Kendrick Lamar came out of nowhere and surprised the world with a new project last night (March 3). The eight-track release, put out through Aftermath/Interscope/Top Dawg Entertainment, is called untitled unmastered and serves as the follow-up to last year's critically acclaimed To Pimp a Butterfly. News of the project first emerged Thursday and the project dropped a few hours later.
In a recent interview, Kendrick gave details on the unreleased material he used in live performances, which ended up being on this project. “You see all these performances on these late night shows, I got a chamber of material from the project that I was in love where sample clearances or something as simple as a deadline kept it off the album,” he said. “But I think probably close to 10 songs that I’m in love with that I’ll still play and still perform that didn’t make the cut.”
The songs on the album were previously performed on the final episode of The Colbert Report, The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon and at this year's Grammys ceremony.
All praise should be handed to NBA star LeBron James, who pleaded with Top Dawg Entertainment CEO Anthony Tiffith to get Kendrick to release new music. The new project is stacked, featuring guest appearances from SZA, Jay Rock, Terrace Martin, Bilal, Thundercat, Anna Wise, CeeLo Green and TDE's President Punch. Production is handled by Cardo, Hit-Boy, Astronote,Bizness Boi, Nard&B, Frank Dukes, Yung Exclusive, Swizz Beatz and Swizz's 5-year-old song Egypt Dean.
