Stormzy Inspires the Youth in “Cold” Video

Stormzy gives the phrase "iced out" a whole new meaning with his new video for "Cold." Released over the weekend (March 12), the grime star spits his agile bars while snow flurries fall around him. While he raps, little Black children play pretend by holding jobs of doctors, politicians and businessmen, a metaphor for Storm's uplifting lyrics.

"And tell them riot feds "oi, buss your gun? You won't dare (you won't dare bruv)/All my young black kings rise up, man, this is our year/And my young black queens right there/It's been a long time coming, I swear/If you don't turn this up, it's no fun/You ain't heard of us? You're so dumb," raps Stormzy in the second verse.

"Cold" is the latest promoted single off Stormzy's debut album Gang Signs & Prayer, which dropped last month on Feb. 24. When it dropped, The British artist’s debut album quickly shot to No. 1 on the U.K. charts, moving 69,000 units in the first week. So for rap fans are still skeptical of grime's growing global appeal, the 23-year-old artist is clearly proving otherwise.

“The Americans have their way of talking, their way of dressing, their way of doing things and we have ours,” Stormzy told XXL last year during a conversation about grime finally infiltrating the States. “That’s why this whole U.K. underground thing has become sick because everyone from the ends has finally said, ‘Hang on, what we’re doing is sick. Drake is sick but we’re sick as well.’ It’s not even a competitive thing; it’s literally just about confidence. And when you have that self-confidence and that belief, it just oozes onto people. The energy’s right.”
