Netflix has debuted a trailer for a new hip-hop inspired series called The Get Down. The show was created by Baz Lurhmann, who will be making be making his television debut.

Lurhmann is known for directing such films as Strictly Ballroom, Moulin Rouge! and the 2013 version of The Great Gasby. Lurhmann will direct the first two episodes as well as the finale. Emmy nominee Shawn Ryan, known for his work on The Shield and Terriers, will serve as an executive producer.

Hip-hop pioneer Grandmaster Flash also serves as an associate producer and advisor. Flash's involvement is sure to raise hopes that an authentic representation of the time will be shown. Shameik Moore, Jimmy Smits, Giancarlo Esposito and Jaden Smith are among the notable names who will star in The Get Down.

Netflix had the following to say about the series. "Told through the lives and music of a ragtag crew of South Bronx teens, The Get Down is a mythic saga of the transformation of 1970s New York City."

The trailer is visually impressive and sure to add to the interest in this series. Netflix's venture into original programming has delivered plenty of critically acclaimed series, so expectations will be high for a show like this. Viewers will have to wait and see if it can live up to the hype. No release date has been announced for The Get Down.
