Hip-hop's contemporaries are making sure Phife Dawg's legacy will not soon be forgotten. Even though the Five Foot Assassin passed away last month, rappers are still vocally mourning the Queens MC. Jay Electronica is the latest rapper to memorialize Phife through music, dropping a dope "R.I.P Phife" themed freestyle during a recent set. Filmed during a Minneapolis, MN show over the weekend (April 10), Jay was accompanied onstage by local Twin Cities rapper Meta Sota as the two took turns spitting in Phife Dawg's honor.

Starting off with the classic ATCQ call and response, "Can I kick it? Yes you can!" Jay rallied the crowd to get into the Tribe vibe before delivering his bars:

"I'm from the land of the smoking gun and smoking dices/On the run with the Christ from the poltergeist's/Thuggin life, chase death like the ambulance/Candyman, USB flip, can't hang me, man/You'll never cop me slipping on the grassy knoll/At the bottom of the well screaming, "Lassie, go!"/I never spit nothing less than astronomical."

Phife Dawg passed away back on March 22 at age 45 from complications resulting from diabetes. Since his death, the hip-hop community has come out in full force to remember the Tribe Called Quest member with high esteem. Pittsburgh rapper Mac Miller dropped a special Phife Dawg memorial remix on Soundcloud, Kendrick Lamar, Chuck D and Andre 3000 paid tribute to Phife on Q-Tip's weekly radio show and even basketball player Kobe Bryant shared kind words about the St. Albans MC, calling him a "legend."

Fans of Phife Diggy have started a petition to rename a local street in Queens after him and for fans who still aren't ready to let go just yet, J Dilla's camp has released the Phife Dawg collab "Nutshell." Check out Jay Elec and Met Sota's new freestyle above.
