Playboi Carti’s “Magnolia” Goes Platinum

2017 XXL Freshman Playboi Carti is now a platinum-selling artist. On Tuesday (Aug. 1), Pierre Bourne, who produced Carti's "Magnolia" and a good deal of his debut project, uploaded an Instagram post announcing the track had officially earned platinum status. A rep from Universal Music Groups confirms the news to XXL.

Bourne's Instagram post includes a video of Carti laughing and smiling uncontrollably as he celebrates his accomplishment. Bourne's caption for the vid references Kid Cudi's hit, "Pursuit of Happiness" to make a point about having a shiny platinum plaque instead of a gold one. Word.

With an instrumental that sounds like a vintage arcade game, an anthemic hook and Carti's overwhelming swagger, it's really no surprise "Magnolia" has taken off the way it has. Back in June, the track was featured in a Sprint commercial. That same month, JAY-Z  claimed "Magnolia" inspired part of 4:44.

Speaking with us for our 2017 XXL Freshman issue, Carti explained his goals for the rap game. "I want my impact to be legendary. I want everyone to remember me as just a mogul. A young dude that just lit forever," he explained.

He continued, "I feel like it’s important for me to expand, to create my own label. With a label, I can just give someone the opportunity that I was given, you know? That’s what it’s all about, just helping. It’s not even about me just helping someone out; they can help me out too. I’m looking for singers, songwriters, all that. It’s all about moving on to the next level.”
