Ghost Town DJ's "My Boo" has returned to the Billboard Hot 100 chart. 20 years after its debut, the single has re-entered the charts thanks to the Running Man Challenge meme.

The song's viral hit status can be traced back to videos created by Kevin Vincent and Jeremiah Hall, two high school students from New Jersey. These videos caught the attention of University of Maryland basketball players Jared Nickens and Jaylen Brantley, who created their own version and helped the meme spread.

Since the videos first blew up, people around the world have attempted to do their own "running man" with "My Boo" as the soundtrack. The meme has become so popular that "My Boo" is back on the charts with a dramatic increase in streaming and downloads. In the week ending in May 5, "My Boo" received 35,000 downloads in the United States according to Nielsen Music. The song received 12.3 million streams in the U.S. during this same week with 80 percent of them coming from YouTube.

"My Boo" returns to the Hot 100 chart at No. 29, which tops its previous peak of No. 31. The Ghost Town DJ's single reached that spot back on the Oct. 12, 1996 chart. The song also landed at No. 14 on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart. This topped its previous peak of No. 18 back on the Aug. 24, 1996 chart.

The unlikely comeback of "My Boo" and the Ghost Town DJ's is sure to make other artists want to find a way to make their old songs into viral hits. While memes have become a major outlet for new artists to make a name for themselves, it now appears that older work is fully capable of gaining a new life in the right hands.
