Happy Birthday, Uncle Murda!

Today, July 25, is the birthday of Brooklyn's own Uncle Murda, who now turns 38. The East New York native has been rapping since the late 1990s, but it wasn't until 2007 that he got his chance to shine. With his self-released debut album, Say Uncle (2 Hard For Hip Hop Volume 01), Murda's music was introduced to fellow Brooklynite Jay Z in 2007 and HOV signed Murda to Roc-A-Fella Records for a short amount of time. Known as a mixtape king, Murda has eleven tapes to his name, the most recent of which is a collab project with Maino called Yellow Tape.

Maino and Murda have been making a conscious effort to make Brooklyn-based hip-hop safer for young rappers following the Irving Plaza shooting in May 2016. In June, Maino and Murda held a Brooklyn Unified forum in the heart of their borough to have an open discussion about rappers supporting one another.

“I just wanted dudes who’s coming up from Brooklyn and all New York, to understand not to bring the streets directly into the hip-hop business like that.” Murda told XXL after the panel. “Even though the content of the music is street, this is still a business at the end of the day and we got to conduct ourselves as such, as business men.”

Keeping his rhyme skills strong, Murda has continued dropping off new music, dropping a hilarious end of year rap up song ("Rap Up 2017") and, more recently, remixing Ella Mai's "Boo'd Up."
