Kendrick Lamar pretty much put the music world on pause when he unleashed his unexpected project, untitled unmasteredWhispers of the release first began to circulate yesterday, March 3. Earlier this week, Top Dawg Entertainment CEO Anthony Tiffith announced that a new release from TDE would be coming in the next few days. Many speculated that it would come from ScHoolboy Q but no one thought Kendrick.

K. Dot previously spoke on the material released at midnight, even performing untitled tracks on the final episode of The Colbert ReportThe Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon and at the Grammys. "You see all these performances on these late night shows, I got a chamber of material from the project that I was in love with where sample clearances or something as simple as a deadline kept it off the album,” the TDE rapper told 2DopeBoyz. “But I think probably close to ten songs that I’m in love with that I’ll still play and still perform that didn’t make the cut.”

Cleveland Cavaliers star LeBron James was also influential in getting the material released, after he pleaded with Tiffith to release the songs after hearing them previously. "Yea muthafuckas KING KENDRICK returns 2nite.. Thank @kingjames for this.... #TDE," captioned the TDE CEO on Instagram making everyone aware that James played a big part.
