The Weeknd Recorded and Got Rid of an Entire Happy Album Before Releasing ‘My Dear Melancholy’

The Weeknd's latest project, My Dear Melancholy, has been labeled by many as a breakup album but according to the "Call Out My Name" singer, before the release of the EP, he had an entire happy album recorded that was eventually scrapped.

That announcement came during a rare interview with the Canadian crooner for Time Magazine, which he is on the cover of this month. It's the first interview he's done since 2016.

While My Dear Melancholy was released following The Weeknd's split from Selena Gomez, the singer says the project recorded before that was more upbeat and beautiful. "Prior to Melancholy, I had a whole album written, done, which wasn’t melancholy at all because it was a different time in my life," he told Time.

“It was very upbeat—it was beautiful," he added. But according to the singer, he got rid of the album because that stage of his life was over. "I don't want to perform something that I don't feel," he said. As for the project ever seeing the light of day, The Weeknd says fans will "never" hear it.

In related Weeknd news, the singer was recently spotted with ex-girlfriend Bella Hadid during the Cannes Film Festival in Cannes, France on May 11. In footage obtained by People, Abel could be seen locking lips with the model at a Magnum x Alexander Wang afterparty. Although the two have not confirmed if they're back together, during his interview with Time, The Weeknd said he was "without a doubt" single.

The Weeknd's My Dear Melancholy EP earned the artist his third No. 1 album on the Billboard 200. The record racked up 169,000 equivalent album units following its March 30 release, becoming the biggest week for an R&B album in over a year.
