Tesla Interested in Getting Into the Music Streaming Business
Ever since the transition to digital music from physical copies, companies like Tidal, Spotify and Apple Music have been jockeying for the best streaming deals with artists and labels. Now a new company that no one expected might enter the foray—Tesla.
According to a report on Recode, co-founder and CEO of Tesla Elon Musk has been taking meetings with all the major labels to bundle a music streaming service to be included in the new Tesla models. According to Tech Crunch, Elon commented at a Tesla shareholder meeting that it’s “very hard to find good playlists or good matching algorithms.” This would explain his decision to create a whole new service instead of partnering with Spotify or Pandora.
Electrek reports that as of last August, Tesla claimed to received 400,000 reservations for the upcoming Model 3 as well as 25,000 reservations for the Model X. Labels and artists alike would be thrilled to be able to have their music easily accessible to these car owners, especially if they have all that free time, since Tesla cars will be self-driving eventually. It’ll make playing your favorite summer songs and albums that much easier.
Tesla would be shooting for the stars, competing with Spotify and Apple Music, who claim to have 50 million and 27 million subscribers, respectively. But they’ve made it a habit of shooting high, even aiming to colonize Mars.
