Today, April 5, is the 45th birthday of Grammy Award-winning producer, rapper and fashion designer Pharrell Williams. Pharrell is a true creative in every sense of the word. Dabbling in all art forms and mediums, the Liberian-American artist has made a career out of unapologetically going against the norm.

Born and raised in Virginia Beach, Pharrell got his start in the music business by forming a band with his friend Chad Hugo. Pharrell plays the keyboard and drums while Hugo plays the sax. Soon, the duo would find themselves in the recording studio where they came to be known as the producer duo The Neptunes. When Pharrell and Chad met rap duo The Clipse in 1993, the four worked so well together, they crafted a new, futuristic sound for the South. The Neptunes have produced for everyone from NORE, Ol' Dirty Bastard and Jay-Z to SWV, Kelis, Beenie Man and The Backstreet Boys.

Aside from production, Williams, Hugo and Shae Hayley formed the band N*E*R*D in 1999. The funk-infused hip-hop trio gave us hits like "Lapdance," "Spaz" and "Everyone Nose (All the Girls Standing in the Line for the Bathroom)" and have dropped five albums to date, the most successful being 2004's Fly or Die.

In 2012, Williams founded his own label called i am OTHER as an umbrella company for not only music but also for his additional business endeavors in fashion and technology. The "Happy" rapper is responsible for brands like Billionaire Boys Club and Ice Cream, has a partnership with Adidas and was recently named co-owner of G-Star Raw. Pharrell also shares his thoughts on music, fashion and the business behind it all with his weekly radio show on Beats 1, OTHERtone.

The year 2017 saw Skateboard P and his wife welcome triplets, then close the year out with a new album from N*E*R*D, No_One Ever Really Dies. This year has seen him drop a collab with Migos, and continuing to create apparel through his deal with Adidas.

Happy Birthday, Pharrell!
