Joey Badass Thinks President Trump Isn’t the Only Reason for America’s Problems
Joey Bada$$ made it a point criticize President Trump on his All Amerikkkan Bada$$ album, but now he's wishing he hadn't. In a new interview with U.K.-based publication, The Evening Standard, the Brooklyn rapper says that even though he feels President Trump is problematic, he also thinks he himself narrowed what should be a much wider-ranging conversation regarding systemic injustices.
“Yes, there’s a fucking popularized douchebag in the office right now but he’s only making these problems worse, he’s not the reason for the problems," says Joey, who's spoken out about the controversial president outside of his album as well.
He continues, "Like, we had these problems with Obama. Stop thinking Donald Trump is the only problem. Like, he’s one of the many problems. I wish I didn’t even fucking say his name on [All Amerikkan Bada$$] because in every interview people are asking me about him, and I don’t give a fuck about him.”
Elsewhere in the interview, Joey rejects the notion that he's a "political rapper," even though he acknowledges that things he's seen in his time in the U.S. have definitely shaped the content of his music.
"There’s levels to it. At the very microcosmic level, I’m a black man in the US and I’m describing my problems," Joey explains. "That is the very lowest level of my album. But once you raise it up, I’m a human being in the world and I’m speaking for oppressed people in the world."
