Anderson .Paak is having one of the best years in hip-hop/R&B right now thanks to his excellent Malibu album, and now he sits down with DJ Whoo Kid to talk about making it through Dr. Dre's bootcamp, having the same influences as Kendrick Lamar and more.

.Paak is one of those rare artists who actually signed to Dre and is still around to speak about it. After breaking into the national consciousness on Compton, .Paak dropped Malibu, and in the interview above he talks about being surprised that Schoolboy Q hopped on a beat like "Am I Wrong." He also said Dre had to have been hot about getting cuffed in front of his crib the other week.

Another interesting part in Whoo Kid and Anderson's conversation is when Whoo Kid asks whether .Paak inspired Kendrick Lamar's funkier sound on To Pimp a Butterfly. "On his latest project, he worked a lot with people like Thundercat, people like Taz Arnold," says .Paak. "Taz and Thundercat came up under Sa-Ra, I came up under Sa-Ra. So did Ty Dolla Sign. [Sa-Ra] are our big homies, so if anything I think that's the influence or common thread we have."

The Cali singer also talks about text conversations he's had with Kendrick, bringing ideas to the table for Compton and much more. Watch the whole clip above.
