10 of the Best Kanye West G.O.O.D. Friday Songs
Whenever Kanye West decides to release new music, the occasion is akin to Christmas for rap fans. And while his big brother may be the true God MC of the new millennium, when you add it all up, Kanye is arguably the begotten son.
Today (Jan. 8), West unleashed two new tracks, "Real Friends" featuring Ty Dolla $ign as well as a snippet of a Kendrick Lamar-assisted song, "No More Parties in L.A.," proving that G.O.O.D. Fridays was upon us again (Kim Kardashian hinted at the return earlier this morning). The songs could very likely appear on Yeezy's overdue Swish album. Safe to say, the rap community immediately went bonkers, tripping over themselves to catch a working link to hear if "Trap Kanye" was going to appear or if we'd get a taste of corduroy sweater and backpack Yeezy.
What fans got was the Kanye many said they had been missing for so long. You know, the guy that turned the rap world on its ear with a little series dubbed G.O.O.D. Fridays. In 2010, Kanye West was a broken man. After upstaging middle America's pristine media darling during her shining moment at the MTV VMAs in 2009 his career nearly took a turn similar to the one his Mercedes Benz did on that fateful night he crashed in 2002. The backlash was heavy and widespread. For the first time in his life, Kanye actually doubted Kanye.
But then he secluded himself in Hawaii, rounded up a dream team of elite rappers and producers, and crafted what is considered his magnum opus, My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy. Leading up to the release of the album, Kanye decided to build some good will between himself and the fans (or just annihilate the competition, whatever you prefer) and started leaking some of the most amazing music fans had heard in quite some time every Friday, thus birthing the legend that is now known as G.O.O.D. Fridays.
When it comes to taking this game of rhymes and riddles we call hip-hop and making what has become mundane into major cultural events, Mr. West is in a class of his own. So, instead of just rolling out Swish like we all had pleaded, he decided to throw us a bone and revive G.O.O.D. Fridays, once again proving to never doubt Kanye West.
In celebration of the return, XXL takes a look back at the best tracks in the short, but illustrious history of G.O.O.D. Fridays. Did your favorite make the cut? Here are 10 Best Kanye West G.O.O.D. Friday Songs.
