Today, June 7, is the birthday of New Jersey rapper Fetty Wap, who now turns 27.

Born Willie Maxwell, the Paterson N.J. native with one eye took the hip-hop world by storm in 2015 with his monster hit "Trap Queen." The single dropped in late 2014 but rose to prominence, peaking at No. 2 on the US Billboard Hot 100 by May 2015. Proving he wasn't a one-hit wonder, Fetty followed up "Trap Queen" with the melodic "My Way" and the party anthem "679." Wap, whose stage name is partially derived from Gucci Mane, gained major co-signs in the industry from Nicki Minaj, Kanye West and Drake, who remixed "My Way." Fetty broke Billboard records when he became the first artist to have four singles in the top 10 of the Hot Rap Songs chart simultaneously. Wap also set another record, an accomplishment shared only with The Beatles, when his first three career singles (“Trap Queen,” “My Way” and “679”) landed on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.

Fetty's incredible run earned him a spot on the 2015 XXL Freshman Class alongside the likes of Vince Staples, OG Maco, Tink, Shy Glizzy, K Camp and DeJ Loaf. After touring in the summer, Fetty dropped his self-titled debut album in September of last year, which peaked at No. 1 on the Billboard charts and earned him not one but two Grammy nominations. When XXL caught up with the Zoo Gang leader in early 2016, he was hopeful about his future in the game (already preparing songs for his next album), and grateful for all his accomplishments thus far.

"Everything has changed, really. I don’t really know how to feel about that. Everything’s kind of moving faster. You know, people don’t think, “Oh Fetty Wap, a one-hit wonder” anymore, Fetty Wap a million. I’m just enjoying all the success. [But] I feel the same way, you know? It hasn’t changed me."

While Fetty hasn't put out an official LP since his 2015 debut, he's kept his fans well-fed. In June 2017, he unleashed his Lucky No. 7 mixtape. A few months later, in October 2017, the rapper unloaded his For My Fans 2 mixtape and once again reaffirmed his status as one of the more talented artists on the East Coast. Here's to getting much more new Fetty Wap music in 2018 and beyond.

Happy Birthday, Fetty Wap!
