Smino Drops Soulful New Song “Anita”

Smino offers up a soulful ode to Black women around the world with "Anita," a smooth Monte Booker-produced track that could potentially be on his upcoming album.

The hook for the song compares Black women to chocolate ice cream and includes the phrase "Go diva," which seems to be a reference to the popular brand of chocolate. It's a laid-back track Smino claimed he created to help correct what he sees as an underrepresentation of Black women throughout history.

“I went to see Hidden Figures and it’s hella disappointing how there’s so many black women in history that aren’t written about so I wanted to make something to emphasize how raw a black woman is," Smino said in a press release. “With Trump in office, now is such an important time to be confident about blackness. We need some congregational-ass music that we can sing together.”

Last April, the Missouri rapper told XXL that he wanted to incorporate genres besides hip-hop in his music. "I say my sound is more is more futuristic funk, rap funk. If people or if I would compare my sound to any art that has came out before, I would say Dungeon Family-esque,” he said. “One of my goals is, I know its kind of silly, to get rid of payola, or just try to lead to make the radio different. I feel like we make music that could go mainstream but it’s doesn’t necessarily sound like mainstream.”

Smino's forthcoming album is set to drop in the near future, and if his project sounds anything like "Anita," it will definitely be dope.
