Vince Staples revealed that he felt undeserving of his deal during an appearance on The Breakfast Club to promote his new Prima Donna EP. Towards the end of the conversation, Charlamagne Tha God asked if being on Def Jam Records still meant anything in 2016. The always honest Staples took the opportunity to explain what Def Jam meant to him.

"To me, Def Jam means something because they helped take my momma out the set," Staples said around the 30:45 mark. "If they ain't do that, I might have a different approach. But it's somebody who gave me a record deal. Joie [Manda] and No I.D. gave me a record deal and I did not deserve it. They shouldn'ta gave me no money. They shouldn'ta gave me a good deal."

When asked why Vince Staples felt undeserving of the deal, the former XXL Freshman pointed to the quality of his music at the time. He also claimed his signing was a favor to his manager.

"My music wasn't there yet," Staples said. "It was trash. Not trash, but I think it was trash. My manager went to them and was like, 'I done known you for a long time. I gotta get this kid out of trouble cause he gonna be someone someday, just trust me.' And they said ok."

Vince Staples explained that he got a very good deal. This was part of the reason why he felt like he was undeserving of it.

"I feel like I don't deserve it. I don't have no bad deal," he continued. "I don't got no 360. I don't got not crazy situation with my masters or nothing like that. They coulda said, "Oh yeah, we'll give him a lil' tester teaser deal. We gon' give you a lil' bit of money. If you pop, we take everything. If not, we don't really lose nothing.' I got a decent like... I got a developmental contract like they used to get. I feel like that was the favor."
