Phife Dawg Had Plans to Release Two Projects This Year

The hip-hop world is reeling in the wake of Phife Dawg's death. The A Tribe Called Quest MC's passing was announced late last night (March 22) and in the tumult of emotions surrounding the news, it's worth remembering that Phife was about to hit us with new music.

In a Nov. 2015 interview with Rolling Stone, Phife revealed that he was working on a new EP called Give Thanks that featured production from 9th Wonder and Nottz. Along with the EP, Phife had plans for a new LP called Muttymorphosis, which would serve as "basically [Phife's] life story." Both projects were scheduled to drop in 2016.

The ATCQ rapper spoke on his health and said that his Give Thanks EP referred to his battle with diabetes that eventually took his life.

"That's exactly why I named [the EP Give Thanks]. Because at the end of the day, I have a lot to be thankful for and it could be really worse," he said. "And that is another reason why it is ludicrous for [A Tribe Called Quest] not to be performing right now and smelling these roses why we're still here. It's just ridiculous, but you got to move on."

Phife's family released a statement earlier today (March 23):

“We regret to share the news that on Tuesday March 22nd, 2016, Malik has passed away due to complications resulting from diabetes.Malik was our loving husband, father, brother and friend. We love him dearly. How he impacted all our lives will never be forgotten. His love for music and sports was only surpassed by his love of God and family."

Dion Liverpool, his manager adds, "While I mourn the loss of my best friend and brother, I also will celebrate his incredible life and contribution to many people’s ears across the world. Even with all his success, I have never met a person as humble as he. He taught me that maintaining a positive attitude and outlook can conquer anything. Now my brother is resting in greatness. I’m honored to have crossed paths with him. Riddim Kidz 4eva.”

The rapper's family asks for privacy during this difficult time.
