With the rise of countless streaming services and high-profile album exclusives, there's no denying that way music is obtained and consumed has changed drastically in the past few years. Not so drastically though that Apple is doing away with music downloads, as Digital Music News originally reported on Wednesday (May 11). The website reported that according to sources close to the company, Apple was planning to terminate its downloading service within a projected two to four-year timeline.

But the technology innovator came out almost immediately, refuting the report, with BuzzFeed's John Paczkowski writing on Twitter Wednesday night, "Apple spokesperson tells me on record that this is NOT true."

“This is not true,” Apple spokesperson Tom Neumayr told BuzzFeed News. Music downloads still outsell Apple Music subscriptions three to one, with Drake's Views going platinum in a single week while an Apple exclusive. All of this serves to refute the original DMN story which noted that an Apple executive had said that “keeping [iTunes music downloads] running forever isn’t really on the table anymore.”  The report later qotes music industry analyst Mark Mulligan at Canadian Music Week ass saying, “Last year downloads declined by 16% in nominal terms. This year they are tracking to decline by between 25% and 30%.”

While streaming seems to be the new frontier in music consumption, there will always be a lane for old school methods and those who prefer to own music files as opposed to stream them. Read the full story over at BuzzFeed.
