‘Star Trek: Beyond’ Predicts Hip-Hop Will Be Considered Classical Music in the Future

The newest Star Trek film opened in theaters this past Friday (July 22) and beyond generally positive reviews the film is as well making news for its cultural prediction. A new character, Jaylah, played by Sofia Boutella, is a hip-hop loving alien who listens to the Beastie Boys and Public Enemy. Dr. "Bones" McCoy, played by Karl Urban, refers to this as "classical music."

Star Trek: Beyond is the third film in the intergalactic franchise since it was rebooted in 2009. Each of the three films makes reference to the Beastie Boys in fact, with the first showing a young James T. Kirk driving his stepfather's car, listening to the group. In the second film, Into Darkness, an older Kirk is listening to a remix of "Body Movin'" and in the most recent release, "Sabotage" has certain plot implications, though to explain any further would be a spoiler.

The Beasties themselves have referenced Star Trek in their lyrics, such as on "Stop That Train," with the line "And you'll be pullin' a train like you're Captain Kirk" or on "Brouhaha" with "Communicator check one two, one two / This is Bones McCoy on a line to Sulu." And then there's "Intergalactic" which included "You'll knees'll start shaking and your fingers pop / Like a pinch on the neck from Mr. Spock."

Star Trek: Beyond is out now and stars Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana and Idriis Elba.
