Gunplay was facing a life sentence a few years ago on armed robbery charges. When discussing the situation on an episode of N.O.R.E. and DJ EFN's Drink Champs podcast, the rapper said voodoo helped him beat the case.

"I said I got this case I'm going through and I don't know what to do for real," Gunplay said. "I'm chasing a n---a, I can't whack a n---a. The n---a gone. You know what I'm saying? What can I do? The n---a called nine on a n---a, whatchu want me to do. What can I do? I say look, what's up with this Santeria thing?"

Santeria is a syncretistic religion of Caribbean origin. It combines the worship of Orisha and other beliefs of the Ifa religion with elements taken from Catholicism. When Gunplay brought it up, N.O.R.E. tried to put a halt to the discussion. The veteran rapper thought people might get scared and steered the conversation to the infamous video of Gunplay doing cocaine in Columbia. That did not deter Gunplay from getting back to the Santeria talk.

"The spiritual world is real," he said. "I cut fucking chickens and goats n---a and that's how I beat the case if you really wanna know."

You can check out the full clip above as Gunplay also described how the possibility of a life sentence inspired his standout record "Bible on the Dash." If you want to hear the entire episode of Drink Champs with guests Gunplay and Capone, head over to the podcast's official site.
