Kendrick Lamar’s ‘Section.80’ Project Certified Gold Six Years Later
Section.80's gold certification comes just a few months after Kendrick scored the first platinum song of his career. The Top Dawg Entertainment artist's hit single "Alright" was certified platinum in February.
According to Terrace Martin, one of Kendrick's go-to producers, K. Dot was actually already signed to Aftermath when he dropped Section.80. “Kendrick was signed to Interscope before they made it public, and he still dropped Section.80, and that was indie," Martin said in 2015. "He still dropped Section.80, but that was an independent project.”
K. Dot's new gold record adds to an already impressive collection, which includes two platinum LPs. Kendrick's good kid, m.A.A.d. city was certified platinum in 2013, while the critically acclaimed To Pimp a Butterfly received its platinum certification last year.
Kendrick likely won't be waiting long for another gold album considering the fervor around his album DAMN. The LP is projected to sell around 500,000 album equivalent units in its first week. If the projections are true, DAMN. will be Kendrick’s third consecutive album to debut at No. 1 on the Billboard Top 200 chart.
DAMN. is poised to do big numbers, and Kendrick plans to add to those figures with a vinyl release for the album. The "DNA" MC is selling 2LP copies through his official website. Each one will be autographed, but the vinyl will not begin shipping until July. Hopefully no fans will eat their copies like the unfortunate K. Dot fan who lost a bet to do just that.
Kendrick is also selling autographed copies of the DAMN. CD and t-shirts featuring the album's title on the front.
