DeJ Loaf and Leon Bridges Get “Liberated” in New Video
DeJ Loaf, rapper, singer and former XXL Freshman, has showed her versatility over the years, trying a multitude of sounds and excelling at them all. Today, her new track, "Liberated" featuring soul singer Leon Bridges, is here, along with its accompanying video.
The Calmatic-directed footage features various members of the LGBTQ+ community and Black people (and intersections of both) sharing their experiences of what liberation means to them. The scene then cuts to a pastor preaching, then DeJ Loaf in a hair salon. As she gets dolled up, she eventually meets up with Leon Bridges.
The lyrics of the song are about accepting people for who they are, from all walks of life. DeJ's opening lines touch on women's freedom to look how they want. "This for the girls that don't need no makeup when they wake up/For the ones who rockin' lace fronts, you know, I ain't gon' say none," she raps. "Hashtag and you're single, you fresh off the break-up/For the introverts, no, we don't gotta say much.
Leon Bridges also gets a verse of his own, and he does a great job with it. Above all, Leon is an advocate for being yourself: "Fight back for so long, baby, break on outta your chains/You don't have to aim to please or be a certain way."
"Liberated" will appear on DeJ's forthcoming debut album. Today, she is offering to pay for couple's marriage licenses in New York City, to coincide with the release of the new single. Earlier this year, she took the stage at Coachella, and also freed the song "Big Ole Boss" in late 2017.
