After Chance the Rapper took to Chicago’s City Hall to publicly endorse mayoral hopeful Amara Enyia last week (Oct. 16), Kanye West has since stepped up to donate to her campaign. Recently, Enyia announced she had just $67.54 in her campaign bank account and was facing tens of thousands of dollars in fines from the Illinois State Board of Elections.

According to the Chicago Tribune, West’s generous donation is the exact amount in fines the mayoral candidate was facing, stemming from her brief 2015 campaign run for mayor. Apparently, she never closed her campaign account after dropping her previous mayoral bid, and is being fined for not submitting quarterly campaign finance reports on the account. Thanks to the rapper’s donation, she was able to pay the penalties in full and can move forward with her current bid.

In a statement, Enyia’s campaign spokesperson thanked West for his “generous action,” confirming the donation was accepted.

“The Amara Enyia campaign thanks Chicago native, Kanye West, for his generous action,” the statement reads. “Amara’s campaign is energizing people around the city with bold ideas and solutions that move Chicago forward. We are excited to engage people of all walks of life as we focus our efforts on getting on the ballot.”

West’s decision to step up and donate to the cause has some Chicago natives puzzled, factoring in his blatant and outspoken praise for President Donald Trump and the Republican party. On the contrary of what West has previously vocalized support for, Enyia is running a progressive campaign, reportedly calling for a more transparent government, an equal education system and a fairer economy in Chicago.

“I want to work with somebody that’s about change," Chance said, speaking on why he is endorsing Enyia and plans to co-campaign alongside her. "Somebody that’s about our community. Somebody that’s about equity. Somebody that’s about fairness. And the one person in my research of this wide-open race [whose] views align with me would obviously be candidate Amara Enyia.”

Current Chicago mayor Rahm Emanuel has chosen not to run for a third term, something that Chance has been vocal about celebrating. Chicago’s election for its next mayor will take place on February 26, 2019.
