One of R. Kelly’s Alleged Captives Denies Being Held Hostage
Yesterday (July 17), BuzzFeed News reported that parents of an aspiring singer accused R. Kelly of running an abusive sex cult with their daughter in it. Now, one of those women allegedly held captive by the R&B star has come forth to shoot down those accusations.
Speaking with TMZ today (July 18), Joycelyn Savage, whose parents allegedly contributed to BuzzFeed's explosive report on Kelly, claims that despite claims of emotional, sexual and physical abuse, she hasn't been brainwashed by the singer. She says everything is A-okay.
"I just mainly want to say that I am in a happy place with my life," she said in a video chat with the celebrity gossip site. "I’m not being brainwashed or anything like that. It just came to a point where it definitely has gotten out of hand. I just want everybody to know—my parents and everybody in the world—that I am totally fine. I’m happy where I’m at, and everything is okay with me."
Savage's response arrives a day after her parents had a press conference discussing Kelly's alleged sex cult and her role in it. Savage's parents say she's being held captive at Kelly's house in Atlanta. In her TMZ video, Savage doesn't mention her whereabouts and she doesn't really get into the details of anything regarding her living conditions. She does, however, reveal the reason she hasn't regularly communicated with her parents.
"I haven’t spoken to them in about five to six months, on and off," she says in the vid. "They’ll text me from time to time, but I haven’t really wanted to speak to them because of what they’re doing."
The claims of Savage's parents were corroborated by Cheryl Mack, Kitti Jones, and Asante McGee, who all lived in either Kelly's Duluth, Ga. or Chicago properties last summer.
For his part, Kelly had his reps shoot down all of the claims against him. “Mr. Robert Kelly is both alarmed and disturbed by the recent revelations attributed to him. Mr. Kelly unequivocally denies such accusations and will work diligently and forcibly to pursue his accusers and clear his name," the reps said yesterday.
