Rashid “Rasha” Derissant, one of the members of Bobby Shmurda’s GS9 crew, has been sentenced to 98 1/3 to life in prison. As XXL reported last month, Derissant and fellow GS9 member Alex “A-Rod” Crandon were convicted of murder, attempted murder and conspiracy. The two were found guilty of the February 2013 murder of a 19-year-old rival gang member. Bridget G. Brennan, New York City’s Special Narcotics Prosecutor, announced Derissant’s sentencing today (May 17).

“The sentence imposed today reflects the terror that the defendant’s crimes instilled in his own community, and wherever else he engaged in wanton violence to settle scores,” Brennan said in a press release. “It also underscored the value of the lives lost and tragically damaged.”

Derissant, 24, was convicted on 22 counts including conspiracy in the second and fourth degrees, murder in the second degree, attempted murder in the second degree, reckless endangerment in the first degree, assault in the first and second degrees, attempted assault in the first degree, criminal possession of a weapon in the second degree and criminal use of a firearm in the first degree.

Crandon, 22, who faced trial alongside Derrisant, had his sentencing postponed. Charges are currently pending against 19 other members and associates of the GS9 named in the same indictment as Derrisant and Crandon.

As for Bobby Shmurda’s legal troubles, the rapper’s case has still not gone to trial. The Brooklyn native’s trial was supposed to begin earlier this month, but Shmurda’s representation requested and was granted a postponement. Shmurda is now scheduled to appear in court on Sept. 12.
