Create Music Group, which specializes in collecting revenue for artists, has officially launched a publishing division for the company, and in a big move, they've made the controversial 6ix9ine their first official signing. Speaking with Billboard yesterday (Sept. 11), CEO Jonathan Strauss explains their reasoning for the move and their belief in the Brooklyn artist.

"6ix9ine has changed the music landscape," says Strauss. "He is breaking boundaries like no one else and is without a doubt the most exciting new artist of the year. We are looking forward to working with him and his team for many years to come."

The signing of Tekashi is yet another power move for CMG, which Billboard says increased their revenue by $14 million between 2016 and 2017. Similarly, 6ix9ine has seen his popularity explode since dropping off his breakout single, "Gummo" last year. His most recent hit single, the Nicki Minaj Murda Beatz-assisted "FeFe," has been a Billboard Hot 100 mainstay since dropping a couple months ago.

While this could be good news for Tekashi, the rapper is currently in some legal hot water. A little more than a week ago, he wrote a letter requesting a judge to give him probation instead of jail time for a sexual misconduct case he caught back in 2015. He could be looking at jail time if a judge doesn't rule in his favor.
