attract top-notch students (the so-called creaming myth). The evidence proves otherwise. Urban Catholic schools, with demographic student profiles similar to their neighboring public schools, apply a more rigorous academic program and typically graduate 95% of their students, while traditional public schools graduate slightly more than half with weaker academic programs.” *********

    —-> the lesson, here?

personal, and by extension, community responsibility.

schools don’t get pregnant, people do. every one of these really ‘effed up cats has to go home sooner or later, and as a counselor/peer advisor/mentor, i’ve seen results of that every day. i can’t even count how many meals i’ve brought for kids that i used to see during the day who didn’t get a chance to eat at home. and here’s the kicker; i’ve seen it all over, regardless of race.

there are obviously exceptions in every case, some that “prove the rule,” and others that totally buck the system as we know it. still, i’ve had enough real-world, non-Wire experience to know that whether it was white river junction, vermont, or boston, mass., or philadelphia, pa., it’s the same shit; a fucked up parent’ll REALLY not make you wanna do too much of anything right.

i’ll hardly be as…risque w/the knowledge as young bocephus, whom i still think a lot of you young punks can learn from. also, as a black man, i will never, ever deny the social and cultural circumstances that precipitate our mere presence in ths country alone, let alone our problems. but still, this is the hand we’ve been delt.

WE’ve still gotta fix that shit. somehow, someway. for them babies sake.

i hate the fact that i came in so late but,

schools are a middle class institution and kids from poor backgrounds dont know how to act in those enviroments and poors kids dont usually know how to operate in those facilities so failure is the next option. also teachers get paid if students learn or not so its up to the students to make a actual attempt to adapt to those surroundings.

any logical thing you say is always bein’ followed by a dumb-ass excuse. Seriously, it’s almost 2007. How long are we gonna keep expectin’ schools to raise the kids and tell them how important it is to learn? And better yet, how much longer are we gonna blame them when alot of the parents ain’t doin’ shit? You’re absolutely right- a lot of schools in the hood don’t give a fuck whether the kids REALLY learn or not. We already KNOW this shit. So is that a reason for the parents to not give a fuck either? I feel for kids who have parents who don’t care- cause it’s already obvious the schools don’t.

It just looks like you’re makin’ it OK because “the schools ain’t on they job”. They BEEN not on their job- so where do we go from there? I had some lazy-ass teachers in one of my schools that just let us do whatever we wanted to do in class. But when I got home, my moms checked my shit and made sure I knew what the fuck I was doin’. If I failed, I got chastized for it. She didn’t say “damn, the school failed you, didn’t they? They’re the reason why you don’t do your work and ain’t learned shit, ain’t that right?” You might get that one or two teachers who really care about their students. Outside of that, the children and the parents also need to give a fuck. If they don’t, then it’s almost destined to be their fate to get passed all thru school bein’ dumb as shit and learning nothing.

And to the people just sayin’ “the wire” is just a show- you’re right, but there’s A LOT of truth to damn near everything I’ve seen on there, especially as it pertains to the kids.

Of course institutional racism is the cause. i addressed that rather eloquently (if i do say so myself) already.

This isnt about causes, this is about what those causes birthed and how we as a people need to achknowledge those things before we even think about moving forward. Instutionazlized racism is the main cause for our shitty shcool system, but not the main cause for shitty parents.that, my friend is due to a fucked up value system that we need to address.

  • jon jon–23

I think the problem is because we (blacks) are looked upon as the wretched race of the world and we readily accept that role. We are brainwashed on a regular basis and programmed on what we aspire to be. Look at our black rap artist: they rap about selling drugs, going to jail, and fucking everything that moves. As a result kids want to live like that, the artists themselves get richer by selling out their own race, and meanwhile the amount of blacks in prison (and special ed.) skyrocket; along with stds, black on black crime, and illegitimate kids. The main reason we are underachieving as a race is because of these ignorant, untrained kids having kids. If your mother is an untrained, uneducated, 15 year old welfare recipient how much can she teach you? Chances are her mother had her at a young age. It’s just a cycle and black people have become comfortable with underacheiving. I believe we are just as intelligent as any other race but we limit ourselves. If you don’t stress at an early age education to your child, chances are they will never gain an interest in gaining knowledge.

The fact is, kids like Namond are raised with different priorities and expectations. In suburban/middleclass/whitey households, kids are conditioned to think that doing well in school leads to careers which pay enough to buy a modicum of happiness. Kids are taught that all they have to do is make really good grades and they’ll become wealthy. They are also conditioned to see good grades as basically the only measure of achievement, and with “urban” youths this is just not the case very often, it seems. There is no denying that mainstream hip hop is a huge part of this fucked up set of priorities, but of course it all starts with the parents. Plenty of kids raised with certain expectations can still listen to hip hop and not become retards like say, Snoop, but because priorities are in such a fucked up state right now, hip-hop deserves a lot of the blame for doing nothing but perpetuating the problem. Most city kids with relatively “positive” goals want to be rappers or athletes, because their culture doesn’t value intellect or academics. If the black community in America is ever to progress, the kids will have to learn the importance of education, which is not just a cliche. I mean damn, black people in AFRICA aspire to be doctors and other prestigious things, and many look down upon the opportunities they feel American black people take for granted and ignore.

  • MarcusGarvey

Education and the income your parents make have a correlation. now its not always the case but you have a better chance of being Dick Parsons if your mom or dad is Phil and Vivian Banks. That said parents need to be held accountable. the school u go to as well makes a difference, people tend to embody there surroundings. Theres schools like KIPP, i think thats the acronym, that take kids out of the hoods and these kids go to harvard, yale, HCBC and graduate with a high %.

  • Shi

    accountibilty

First, I want to say that I’m an education reporter and I know all about what you are talking about. I do find your columns interesting, but I think you went about this particular subject in the wrong way. Yes, parents play a major role in their child’s education and should be held accountable (just like schools are) if their child fails.

You are right somewhat, when you talk about the black community. I don’t edcuation is valuedlike it should be. Not to down the black community, but it’s true in many cases.

The Wire shed light on what is really happening in some of our communities.

I can tell you first-hand that “teaching to the test,” which is what schools call it (what the school on The Wire was doing once it came down to the state test)does happen and in most cases it’s not because teachers think students are dumb or they are helping them cheat.

Most teachers who are worth anything will tell you they are against it.

If you have followed what is going on with education, you would know about the federal No Child Left Behind Act, which President Bush implemented once he took office.

I won’t go into detail about because I would be typing all night.

If you don’t know about it, check it out and you will see why they say teachers teach to the test.

Yes, there is no secret about the achievement gap, but the only way to fix it is for everyone (parents, teachers, the community and the student themselves) to work together.
We must learn how to value education instead of cars, money, sex and all things that glorified in today’s videos.

Don’t get me wrong, I listen to all kinds of music, but our values and morals in the black community is so twisted.

Anyway, I’m not going to bore you. Later.

  • a random educator from the Baltimore area

At first I thought you were just being a jackass, and I was right!!! Nevertheless, I aint mad!! You`re a columnist, so sacrcasm is a useful tool in your line of work. Otherwise, who would even take the time to even read half the horseshit you write!!!
However, you made a good point at the end of your horseshit article in terms appropriate parental involvement being a setback in the academic achievement of the some children. Nonetheless, you should consider doing a bit more research before you try to take on something that requires more thought than rap reviews( by the way stop eating out of Jim Jones asshole you fuckin` dick-riddin` piss boy).
Furthermore, you claimed that spending per pupil in “Shitty Black school districts is way more than that spent in decent white districts.”
IF you really believe that then I suggest you take a tour throughout the Baltimore City School District and then we can visit any surrounding “decent white” school district. You will notice a drastic difference in the money spent per pupil.

“I know this isn’t (entirely) true because I’m black and I’m a genius.”

I haven’t yet heard about peer pressure which is a big factor also. They have to make learning appealing with all these distractions that we have today. We live a materialistic world and the easy way to get money is much more appealing than going to school and earning your diploma.

    ————————————

Now brother Marlon i gotta disagree with you. My grant fundraiser theory is not naive.

If you read my other posting after that one ~ It not hard to raise money for a good thing.

Case in point ~ does anybody on here know how much money Oprah has given to Morehouse. That kind of money she has given would take care of a private school.

You may have a different solution ~ instead of saying my way is naive. Why not tell us your way.

I aint say public school aint shyt ~ shyt I got my education from one!

If the teachers were given NBA Contracts you can best believe cats would wanna be teacher when they grow up as oppose to drug dealers.

My thing is ~ I am not going to wait on the “man” when I am the man myself to create an opportunties.

As for the kids ~ it a shame that they are out of control. I didnt have to worry about getting shot at school. Man I rememeber I been in at least 3 fights. I done whup 2 ivory dude with my hands just because they made fun of my hearing aids. And the third one i fought with my mouth because he too made fun of my hearing aids and he done took my gurl but I step my game up and came out a winner.

The thing is lack of a quality education and role model who are good people like me and you are the reason for the downfall of kids in the hoods.

One dimensonal exposure is gonna limit a cat as oppose to a cat from the burbs who is exposure to everything.

Do an experiment ask the kid from the hood and from the burb and ask them who the President of Iran? What the stock value of Google? Do they own shares in Nike? Do they know the price of Gold and Silver?

And the thing about the internet you have information at the power of your fingertips.

I been trying to work on a proposal to create a program call”Laptops for the hood”. The problem is most cat dont have a high speed connection. So I am kinda stuck in that proposal stage. What I want to do is start in ATL and then hopefully run a nationwide program. So every kids in a high risk area has a brand new laptop and a high speed connection.

But there is a need for hi-tech rec center for the hood as an alternative to the boys and girls club and the ymca.

    just my 2 cents

  • Blaq Honey

I usually can kind of relate to your posts. But this shyt is based on no facts. Have you ever read FREAKONOMICS? Chapter 5 discusses this completely. And there are hundreds of studies based on FACTS and statistics that give reasons for this. For all your talk about being smart before you ask questions and give uneducated opinions, pick up a book! Reading is fundlemental.

The facts show it doesn’t matter if a black OR white child goes to a “bad” school (BAD does not mean bad teachers but “bad drugs in the hallway environment”) they have the same rate of success or failure. Color plays NO part in it. “ONE” of the problems is the distractions they have at school. When you have drugs in the hallways, NON-students walking around, who the hell can concentrate? That plays a larger part then color or parents.

Again research what you put out to the masses. Some stupid kid is going to use your blog as an actual “source citation” for a report one day and get an “F”.

    ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
lol…dude what the fuk are you talkin about

    ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

its funny, i said the same thing to you yesterday after one of your particulary asinine comments.

however, i can see how that post might have flown over your head

this is what im talking about, ill summarize

everything you’ve posted on this subject is the typical response on the subject. the things you are saying have some truth fundamentally.but, those truths were established and accepted by most of our people two generations ago.its time to make the next step

your only education about oppression seems to come from nas songs, so i took two of your points and showed that two other rappers have said the same stuff.so you can check those joints out instead of actually picking up a book or going out and doing something proactive.

n-cred- i am a parent and i will be goddamned if i let anyone besides me and her mother raise her. your points are meaningless soundbites that everyone has known to be true for so long that now when you say them it is fucking redundant. so, you suggest that it is not the parents responsibility to shape their children’s minds, yet simultaneously rail against the system that is set up for them to ultimately fail. oh, i see your rationale: let the system raise the kid. fucking genius! or wait, i left something out: you want to homeschool your children, yet it’s not the parents fault/responsibility to shape their minds! insightful to the point of omniscience! it seems as though god has granted you the magical ability to tell it like it is, while at the same time never having to analyse your own statements. how very convenient! how can you see what youre typing with your head so far up your ass?

any logical thing you say is always bein’ followed by a dumb-ass excuse. I feel for kids who have parents who don’t care- cause it’s already obvious the schools don’t.

these two are great.really read them though, you mite learn something.

  • J.O.S.E.(RAP IS LIKE WRESTLING)

    @everybody

just read this on another site.

    HOODLUM DISEASE
What began as a problem has developed into a disease?
All rappers from the hood have H.I.V.

    H.ood
    I.nfectious
    V.irus

Note: It can lead to AIDS if it’s not treated properly.

    Addiction (to)
    Incarceration (&)
    Death
    Syndrome

Hoodlum Disease is transmitted through unprotected social relationships. The disease doesn’t have any boundaries (social status, economic status, race, gender, geographic region).

The path that awaits young undereducated African-American men is more likely to lead them to prison than anywhere else.

Why are so many black women saying their mothers but can’t say they are wives?

Core Problems (Symptoms found in hoodlums)
    1) Power
    2) Domination
    3) Control
    4) Materialism

    Excuses
    1) “The street is a war zone.”
    2) “Keeping it real.”
    3) “We don’t bring the guns and drugs in our community.”
    4) “No respect (love) for the opposite sex.”

    Solve Problems (Cure)
    1) Education
    2) Parental involvement
    3) Eliminate risk factors (bad friends, bad environment)
    4) Good attitude
    5) Respecting your elders
    6) Legally and legitimately providing for your family.
    7) Setting a positive example for the young men and women who are currently looking up to you.

    Facts

    1) 1/3 black men between the ages of 20 and 29 years old is under correctional supervision or control.
    2) 70% of children in the black community are born out of wedlock.
    3) Fatherless homes lead to economic hardship for women and children.
    4) The U.S. has more black men (between the ages of 20 and 29) under the control of the nation’s criminal justice system than the total number in college.
    5) 1.46 million black men out of a total voting population of 10.4 million have lost their right to vote due to felony convictions.
    6) The high school graduate rate for African-Americans is 50%.
    7) 1/6 African-American children could read proficiently by 5th grade, while only 3% tested proficiency in math.
    8) National tests on educational progress showed that reading scores for black students at age 17 were about the same as those of white students at age 13.
    9) A higher percentage of white high school graduates had taken advanced chemistry, mathematics, biology, and physics compared to African-American high school students.
    10) 16% of African-American 12th graders are proficient readers.

Clearly, federal education regulations will not cure the troubles our African-American children face in schools today. Ultimately, we are responsible for educating our children, both individually and as a community. It is time for families to stop relying upon and expecting public school systems and governments to do all the work. The fact that the federal government designated minorities as “subgroups” in need of special attention shows that federal education standards have failed our African-American children. It is impossible for federal, state or local laws to repair every complaint with public education. Educating our children has to start at home. As mentors, professional African-Americans can tutor children in reading and writing. There are many programs available locally and statewide that are seeking volunteers. By donating our time, we can support our children in school and teach them about the Brown fighting spirit.

School is what you make of it, whether it be public, private boarding etc. And the parental responsibility is to prepare the children for a learning environment. Due to political circumstances or theiving school boards some schools get overlooked, better yet some school disricts get overlooked. My point is this I attended public and private schools throughout my academic career and there were some differences and some similarities.

Public school: 36 students- 1 teacher
Private school: 23 students- 2 teachers

    Public school: kids smoke weed
Private school: kids smoke weed and pop pills, cut themselves, etc.

Public school: old books with pages missing
private school: new books that they make you sign for(you break it you bought it)

Public school : some kids have bad home situations
    Private school: same thing

Public school: kids act out cause they want attention that they don’t get @ home
    Private school: same thing

    Just my take on things….

Bol: “My guess is that the achievement gap between black and white students is due primarily to cultural issues. With few exceptions, kids who grow up surrounded by a culture of failure are naturally going to grow up to be failures themselves.”

Why Bol the self-hating racist has a job: XXL Magazine is owned by a major publisher of hunting, fishing, and firearm magazines (you know, the white trash section at the newstand). A real hip-hop magazine wouldn’t let him near a column.

African-American culture is failure?!? Black Americans have fought from scratch to win every single right they have and have contributed an enormous amount to our society. Black Americans are anything but cultural failures.

The answer to your question is the cycle of poverty. The failures are the white American elites who don’t care enough to bother themselves with the problem.

I agree with the first part.but the second part exemplifies the precise reason why we’re stuck in that cycle. We’d rather complain and hope the elite whites finally become compassionate enough tho care. Not gonna happen. We may not have caused our situation but we are the ONLY ones that can get us out of it.Shit, those white elites arent failures, they’re succesess. They’re goal is to maintain a white power structure, and that’s what they do.

I agree, the legacy of our people in this country is one of the strongest in human history. but we’d be lying to ourselves if we said that that legacy is being carried out today. That culture of failure that bol is talking about is the culture that says doing good in school is “acting white” and “you either sell crack rocks or you got a wicked jump shot.” although seemingly birthed before or around the start of the crack era, this “i dont give a fuck mentality” is crippling us a people and we need to address it.

Interesting how the comments to this have played out.

I do not think Bol was saying African American culture is a failure, I think rather he was saying the culture in which most young African Americans grow up, the culture in their homes, is a failure. Materialistic, “I do not give a damn” parenting will breed people of the same nature, so to speak.

I see this in white neighborhoods too. Except we call those people “white trash.” These are rednecks who spend all their money on alcohol and their trucks, get into trouble all the time, and become the butt of jokes everywhere. The main difference between white trash and the people Bol is talking about is that white trash tend to live in trailers out in the country some place, where as the inner cities are the predominant home of the African Americans Bol is talking about.

Before I submit this I want to make an observation. Someone here said that the problem is that to be intelligent and such is considered “acting white” and therefor bad, and that this should not be so.

In white trash neighborhoods, I’ve noticed the same thing. If you are intelligent or good in school, you are looked down upon and people will say “you think you’re better than me, because you got grades?”

So just as its considered bad to be intelligent in some black neighborhoods because you are “acting white,” being intelligent is considered bad in white trash neighborhoods because you are “acting like you are better than everyone else.”

Same problem, different words to deal with it, and different races. The only thing held in common would be economic status: both groups are generally living well below the national average income.

Someone else here mentioned the money schools receive, and that in many inner city neighborhoods they might receive plenty of funding. White trash people also tend to go to well funded schools: they live in an area generally where they are in the same school district as a wealthy suburb, so white trash tend to go to the same schools as wealthier students.
