VH1 Hip-Hop Honors Returns With a Focus on Women

It's been six years since VH1 last held its Hip-Hop Honors, but the ceremony is making its triumphant return this summer, and with an exclusive emphasis on females figures in the genre. In a press release announcing its return, VH1 has said that "the show will pay homage to the female pioneers, trailblazers and trend-setters who lead a movement and infiltrated the ranks of the male-dominated genre to make their voices heard and still do today."

The ceremony will air on Mon., July 11 at 9 p.m. EST live from New York City with honorees yet to be revealed, though Queen Latifah's Flavor Unit Entertainment will produce the show with special guests to be announced.

VH1 first started its Hip-Hop Honors in 2004 and in the years since has honored 2Pac, Run-DMC, Public Enemy, LL Cool J, Salt-N-Pepa, Snoop Dogg, Russell Simmons, Sugarhill Gang, MC Lyte and more. Missy Elliott, pictured above, was honored in 2007 at the 4th annual Hip-Hop Honors.

The inaugural show took place on Oct. 3, 2004 and aired on VH1 on Oct. 12. In addition to honoring KRS-One, Public Enemy, Run-DMC and more, it also recognized the art of graffiti and the movement that ushered it in. Vivica A. Fox served as host with presentations from celebrities such as Diddy, Tracy Morgan, Ice-T, Foxy Brown and Wyclef Jean.
