It's officially The Weeknd SZN. The Canadian crooner put out his My Dear Melancholy, project nearly two weeks ago and has been swiftly releasing visual material off the project. Today (April 9), we get a video short titled "He Was Never There" that shows behind-the-scenes footage from the making of the project.

The spliced together footage is directed by Joachim Johnson, edited by Dylan Coughran and produced by Rebecca Hearn. The six-minute visual shows Abel in the studio at different times in the recording process.

"It's exciting to me that this shit is coming out so quick," a voice says over the footage. "It never, as far as us being like, 'Hey, we are doing this thing,' it's just been like a week and a half."

He adds, "To me its really like cultivating what's in Abel's head."

In one shot, there's grainy footage of The Weeknd singing into a mic while partly covered by a hanging red sheet. In other scenes, he just stares intently while listening to the playback. Other random shots are thrown in, adding to the strange feel of the visual.

Though put out on very short notice, My Dear Melancholy, was streamed over 26 million times on its release date. It currently sits atop the Billboard 200 chart.

The project was put out with great timing. The Weeknd will be headlining the 2018 Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival this weekend.
