Today, Aug. 4, is the birthday of Brooklyn rapper Bobby Shmurda. Bobby turns 24 today.

Though very green in the game, young Shmurda found early success in his rap career when his debut song "Hot Nigga" became a viral summer anthem in 2014. Complete with a guerilla style music video shot on the streets of Brooklyn and a goofy, easy-to-follow dance move to accompany it, "Hot Nigga" peaked at No. 6 on the Billboard 200 and earned Bobby and his GS9 crew members national fame. Bobby was soon signed to Epic Records off the certified platinum single.

Sadly for the Brooklyn upstart, his star fell just as fast as it rose. On Dec. 17, 2014, Bobby along with 14 other members of GS9 were arrested in a gang raid. Bobby was charged with conspiracy to commit murder and reckless endangerment as well as drug and gun possession. Bobby's bail was set for $2 million and is part of a length ongoing case. Here's a complete breakdown of Bobby Shmurda and the rest of GS9's towering list of charges.

Bobby now spends a second birthday behind bars as he awaits his fate while members of the hip-hop community like Meek Mill show their support. XXL caught up with Bobby and his mother back in May to get an emotional update on the case.

"They’re just doing this because I’m Bobby Shmurda and this is supposed to be a political case and all types of crazy shit. I want people to pay attention because I want them to say what evidence they have on me. I want them to put it out there because there’s no evidence whatsoever. They don’t have me conspiring to murder nobody, no guns, no fingerprints, none of my DNA is on the guns. This shit is crazy," said Bobby, professing his innocence.

"I’m feeling like I’m in limbo," said Leslie Pollard. "I just don’t know what’s going on and, sadly enough, I feel like my son is being mistreated. I feel like you have probable cause to lock them up, they’re innocent until proven guilty but I just wish that they would treat him like Ackquille Pollard [his government name]. I just feel like it’s a Bobby Shmurda cause, and that’s not fair. Then, I have only two sons and both of them are involved so it’s very strenuous."

In April 2017, it was revealed that Bobby got another extra four years on his sentence for having a shank while in the pen. In the spring of 2018, it was reported that Bobby could be eligible for parole as early as 2020. Posting to her Instagram account, Bobby's mother claimed that her son was maintaining a good spirit despite being behind bars.

"My baby said "BIG SHMURDA ON THE SET SHOW SOME RESPECT".....He is maintaining great spirits and will be home before you know it!!!!!" wrote Mama Shmurda in a caption for a picture of Bobby in jail clothes behind bars.

Happy Birthday, Shmurda! Rooting for you.
