Insiders Say Addiction and Anger Issues Are Contributing to Chris Brown’s “Downward Spiral”
An extensive report on Chris Brown's troubles in recent years characterizes him as a man dealing with severe drug addiction and anger issues. Billboard spoke to current and former associates of the singer to get a direct account of his troubles. The story paints a grim picture of Brown using cocaine, Xanax, molly and lean to self-medicate.
"He will cuss you out and say, ‘Hey, man, I’m functioning. I’m going to get the work out.’ And he does,” a current member of Brown’s team says. “But [he’s not] the first functional star who thinks they can handle those powerful drugs. I got to say with all my heart, he’s dancing with death.”
A former member of Brown's team said the singer is a drastically different person when he's sober. This source claims that much of Brown's abusive actions come from the drug use.
“Sober Chris is a solid guy with a big heart," the former close associate reveals. "High Chris and Chris coming off drugs is ungrateful, unappreciative and a foul person who most people don’t want to deal with. Good Chris? You’ll fight for him. Unfortunately, the last couple of years, it has been drug Chris. That Chris is not a good dude.”
The report states that Brown was diagnosed with bipolar II disorder in 2014. It also highlights some of the flippant attitudes towards Brown's struggles. The singer's longtime choreographer Flii Stylz admits that his friend is going through tough times, but speaks about how his talent supersedes any faults.
“He’s a natural. He is almost God’s perfect person,” Flii Stylz shares. “No matter how he fucks up and no matter what he does, another replacement for him is not on the way in the next decade.”
RCA Records, Brown's label, added their support to the story. In a statement to Billboard, the label says they continue to back their artist.
“We’re proud to be in business with Chris, a uniquely gifted artist who is always striving to be better," RCA Records says. "Through his ups and downs, we will continue to stand behind him.”
In music-related news, Brown is heading off on the Party Tour, where he'll bring 50 Cent, French Montana, Fabolous, O.T. Genasis and Kap G along for the ride.
