Desiigner may have been confused with Future for the beginning of his rap career, but since bursting onto the scene with "Panda" at the end of last year, the Brooklyn rapper has worked hard to create his own image. The 2016 XXL Freshman sat down to chat with his new boss, G.O.O.D. Music President Pusha T for Interview Magazine recently (Oct. 17) and went into immersive detail about where he believes he actually gets his sound from. When King Push asked the hyper hip-hop upstart where he draws inspiration from, Desiigner said he inherited the love of music form his blues-playing grandfather.

"If anything, I would consider my grandfather. He's a blues player," explained the New English rapper. "I like the old soul—you know how it is, Pusha, that old soul. My grandfather, he went by the name Sidney "Guitar Crusher" Selby; he formed that old soul, that old blues, that old rock that I put on my songs. He bluesed it out. And my pops, he was old-school, too; he played that old funk. I fell in love with that old style. You feel me?"

Since signing to G.O.O.D. Music in February, Desiigner's rambunctious talent has been put in good hands. Kanye West appeared in his first official music video, his 2016 XXL Freshman freestyle went viral and spawned crazy remixes and Mike Dean is set to executive produce Desiigner's debut album. Dean spoke of Desiigner's unorthodox talent earlier this year, telling Billboard, “he’s a lot more of an artist than you think he is. He’s not just some Future knockoff.”
